Disturbing But Worth Watching

The Columbine Massacre: In the Killer's Mind (2007)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This French documentary from filmmaker Stéphanie Kaim was obviously made on a low-budget but it's extremely well-made and as the title says it tries to get into the minds of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Through video footage shot by the killers to home movies and security footage, this documentary gives you a pretty gruesome idea of what happened that day and the events leading up to it.

Unlike most American documentaries on the subject, it should be noted that this here is pretty graphic as there are uncensored photos of the massacre shown so those wanting to avoid seeing real carnage should probably stay away from this or at least be prepared to cover your eyes. I think the documentary did a very good job at covering all sides of the story including early on talking about how Klebold and Harris were abused and picked on by most people in the school. We even get video footage of the two being hit by a few jocks.

From here we learn about their growing rage and through readings of their diaries we hear their hatred grow deeper and deeper. There's also footage from home movies that the two made where they fantasize about their killings and we also get interviews with a few people who knew them as well as people who were in the school that day when the massacre started.

The documentary lasts under a hour but there's a lot of great, sad and rather shocking information here including some issues that locals had with the police and how long it took them to respond to what was going on. There's also plenty of footage that really gives you a terrific idea of what was going on with these guys that made them snap. To say what they wrote was chilling would be an understatement. The film isn't very easy to watch and it's quite disturbing but if you're interested in the story then there's a lot of stuff here.

Horrible narration
jeffyoung-3769225 November 2020
If you are going to do a documentary on one of the worst school shootings in history, you could at least pronounce the names of those involved properly.

No original material was used and no real attempt was made to tell the story in a new way for the survivors. I learned nothing new about what happened that day. The narration, editing, and jumbled clips were absolutely horrible. It's a sad attempt to capitalize on one of the worst moments IN US history. Shame on everyone involved in this so-called documentary as it was a clear attempt to make a few quick dollars off of the lives of those who attended Columbine on that fateful day. Save yourself the pain of sitting through this joke of a documentary and read a book on it, you'll learn far more.

I found this to be horribly edited! You call him her and her him? You really do not even pronounce simple words correct?

I could have made this on my Ipad way better!

It would be a good documentary without all the obvious mistakes!

Really ? They pronounce the kkk name wrong?

Warning: Spoilers
The narrator for this outstanding documentary about Eric and Dylan was absolutely brilliant. All the people who remember the two young teens who took those 13 innocent people never forget the horrors and changes in there eyes .

Poorly put together
teagueshannon18 April 2021
This seemed to be put together by high schoolers. It mocks their virginity and their social status rather than looking into their mental status. I felt like I was watching a High School drama rather than an informative documentary of an American Tragedy.

Quotes like they were really uncool and died virgins. Or something like they were uncool. Not just for seniors but for the whole school. They were the losers of the losers.

If you're watching this documentary to glean useful information or trying to understand this tragedy, this isn't the one for you.

Waste of time

I don't know if maybe this was made for a high school project or what, but even if that were the case it is a complete failure. Horrible narration, horrible editing, and whoever put this together obviously didn't do much, if any, research. If you want to watch a documentary on the Columbine massacre, look elsewhere. This one is a complete waste of time and there are many other documentaries on the subject that are miles better.

Five Minutes and STOPPED WATCHING
lbakos16 November 2022
To read other reviews. I was wondering if it was driving me as crazy as other people to hear the horrible narration. It sounded like a computer voice that could not speak English properly. It was a french film, I get that, but if you were going to hire someone to narrate it in English, get someone who can correct the vocabulary and grammar. Sound was horrendous. Not much substance even at only 5 minutes in.

As others have noted, it looked like a poor attempt at a high school project where the kids forgot that it was due tomorrow. "Oh crap, you type the script and I'll look up all the pictures I can of the massacre! We will just do like a movie version of Powerpoint!" Nevermind, there is no way the producers and such gave it that much thought.

Grammar Nightmare

Warning: Spoilers
The mispronunciation of so many words and names and tenses had me turning it off at the 10 minute mark. Substandard writing and research. High hopes dashed quickly.

I'm shocked anybody enjoyed this
gregmj-227267 July 2022
I'll sum up my one star rating with one paraphrased quote from the narrator: "Eric Harris entered college in 1993 where he met Dylan Klebold"....sooo they met in college in 1993 but 6 yrs later were demoted back to high school? Absolute joke whoever wrote the script for this. Besides the fact that they mispronounce Dylan Klebolds name every single time its mentioned, refer to him going to "junior school" which I assume is meant to be Junior High, it's just a sad attempt at a documentary.

At less than a minute and a half in...
malmsteen-534223 March 2022
Truly I gave up at about 2 minutes in. The first outright lie is the claim of using machine guns and sawed-off shotguns. While yes a singular sawed-off shot gun was use, there were not multiples. There were zero machine guns used. At about a minute and twenty seconds in, they claim Columbine was "at the time, the worst school massacre in the history of the United States." It is a well known fact the worst school massacre happened in Bath Township, Michigan in 1927. Truly not worth continuing into this "documentary" which is already a fiction.

Do Not Watch This.
xkbmspwq28 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't watch this. Not because it's disturbing. Not because it's a horrible subject. Don't watch this because it's a absolute horsesh-t. After the massacre in 1999, we were all lied to. There's no conspiracy or anything like that, but the narrative saying Harris and Klebold were outcasts and were constantly picked on by other students was a lie. Eric was a popular student. He was even in a relationship with a woman five years his senior. Eric Harris was a true psychopath- someone who truly wanted to cause harm to as many people as he could. If he didn't shoot you his school, we would still know who Eric Harris is, but for different reasons. Dylan Klebold was his little follower. A depressed high schooler who just needed someone to follow. Unfortunately, Dylan picked a monster.

There's even a grammar mistake on the TITLE
polyananielsen4 February 2022
There are TWO KILLERS. Therefore it should have been ''THE KILLERS' MIND''. I expected to see new material. Nothing new was added to what is already out in the media. I have read so much about this shooting over the years. This film brings nothing new to the table. I really think that the person should take an EFL course before attempting to narrate movies. This was really terrible!
