Giving it Time

This show has a great opportunity, given the delays resulting from the SAG and writers strikes, but something is just off at this point. First, why do we need an NCIS in Sydney? It's not a political hotspot, the 80's era fascination with all things Australia are behind us, and within the script a case was never made very strongly.

The cast is mostly very good and the locations are beautiful to look at, but the writing is uneven at best. For example, Mavournee Hazel Is a talented actress but her lines are terrible and the social anxiety afflicting her character is so poorly constructed that it's eye rolling far more often than it's convincing. Olivia Swann needed better direction from the get go, but seems to be settling into her role without trying to be the female Steve McGarrett ("I always drive the car, even in foreign countries I'm not licensed in!'). As she's allowed to utilize her charm and competence I suspect her character will work better.

I'm giving it another episode or two to get better, but currently I don't see any shame in punching out. Why are we doing NCIS in Sydney again???

"Brothers in Arms"

Warning: Spoilers
A shark episode hot on the heels of one about killer snakes? Ahh, yes, I should have expected this.

"Brothers in Arms" - pardon the pun - starts when an arm washes up at the Malabar Ocean Pool and ends up leaving more questions than answers where our favourite DOD Colonel Rankin is concerned.

Cool to see Conrad Coleby playing an Australian Navy officer. He has plenty of experience of doing that from his 'Sea Patrol' days as 'Dutchy' Mulholland. Now THERE was a Navy show.

Mavournee Hazel is still annoying. I know she is meant to suffer from some sort of anxiety but her portrayal is like nails down a chalkboard. Let's hope that a promotion to proper NCIS: Sydney member ends that particular storyline because it - and she - is aggravating.

Sydney locations: Malabar Ocean Pool and Neutral Bay. Also mentioned, Maroubra.

Episode 3

Warning: Spoilers
We're already three episode sin and it is starting to get a little too formulaic and predictable, but what can you do? It is a CBS procedural and that is to be expected.

I feel like we needed this with the writer's strike delaying the other NCIS shows, but this has the potential to be something a little different and fresh and we are not quite getting that.

The pacing of this episode just felt off to me. It seemed like things were going to be wrapped up quite quickly and then I looked at the clock and we saw that we had awhile to go. I don't know, I just hope the show doesn't start to bore me.
