a movie looking for a raison d'être

Warning: Spoilers
By chance, an employee finds himself eating a meal in the same restaurant as a small group which includes François Mitterrand, the French president. Now the owner of Mitterrand's fetching black hat, he decides to hang on to the object, convinced it brings him luck. And indeed, his new-found confidence allows him to obtain the promotion he had been hoping for. He is not the only citizen whose life will be changed by the hat...

"Le chapeau de Mitterrand" is composed of a series of vignettes about various people finding success and re-connecting with their true selves thanks to a hat. The hat seems to spell good tidings to its wearers - perhaps because it is magical ? There's a fairy-tale quality about the movie, but with a difference : whereas most fairy-tales make some kind of moral point or highlight some universal truth, the movie doesn't have all that much to tell. Neither does it succeed in creating an uncanny or supernatural atmosphere. Citizens find the hat and things happen to them, period. It is all very, very light and very, very slight.

The whole isn't helped by the presence of a "President Mitterrand" who looks little like the real-life person.

Still, the movie deserves at least some stars for the nice acting and the lively music.
