When a scientist at the research centre on Fair Isle is found murdered DI Perez and DS 'Tosh' McIntosh fly down from the mainland to investigate. Suspects soon start to emerge; firstly the researcher who had been working with her is nowhere to be found and when he does eventually turn up his story about looking for Icterine Warblers sounds a bit unlikely as he was without his bird watching gear; then there is another researcher who is caught in the process of destroying a camera memory card and finally there is the dead woman's husband who clearly suspects she was involved with the first suspect. With a storm moving in over Mainland there are no more flights in or out so Perez and Tosh are on their own and the seventy islanders are nervous knowing there is a murderer in their midst.
This was a good conclusion to the second series; finally giving the viewer a view of the Island Perez came from. I had worried that there would just be a few establishing shots of the island but it turned out most of the outdoor shots appeared to have been filmed on Fair Isle a stunning location. The mystery was interesting and the fact that nobody could leave the island kept the tension high as everybody wondered who the killer amongst them was. It was also a nice relief when the killer's motive was shown to be the usual human weaknesses not mad bird watchers fighting over a fictitious bird as happened in an episode of 'Midsomer Murders'! There were a few chuckles to be had such as Tosh opting to take the Ferry back to the Mainland as the flight down was a bit rough; anybody who knows Fair Isle will know of the ferry's reputation!
