1.91: Sonnet #59: Cleverly played to change the subject and to produce a new context which works surprisingly well

This 59th sonnet and 91st film in the Sonnet Project series are one in the same but yet different in what they are doing. Reading the piece for myself, it seems that the writer is mindful that there is nothing that has not been or been done before, but yet at the same time he struggles with the idea that there was every really anything as beautiful back in the day as his subject is now. It is a twisty one to read and it took me several readings to really get the point made since it is not as clear as some of the others which do a similar thing of questioning other things of beauty in comparison with the subject.

As a result of this I was interested to see if the film could shed more light on it, and make the meaning clearer by virtue of having more than just words on paper (screen) to provide the content. I was a bit surprised but quite pleased to find that the film does this, but does it with an entirely different reading. Instead of being about a person or people, it is about an architect designing a beautiful new building, only then to discover that the unknowing inspirations he drew from are all around him, and while his is new and thus shinier, he ponders on the record of the time and how they must have been at the time. I am reading into this a bit perhaps, because of course the words and language do not change although the delivery of the words and the location bring this out.

I liked the film for this, although it must be said that technically it is not as strong as the idea. The music is dinkly and gives it a comedic air that doesn't fit, while the 'look' of the film is a bit too colorful for my taste, ironically feeling a bit too simple and polished in its look – like all the detail has been scrubbed from it. It is very low budget so perhaps this is understandable – the central performance feels a little bit 'brought in on budget' too, however it does still work because the idea and interpretation is pleasing and works surprisingly well.
