We don't talk enough about the healing powers of humor. The old saying, "laughter is the best medicine," as cliché as it may be, actually has a lot of truth to it. I learned about the power of laughter at a relatively young age.

Growing up in Omaha, Amber Ruffin didn’t have many role models who looked like her. “I had not seen Black female performances that weren’t a stereotype and honestly, it was a while until it became regular.” Luckily, there were two movies on regular rotation in her home: “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “The Wiz.”
The first started Oscar-winner Whoopi Goldberg, in whose hyphenate shoes Ruffin would follow, becoming an actor, host, writer and comedian. And the latter was the big-screen adaptation of the revolutionary 1974 Broadway musical, a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” with an all-Black cast and bumping tunes that blended rock, gospel and soul. Says Ruffin of the films, “They were just so specific and weird that it was like an invitation to be yourself. So I had to squeeze all of the belonging out of those two movies and they lasted me well beyond childhood.”

The 41st annual PaleyFest LA celebrated the 10-year anniversary of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Monday, April 15 at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. A panel discussion moderated by Andy Samberg honored the accomplishments of his longtime friend Seth Meyers. Watch Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford interview both of them above or read the full transcript below.
See John Larroquette (‘Night Court’) on being an Emmy legend with 4 consecutive wins before dropping out of the race
Latasha Ford:
So first and foremost, congratulations on making it to the 10 year mark.
Seth Meyers:
Thank you.
Latasha Ford:
What does this moment feel like for you? I’ll definitely start with you, Seth.
Seth Meyers:
I will only say that it feels like any other show week. You just do the show and then the great thing about doing a show for 10 years is you get to start on your 11th year.

When A Romantic Beach Getaway Turned Almost Fatal For Chris Pratt – Here’s What Happened Next! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sometimes, romantic escapades turn into a dreadful experience and stay engraved in people’s minds. Many of you would agree with this. At least the Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt would! The actor once had a near-fatal incident on a romantic break, and that was years even before his relationship with Anna Faris. During the promotion of his film The Magnificent Seven, the actor shared this frightful incident several years ago.
Chris gained recognition and fame as Andy Dwyer in the Parks and Recreation series, and after appearing in several movies as a supporting actor, his breakthrough came after playing Star-Lord in the MCU and as Owen Grady in the Jurassic World films. Pratt has also lent his voice in several animated movies and for the lead character. Some...

Greg Gutfeld isn’t your typical Fox News personality. But he is turning in to something that is more traditional at the Fox Corp.-backed cable outlet.
Fox News is expected to announce that it recently closed a deal with Gutfeld to extend his contract, a move that spotlights the host’s importance to the network’s operations even if he isn’t in the mold of a Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham. Under the pact, Gutfeld will continue his co-hosting duties at the roundtable show “The Five” as well as his 10 p.m. program, “Gutfeld!,” a looser take on the issues of the day that marks a bid by Fox News to woo the younger TV viewers who might watch late-night programs such as “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS or “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. The third anniversary of the 10 p.m. program arrives Friday.

Saturday Night Live alum Seth Meyers is setting the record straight about rumors speculating who creator Lorne Michaels will pass the torch to as the show approaches its 50th anniversary. During a recent appearance on Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out podcast, the Late Night With Seth Meyers host pushed back on the suggestion that he might take up the helm — or that Michaels even has any true intention of giving it up.

Comedian and actor Tiffany Haddish had a wake-up call in a big way following a DUI arrest in 2023. This was the catalyst that helped her put the bottle down. So, how did she finally do it?
Tiffany Haddish Arrested For DUI In 2023
Tiffany Haddish’s most recent arrest occurred on November 24, 2023. The comedian allegedly fell asleep at the wheel while driving her Tesla. This incident happened in the early morning hours. She was charged with a DUI, but, the charge was reduced to a violation.
Tiffany Haddish then pleaded no contest later in February. Haddish said that she was “driving exhausted.” She had also attended a Thanksgiving event the evening before in West Hollywood. Haddish was previously arrested on suspicion of DUI in Georgia in 2022. So, she certainly has a history of this, and it was becoming a pattern.

Digital ad measurement firm Double Verify and broadcaster NBC Universal have announced an expanded partnership that will see the latter tap into new measurement tools for advertisers across streaming platforms.
The collaboration announced this week will allow advertisers to track brand safety, ad suitability, and campaign performance for specific programs across devices like connected TVs (CTVs).
Promoted as a first-of-its-kind partnership, the pact aims to give marketers more transparent insight that the companies hope will lead to greater confidence in their streaming-based ad campaigns.
“Today marks a key shift in streaming measurement and authentication,” said Mark Zagorski, the CEO of Double Verify. “We’re excited to collaborate with NBC Universal to introduce this revolutionary capability, boosting advertiser confidence and delivering unmatched transparency at the program level.

Margaret Qualley has been to some interesting venues to promote her new film, Drive-Away Dolls.
The actress stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers where she discussed the project from Ethan Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke. While chatting with Meyers, Qualley explained that its press tour took her to a vibrator museum in San Francisco.
“It was memorable,” she told the late night host. “You know, I wanted more time there, but I left thinking, like, ‘I don’t know that anyone should put that inside of them.’ Like, those ancient vibrators… It seemed dangerous.”
She and Meyers went on to joke about how the scientists who worked on the technological improvements of more recent vibrators were the “real heroes,” who should have TV shows made about them, instead of those made about people at NASA.
Elsewhere in the appearance, Qualley noted that the film was originally titled Drive-Away Dykes...

“Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer was among 30 protesters taken into police custody for participating in a Pro-Palestine rally outside of President Joe Biden’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers” appearance in New York City on Monday.
When contacted about Schafer’s involvement, a NYPD spokesperson told Variety that “a total of 30 individuals were taken into custody” after a “demonstration at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.” Those 30 people were also issued summonses for trespass.
The 25-year-old actor was protesting with the organization Jewish Voice for Peace. Schafer was photographed wearing a “ceasefire now” shirt as she was escorted away by NYPD, referencing the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
Representatives for Schafer did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
In an Instagram post featuring Schafer, Jewish Voice for Peace stated the mission of the protest on Monday. “Biden’s deadly foreign policy has funded and fueled genocide in Gaza. 50 protesters were arrested by the NYPD and Secret Service,...

President Joe Biden said a potential 2024 endorsement by pop superstar Taylor Swift is “classified information” during a joke-filled 10-year reunion appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Monday night.
“I will tell you, she did endorse me in 2020,” a grinning Biden added about Swift, amid widespread conspiracy theories that the singer and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, are part of a dark plot to help reelect the U.S. president later this year.
Biden, who made a rare media appearance on the late night talker, also addressed widespread concerns about his age when told by Meyers that he was 81 years old.
“Who the hell told you that? That classified,” the president quipped. Joking aside, Biden added: “You got to take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name.” That was...

There was something perhaps apt about Joe Biden’s appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” Monday night being pegged to the show’s 10th anniversary; as Vice President, in 2014, Biden had appeared on the show’s first broadcast, and now he marked the passage of a decade. It was a booking that made sense, but that also called attention to Biden’s most crucial liability in 2024 — the fact that time has passed.
Questions about Biden’s age and acuity have intensified in recent months, even as — as the man himself pointed out on Meyers’ couch — his likely opponent in the November election, Donald Trump, is of comparable age. Appearing for an interview with Meyers after a presidency defined, especially in recent months, by a press-shy approach, Biden was stronger on questions of politics than on television entertainment.

Update: In his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Joe Biden quipped about his age, but the host pressed him on it.
“All jokes aside, according to recent polling, this is a real concern for American voters,” Meyers noted.

Biden was referring to Donald Trump’s reference to wife Melania as “Mercedes” in a recent speech.

When Seth Meyers inaugurated his version of Late Night in 2014, the guests on his first show were Amy Poehler and then Vice President Joe Biden.
Meyers will celebrate 10 years of as host of Late Night on Monday, when his guests will be … Amy Poehler and Joe Biden. NBC confirmed Monday afternoon that the president would make a “surprise appearance” on the show (as first reported by the New York Post).
“The more comfortable you are, the better the show is. On camera, I’m most comfortable with Amy,” Meyers told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the anniversary show (Late Night With Seth Meyers premiered on Feb. 24, 2014). “The longer I do the show, I feel like I can have that comfort I’ve had with her with everybody else. You just start trusting your ability to be your natural self on camera. I think she’s gone from a crutch [for me] to just a good guest.

Today, Dakota Johnson is one of the most popular superstars in Hollywood. Despite having a father who was an actor, Johnson got no support and initially had to struggle to make ends meet. The actress once explained that her father, actor Don Johnson, stopped giving her allowance when she told him she wanted to become an actor.

There’s no doubt that filming the series finale of The Office was an emotional experience for many. This cast and crew, many of whom had worked for almost 10 years together, knew they had only days left before this thing that they had dedicated so much of their lives to was over. However, according to Dakota Johnson, who appears briefly in the series finale as Kevin’s replacement, the vibes were a little weirder than we may have realized.

Dakota Johnson recently took a stroll down memory lane, all the way back to her appearance on the series finale of The Office in May 2013.
While on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday night, the Madame Web actress explained how she was thrilled to guest-star on the popular NBC show because she was a huge fan, but it didn’t necessarily go as planned.
“That was honestly the worst time of my life,” Johnson joked about the experience. “They were like, ‘Do you want to be in the series finale?’ And I was like, ‘Of course,’ thinking that I’d show up for like half a day. And I was there for two weeks, and I’m barely in the fucking show.”

Dakota Johnson has no desire to revisit her time on “The Office.”
The “Madame Web” actress appeared in the series finale of the beloved NBC sitcom series, but called it the “worst time” of her professional acting experience during an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
“That was honestly the worst time of my life,” Johnson said. “I love that show so much, and they were like, ‘Do you want to be in the series finale?’ and I was like, ‘Of course,’ thinking that I’d show up for, like, half a day. I was there for two weeks, and I’m barely in the fucking show.”
Johnson appears in the background as a new Dunder Mifflin employee; she only speaks in two scenes.

Molly Ringwald stars in Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans as Joanne Carson, who became one of Truman Capote’s closest friends after her divorce from Johnny Carson. Now that Ringwald has completed the FX limited series, and after previously collaborating with Murphy on Netflix’s Dahmer, she’s already thinking about what type of role she’d like to take on if she works with the prolific showrunner again.
During Ringwald’s interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Tuesday, the host pointed out that the Sixteen Candles alum plays a “kind person” in Feud, as she did in Dahmer. “I think nobody has ever had a two-Ryan-Murphy-show streak of playing a nice person,” Meyers said. He then asked, “Do you have a dream if you collaborated with him again of what you would be cast as?”
“Yes,” Ringwald responded. “I would like to play a psycho bitch.

Larry David’s viral attack on Elmo became the focal point of his visit later in the day to “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” where the host grilled David on answers for what would make a person want to attack the beloved “Sesame Street” character on live television. Both David and Elmo were guests on the Feb 1. edition of NBC’s “Today” when David crashed the morning show set during Elmo’s interview and throttled his face.
“The clip is going around online, Larry. You can’t hide from this,” Meyers told David. “Elmo, some might say, is loved by all.”
“Yeah, yeah. I did it,” David said when asked for an explanation. He then impersonated Elmo’s high-pitched voice and continued: “Elmo was talking. I was waiting to be interviewed, and Elmo was going on about mental health and I had to listen to every word. And I was going,...

Jenny Hagel is “obsessed” with giving people advice – whether people ask or not. “I’m sure it’s everybody’s least favorite thing about me, but I can’t stop,” she admits. “It’s like a facial tic, except in my personality.”
While this could be annoying in the hands of a lesser talent, Hagel happens to be a gifted comedian and writer with a talent for showmanship. Case in point, her Emmy-nominated work as a a writer and performer on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” where she is perhaps best known for a recurring segment called “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” with her frequent collaborator Amber Ruffin. Because Ruffin is Black and Hagel is gay, they appear every so often to recite punchlines that are off-limits to the host. Though British actor Tom Hollander said he doesn’t get mistaken for Tom Holland visually, over email, he definitely has.
During a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the Pride & Prejudice actor quipped that “it’s been very difficult” having a similar name to the Spider-Man: No Way Home star because “I was here first. But he’s enormously famous.”
Hollander proceeded to recall when his agency once mixed up him and the actor via email and sent Holland’s box office bonus for one of the Avengers sequels to him.
“People in the accounts department of my agency got confused. We were with the same agency briefly. And it was a terrible moment,” Hollander explained with a laugh. “I went to see my friend who was doing theater in England.… I sat smugly in the audience just having done a BBC show for $30,000…the interval came...

Tom Hollander and Tom Holland may share 95% of a name, but what they don’t share is a massive Marvel paycheque.
While appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Tom Hollander revealed that he was once mistakenly sent a box-office bonus meant for Tom Holland. “People in the account’s department of my agency got confused. We were with the same agents briefly. And it was a terrible moment,” Hollander said. “I went to see my friend who was doing theater in England. I sat smugly in the audience just having done a BBC show for $30,000 … the interval came and I checked my email and I got one from the agency saying, ‘Payment slip for first box office bonus for ‘The Avengers.’”
Hollander was curious, but upon opening the email, he was left shaken by just how much it was. “It was an astonishing amount of money,” Hollander said. “It was not his salary.

The first week of After Midnight on CBS brought in viewing numbers that are, well, about what would be expected for a network show airing at 12:37 a.m. in 2024.
The show, an expanded and updated take on Comedy Central’s @midnight that’s hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, averaged 579,000 same-day viewers for its first three installments, according to Nielsen. The Jan. 16 premiere drew 686,000 viewers, based on preliminary figures, which would mean the subsequent two episodes averaged about 525,000 viewers.
Delayed viewing numbers are somewhat rosier: After three days (and not including streaming), After Midnight rose to 819,000 viewers for its first week. Its DVR lift of 240,000 viewers is more than three times bigger than that of The Late Late Show With James Corden (77,000) in the 2022-23 season.
After Midnight is CBS’ replacement for The Late Late Show, which ended its 28-year run, the last eight with Corden as host, in April 2023. The...

Carrying his two new Emmys awards, John Oliver was making his way through the packed HBO afterparty Monday night when he stopped to speak with Deadline about his relationship with fellow late-night hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers.
Together, they launched a limited series podcast, Strike Force Five, during the WGA strike to support their crew members who had been out of work because the shows had shut down due to the strike.
“Honestly the dynamic had less to do with the podcast and more to do with the fact that the strike was so stressful, it was nice to be able to actually lean on each other a little bit,” Oliver said about the quintet staying in constant communication during the work stoppage. “Not even necessarily anything to do with the podcast, just talking to each other regularly on Zoom.”

Roy Wood Jr. confirmed his fans’ lip-reading skills on Monday after Emmy Award audiences caught him mouthing what appeared to be a plea from stage for a new Daily Show host.
Trevor Noah famously left The Daily Show in December 2022, but the Emmys delay means the Television Academy is only now honoring the 2022-23 TV season. In that time, The Daily Show has yet to name a permanent replacement, rotating through guest-hosts instead since this time last year. Early on in that process, Wood, a correspondent for the entirety of Noah’s run, was seen as a viable contender for the role, but he ultimately exited the show in October, once it was clear that the search would drag on — and on.

Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver each came into Monday’s Emmy Awards on a long winning streak. Thanks to being thrown into a new category together, at least one of those streaks was bound to end.
SNL’s six-year streak fell as Last Week Tonight took home the Emmy in the newly created category of scripted variety series. The category came into being this year thanks to a rule change that grouped Last Week Tonight with sketch comedy shows SNL and A Black Lady Sketch Show. The change moved Last Week Tonight out of the talk show category it has dominated in recent years as the Television Academy decided it is materially different than programs like Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert and NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers.

The “Mean Girls” screenwriter is co-creating and starring in a TV version of the film, which reunites her with “30 Rock” collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield.

Exclusive: Straight to Cards, the production company set up 18 months ago by Amber Ruffin and Jenny Hagel, has upped Justin McGriff.
McGriff, who was a creative executive at the company, which has an overall deal with Universal Television, has been promoted to Vice President.

The Writers Guild of America has won recognition for their members — again.
After pushback led by the WGA, broadcast network Fox has relented and agreed to air the award for Writing in a Variety Series during the main Emmys telecast. The writers union had rallied its members to protest the TV Academy’s decision to push the category to the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony.
“The Television Academy, Fox, and the WGA are happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst,” a new joint statement by the three parties reads.
Back in November, the TV Academy upgraded its Variety Special — Live category from the Creative Arts awards to the main Emmys telecast; it was effectively swapped with Writing for a Variety Series. In the interest of time,...

Writers from late-night shows including Last Week Tonight, The Daily Show and The Late Show among others are heading to the Primetime Emmys after the Television Academy performed a U-turn on its decision to exclude a key writing category from the main awards.
The TV Academy, Fox and the WGA have reached an agreement to include the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category, which also includes nominees Late Night with Seth Meyers and Saturday Night Live, during the live telecast.
The TV Academy, which runs the Emmys, set to air on Fox on January 15, had previously stated that the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series was set to be handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys, rather than during the Primetime show.
It had been replaced by Outstanding Variety Special (Live) in November.
However, a campaign from the WGA and a number of high-profile late-night stars including Stephen Colbert,...

After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Stand-up comedian Kenny DeForest, who was a fixture of the Brooklyn comedy scene and appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show with James Corden and the Pete Holmes-helmed HBO series Crashing, died on Wednesday, Dec. 13. He was 37.
On Friday, Dec. 8, DeForest was on a rented bicycle at the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Sterling Place in Prospect Park when he hit an unoccupied parked car, a New York City Police Department spokesperson told NBC News.
He was then taken to Kings County Hospital, where he underwent neurological surgery to remove a piece of his skull in order to relieve pressure from cranial bleeding.
Ryan Beck, a fellow comic and close friend of DeForest’s, organized a GoFundMe amid the late comedian’s hospitalization. In the most recent update, Beck noted that DeForest’s final moments “included some of his favorite songs, stories of his childhood,...

As the fall draws to a close, and the late night talk shows still adjust to their post-strike rhythm (and one host in particular navigates some unexpected health crises), there appears to now be a steady ratings story to be told in live+same day numbers. In adults 18-49, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is emerging as the No. 1 talk show in that key demo, while CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is tops in total viewers.
Boosted this season by the return of NFL Monday Night Football to ABC’s full time lineup, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is so far up 13 percent in total viewers and has pulled off its most-watched fall since 2020, according to ABC. Among adults 18-49 in live+same day, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is first in the demo with originals, averaging a 0.20, followed by “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (0.18) and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert...
