I guess the idea here is to "subvert expectations": At first, the viewer might think he is watching a period piece, when in reality the story narrated here takes place during present times, and the men walking on the desert are not Spanish conquerors, but a crew of thespians. (A "mirage" metaphor?)
Near the end of the short, there is a small dedication towards those who "survive" working on theater arts. Which is fine, but I think the idea could have been furtherly explored, dealing also with the illusory nature of cinema.
An okay watch anyway.
