Warning: Spoilers
If there was a question on how to make an already good show better, the answer should be; throw a ninja at it and make him battle the hero. In a surprising back and forth timeline, the very first scene of the episode is Daredevil fighting a more well-equipped ancient warrior. As Murdock inches closer to the whereabouts of Fisk, he finds himself not the only one doing the hunting. The preparation and moral stain culminate in one precarious night for Murdock.

The cat-and-mouse chase between Murdock and Fisk has escalated. It has a real potential threat for others as Fisk gradually increases the stake. Murdock has to match this bravado in kind, he's tempered himself for what may come. He meets several of Fisk's associates as he prepares himself for what needs to be done, even though it causes a stress on his mind. Aside from the two opposing forces, Murdock's allies are beginning to realize the hefty consequence of their endeavor.

Their involvement and growing number are probably part of how he chooses his decision. The episode has a unique timeline as the ninja fight stretches throughout and between the fisticuffs are events surrounding both hero and villain. Fisk's side also has taken a few hits, the relationships between the major players have been strenuous for a while, but now the cracks are clearly visible. Despite the sense of helplessness on Murdock's side, his actions did corner Fisk slowly.

Fight is as great as ever, especially with the fight between two warriors. Weapons and aerial movements are coordinated fluently. The show's visceral tone has been raised as Daredevil meets his match. Battle of attrition have chipped away at him, and the damaging scars are piling. The episode offers a great deal of surprises even till the end, which already sets a high note for next one.

'Im gonna kill you'

Warning: Spoilers
A very common phrase for the hero/ villain to say to each other. Yet when the entire episode is about killing or sparing (and one of the main themes of the series so far) it makes the statement all the more powerful when murdock says it to fisk near the end of the episode. Overall one of the very best so far with great and engaging fights, shocking deaths and emotionally moments

Surprise!

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not often surprised by television scripts but this episode did a number on my enviable record! :-) After all of his work Daredevil's efforts are thwarted by a surprise event that turns the tables on him. And wouldn't you know it: the change comes from the presence of a beautiful woman. :-)

I must say that in spite of the violence in this series the show is captivating and well paced. This is the great advantage of the story-based serial over the episodic one. There's time to flesh things out.

Yes, it does contain many clichés but I'm starting to think that it's almost impossible to make television without repeating what's been done before. We can only hope that's it's done well and Daredevil has done it pretty well so far. Great episode; not perfect but close.

Another man's evil does not make you good.
jhudson-117046 August 2017
This episode gives us another great fight scene, good emotional/intellectual scenes, and the first face-to-face meeting of our hero and villain...well, technically two.

Let's start with the emotional scenes in this episode. First, there was the incredible scenes of faith and morality between Matt and his priest, Father Lantom. This is a truly great meeting and Lantom tells a great story of the time he saw the devil, in his time as a missionary. It is a powerful scene that informs Matt that just because Fisk is the bad guy, doesn't mean he is the good guy, especially if Matt kills Fisk. There was more powerful scenes when the team find out that their beloved client, Mrs Cardenas, a lovely old lady, was killed, not directly but ordered by Fisk. I am really sad that she is gone as she was so sweet and innocent, but it really helps the storyline and furthers the main characters.

In this episode, we also get two crucial meetings. The first one is between Matt and Fisk. Matt, not in his vigilante guise, meets Fisk's lover, Vanessa, in order to get an insight into Fisk. While meeting her, Fisk happens to stop by. Matt is clearly angry that he is near him right now, but he hides it pretty well when talking with Fisk. Fisk, however, seems like he might think that Matt could be the man in the mask, because his voice and the way he talks about helping people, sounds like the man in the mask on the night of the bombings. While it does look that Fisk is suspicious, he is also clearly dismissing it as Matt is blind.

The fight scene, interlaced with this episode, was fast-paced and brutal. Matt fights against Nobu, a deadly ninja and the leader of the Yakuza, or whoever they are, after Mrs Cardenas is killed. The fight is super-intense as Matt suffers various cuts and wounds. Nobu is accidentally killed in the fight and Matt escapes but not before Fisk arrives and takes a couple shots at him. This is the first time that Fisk meets the man in the mask, and you can see that while Fisk is clearly angry and annoyed at Matt's interference, you can see that he sort of respects Matt's mission of saving Hell's Kitchen.

Also, small thing here, but Foggy now knows that Matt is the vigilante.

+ Fight scene + Matt and Father Lantom + Matt meets Fisk/Fisk meets the Man in the Mask + Powerful emotional scenes + Foggy knows +/- Mrs Cardenas is killed off but it is important to the story.

Final Score: 9.6/10

Explosive, Most Engaging Fight Scene Yet! Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 Episode 9: Speak of the Devil The fight sequence between Nobu and Matt here is the most engaging I've seen since episode 1 so far. It's beautifully choreographed and breath-taking, had me gasping for air, in panic. Wilson Fisk finally takes his advances against the Man in Black, Matt, and Matt finally learns the immense capacity of his biggest enemy.

This episode sheds light on so many aspects of Matt's life, and Fisk's too. Much of this episode is spent with Matt having conversations with Father Lantom, putting his Catholic upbringing in the spotlight. These conversations are vital to Matt's nect decisions including pursuing Mrs. Cardenas' killers and visiting Vanessa. But the highlights are really the bloody combat between Matt and Nobu, and the big reveal in the last few seconds of the episode where our Man without fear's face gets finallt exposed to Foggy. This warrants a long dialogue between the two, in the next episode.

Color of Rage and Heart

Warning: Spoilers
I'm closing in on the end of Daredevil's first season and the pace is picking up just a tad. I like that unlike other superhero shows, Daredevil is able to take its time on one specific storyline rather than jumping around with filler episodes. With that said, we got a bunch of first meetings between characters this week. And I do love the supporting group he's surrounding himself with, including a thought provoking priest who consistently has the best scenes with Matt. I'm just not sure that his team is going to a enough against Fisk's well rounded brutal bunch.

In Daredevil fashion, the villain was introduced within the first scene and we didn't see him until later on when they would flash forward yet again. It's a tactic that Breaking Bad used particularly well and I think Daredevil is following suit. I haven't found the law and investigation side as interesting as I had hoped for this show, but adding Urich into the mix is a welcomed change. Hopefully one that will stick around. Matt decided to take on a role of his own this week by going out as Matt to the art gallery to meet Vanessa. I really didn't see this scene ending well at all and I instantly got excited when I saw Fisk walk in. It's the first time Matt and Wilson have met and it's all the way in episode 9. That would likely not work on network television. But Daredevil also met Fisk this week as it was revealed, as expected, that Fisk was indeed behind the murder of Elena.

The game of cat and mouse that Fisk and DD are playing is very intriguing. And as the priest said, men have used other men's atrocities to justify their own for centuries, so I expect Matt to take that and see that murdering Fisk wont really change anything. He needs justice, or else just another wealthy businessman is going to come in and do the same thing. Even though the Ninja guy wasn't really needed in the story this episode, it was an interesting fight that seemed to come right out of Kill Bill. It was a fun episode and hopefully the last 4 episodes pick up the pace a bit more. I guess it's worth mentioning that Foggy found out about Matt's identity. It was only a matter of time before someone else did, I just hope he doesn't play the typical ticked off best friend that superhero stories too often do.

+Fisk meets Daredevil

+Fisk meets Matt

+Cat & mouse

+Priest scenes

-Pick up the pace a bit

-Law enforcement scenes could be better

8.2/10.

Stopping the Devil looks impossible!
hiren848415 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A big theme so far has been the reluctance for Murdoch to kill people - he is not a killer, yet we've had a couple of characters say, he has to become one. The conversation with the Father was fantastic - Murdoch knows what he can do to stop Fisk but he is not willing to go down that road...even when it seems he has chosen not to take that path, Fisk (the master tactician!) plays on his pressure-point, and beats him (physically and psychologically).

It leaves on a good ending - finally someone finds out! That had to happen at some point and I feel this could be the catalyst for Murdoch's fightback.

The quality of episodes has been great, with lots of action here!

What is this episode?!
Victor_daSilva_14 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode, is the best (until now), and now I am very excited to watch the latest episodes of the season.

We finnaly saw Fisk and Matt in the same place, as "civilians" and as in their "secret identities", which, for me, was very well constructed by the script. And the death of Ms Cardenas... Men, what is this episode... Not to mention the discovery that Foggy made in the end.

I'm only can say: "congrats, what is this episode."

Gravitas
Leofwine_draca12 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A good episode again. Dialogue heavy but the dialogue has real weight and importance to give it the appropriate gravitas, almost an epic feel. The action takes the form of a ninja battle we cut to throughout the episode which I wasn't too keen on, but it has decent choreography so I'll forgive it that.

"Are you struggling with the fact that you don't wanna kill this man, but have to? Or that you don't have to kill him, but want to?"
sebtwister25 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The last episode was a great character piece on Fisk and this one goes deeper into Murdock's character. It dives deeper into his religious beliefs, why he visits the priest (Peter McRobbie) so often for confessions and the type of relationship they have.

It also has arguably one of the bloodiest fights in the shows history when he fights Nabu. The episode is bookended by this fight as it starts with the brutal beating Daredevil takes, then it flashes back to the events that lead him there. Daredevil is lured into a trap because he is consumed by rage because of the murder of Elenor, who was a close friend to Karen and Foggy.

It exposes Murdock's character flaws, for instance he never wants to kill, but deep down he has urges. Yet another really good episode.

Better than usual!
zmos997 July 2021
Better than the usual Daredevil episode for a couple reasons. First of all, there is more happening in this episode do you don't have to sit through quite as much exposition as usual. Also, they took the epic martial arts fight at the end of the story and basically spread it out throughout this episode, trying to break up the monotony LOL.

Warning: Spoilers
Best episode so far, best action scene so far and incredible acting performances. Finally we get to see the awaited scene with Matt and Fisk in the same room then seeing their conflict reaching its peak point.

With the episode ending with a cliffhanger I'm interested to watch the upcoming events.

Awesome

Warning: Spoilers
Continuing my marathon of this series and what a wonderful episode. The contact between Murdock and Fisk in the gallery room was frightening. I remembered that Senhora Cardeñas died, in fact very sad. The fight between Daredevil and Nobu is wonderful and will take anyone's breath away. Kingpin fighting is really scary, the guy doesn't suffer a scratch. I saw a supposed critic on YouTube saying that this series has no action, he must be blinder than Murdock, since the first episode there are several action scenes, one better than the other. And I also remembered that Nelson found out about Murdock's alter ego like that. As much as I grew up watching Spider-Man and Batman (and both are my favorite heroes), I find these plots where the hero can't tell his friends or family about his real identity very annoying. I know that telling them would bring danger to them, but with that would come much more interesting plots than just hiding in the shadows and being a one-man army. Episode nine watched on March 8, 2024.

Intense Episode [8.2/10]
panagiotis199315 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Live Reaction / Review for Daredevil Season 1 Episode 9: Who the hell is this red ninja? I always enjoy the conversations between Matt and the father. They stabbed the old lady to death? That sucks! What's going on? The ninja Is absolutely destroying him, is it a dream? I hope so. Fisk knows how to pretend, love it. I wonder when Matt will get his own suit and also I wonder who will make it for him. It's refreshing to see a hero who has faith in God. Wait is the ninja the japanese criminal that works for Fisk? I think so based on his eyes. The ninja got burned alive? I didn't expect that. Oh boy Fisk can give a serious beating. Wow what a cliffhanger. Now Foggy knows that Matt is the man behind the mask. My rating is 8.2/10.
