S1.22: Sonnet #113: Visually it doesn't work as well as the sonnet delivery does, which I guess is the preferable way round

This sonnet is a very nice way of saying that all I can think about is you. The writer proclaims that they cannot even tell the difference between a mountain or the sea, because whatever their eye looks at simply takes on the appearance of their beloved due to the strength of their obsession. The delivery of this idea in this short film is mixed as for the most part the words are delivered in narration while the same actress is filmed in Gansevoort Plaza.

In the narration the tone is really nicely done; Donargo's voice is filled with the joy that matches the level of love suggested by the obsession of the sonnet. I liked the playfulness and the sense of wonder in her voice and felt it really fitted the spirit of the sonnet. In terms of the visual delivery, the film seems to be literally playing it out that the writer cannot tell a table from a chair from their lover, as we seem to have Donargo running around the plaza confused by things due her inability to work out what they are. I'm not sure this worked but for me personally the visuals didn't distract from the delivery of the sonnet, so at least there was that. The one area I disagree is the final few lines where the narration and visual met to have the lines delivered direct to camera; at this point the tone is one of sadness, and I'm not sure that is how it works best – or that it really fits with the rest of the film.

Despite this, the delivery of the sonnet text is very good and clear, even if the acting out of it is a bit too literal and the final lines don't totally work.
