Not bad, but not something I would rewatch
jerrellim14 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Overall, it is a decent show with a good cast. There are however some annoyances I have had while watching this show.

Plot: The show felt directionless, with no clear plan or goal. Characters were bouncing from one idea to the next to defeat Gwi almost every episode which some might argue was intentional but it certainly left me feeling as if the script was written on the day of shooting.

<//Spoiler> The show suffered several plot holes, the largest of which occured near the end of the series, with the Sung Yoel, the Scholar, deciding not to kill Gwi with seemingly no reason other than to drag the show to 20 episodes long. This could reflect a lack of planning of events in the writing process. <Spoiler//>

The lack of story progression is also an issue especially poignant in the first 6 episodes, whereby the trope of Sung Yoel saving Yang Sun and giving her blood is repeated 2 times or more. Rather than a build up to the climax, the story spends its first few episodes following Sung Yoel to and fro his residence saving Yang Sun from danger at the very last moment time and time again.

Although quite uninteresting, it is not lost on me that the introductory episodes helped to establish a level of intimacy and romance between Yang Sun and Sung Yoel, which compels the viewer to sympathise with Sung Yoel's background and identity and his "sacrifice". The role reversal between Yang Sun and Sung Yoel in the later episodes (whereby it is Yang Sun who constantly finds herself bringing the injured Sung Yoel back to his residence and even offering him her blood) is somewhat touching and commendable from a literary standpoint. Furthermore, by drawing a parallel between Sung Yoel's dead lover and his current one, the film highlights the conflict between man and beast internally and this too is also compelling.

Finally, aside from the relationship of the main protagonist, no other felt moving or even genuine. Case in point, the relationship between the Queen and the Crown Prince was set up as an arranged marriage and the Queen was given no prior characterisation aside from her hatred towards her Father. Yet, the script attempts to convince the audience that their relationship was something more. There was a sense that the script tried to do too much with too little (time) which left me feeling that most other romances in the script were very paper-thin. (5/10)

Scoring/Background music: The scoring was good, which to me meant it served its purpose in conveying the characters' emotions, but not really something I would put in a playlist and listen to on a regular basis. Music was played at fitting and appropriate times with lyrics matching events happening. Fade-outs of the music could have been timed with the start of a new scene to make it more appealing. (7/10)

Lines and line delivery: Acting was great. However, actors seemed to be constrained by a weak script. A decent chunk of the script seemed to be information relay, which is not really needed and can take place off screen, giving more screen time to character development. Exposition could have been replaced with actual scenes non-verbally providing information to the audience. Rather the script chooses to "tell, not show".

Another pet peeve I had with the script was the fact that the characters often stated the obvious, as if intentionally dumbing down the dialogue because the writer could not trust the audience enough to be a little more discrete. Also infuriating was the number of times a character asks "Is that true?" immediately after being told of a fact or right after a major revelation.

A sort of meta-reflective dialogue towards the last part of the show whereby Yang Sun uses the Night Scholar novels to refer to the show as a whole is refreshing. (5/10)

Special effects and choreography: Fight choreography did not fall into the common one-at-a-time pitfall which plague many good movies, whereby the hero or protagonist, badly outnumbered, is able to take on a group of enemies because they approach him one at a time. Special effects were modern and realistic, keeping the audience immersed in the fictional world. (8/10)

enjoyable

Had I rated before the tenth episode, it would have been a 5, maybe 6. The acting above all felt shallow and lame. The male lead, whose character is supposed to live in hell, perpetually torn between his human heart and his vampire instinct, could not convey those affects. Gwi was so handsome I wanted to die (or get bitten), but his face was still, expressionless, a pity. He could, should, have been sexier, naughtier, mightier. The staging didn't help either. It felt fake and cheap. In a vampire story everything else has to look real so we can believe that vampires exist, at least whilst watching.

Then came the tenth episode. For some reason, almost everything improved. Or I just got used to it? Anyhow, I started to really enjoy the show. There was a scene (can't remember the episode) with a young girl hurrying over to help the fallen scholar. Tears gushed out. After that, I got seriously hooked. It was like a spell, with the beautiful song "Love You Again" highlighting" the romance.

The ending was moving too. I like that Gwi, even though he didn't have a human heart, knew what it meant to be a decent human. And I felt for him. Basically, he is the main reason why I managed to bear until episode 10.

So, if you can see this as a fairytale and not pour too much expectations in it, you may like it, even love it.

Generations of Kings fighting against the vampire that helped build the kingdom, who controls the throne.
ricalessandrayoung17 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The story is gripping from the get go, with just enough mystery to keep me watching until the end.

The immortal vampire Gwi had been summoned to help build a new kingdom after the fall of the Goryeo dynasty, but the price to pay in exchange for his help becomes too great for the succeeding monarchs to tolerate. Possibly the strongest vampire in all the land, the quest to get rid of him is tough and seemingly impossible. It spans generations.

Kim Sung Yeol was a loyal friend of Crown Prince Junghyun when he got bitten and turned into a vampire. His friend and family murdered for treason, he vowed to live on with the sole intent of destroying Gwi once and for all.

More than a century later, he meets a young girl dressed as a man working hard to support her impoverished family by selling books. He commissions her help in locating something and they develop a good friendship, which eventually leads to romance.

The chemistry between the two leads started out great, but turned stale towards the end as far as the lead actress went. Luckily, her leading man was Lee Joon Gi, and his skills as an actor were more than enough to carry out the brunt and intensity of their relationship.

The soundtrack is good too, though sometimes felt out of place. The fight sequences could have been better.

Perfect gothic delight - Korean style
teskaya10 August 2019
This show does every thing a little better than the normal costume k-drama. The essential revenge-plot while obvious, holds suspense throughout thanks to a truly magical villain and title character. If you like a supernatural drama, it does not get better. This thanks to a production that holds a loving attention to detail that simply does not occur in increasingly vapid western vampire dramas. The melodrama is strong and unabashed and truly gothic, even though dressed as it is in delicious hanbok. The music is very strong and underscores the drama perfectly throughout. A little too weak/innocent/optimistic female lead is perhaps the only tiny scratch in the otherwise perfect show but there are other female characters that are deeper and more interesting so in the end it's all so very satisfying and a true feast for the eyes, ears and feels. A true sign of its quality is that it is equally delectable on second viewing. (Normally one is quite worn out by the slow build and obvious feel-stalling of a k-drama by the time it ends...) When it ended I immediately started over.

Great Drama if you like Vampire styles!
natassa-athens9 October 2020
Great plot series if you are fond of Vampire style dramas.

Love, kindness, humanity, action together with evil and intrigues.

I admired the AMAZING acting of Lee Joon Gi! His face expressions were one of a kind! He managed to move even little face muscles in order to give an intense and appealing emotion! Very Well Done!!!

Great acting also by the woman lead, the prince-king and an exceptional acting by Lee Soo-hyuk, the evil vampire!

All of them were fantastic!

I liked it very much!

Beautiful costumes, good story, great acting, just a few minor issues
leahcubed5 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
8/10 is my rating. This is a 2015 South Korean paranormal television drama with 20, 60 minute, episodes.

Jo Yang-sun (Lee Yu-bi) lives in an alternate Josean dynasty as the daughter of a deposed nobleman. Although not guilty of treason, with no way to prove the false claims, her family loses everything. Yang-sun dresses up as a man in order to sell books to support her family. Kim Sung-yeol (Lee Joon-gi), is over 100 years old but has the handsomeness and virility of the young man he once was. He is a guardian vampire responsible for punishing those of his kind who break the rules. He tragically lost his first love to an evil vampire and has spent years mourning and blaming himself for his loss. His focus has been finding a way to defeat this much stronger and more ancient vampire. The vampire was summoned by the royalty to establish and protect the elite structure and serves above the current monarchy. There is a document many are looking for that holds the key to destroying Gwi (Lee Soo-hyuk), the evil vampire, but it has been carefully hidden and zealously guarded. Fate binds Yang-sun, Sung-yeol and the current Crown Prince and their paths entwine throughout their lives. Will they have the courage to do what must be done to destroy the evil vampire? Will love blossom in the most unlikely place?

Despite a lot of flaws I still liked this drama. The story itself is very compelling and the acting by the entire cast is very good. T in the love story is believable and the chemistry between the leads is good. Spoilers*** I found parts just a bit silly in that the vampires were not completely real looking. In parts it was apparent that the male lead had a wig and not a great one at that. It was also apparent this was filmed several years ago as the film quality was just slightly less than what they do currently. What really lessened this for me was the way so many of the characters seemed to be on a suicide mission so that they would even argue about who should live and who should die. You, you should live but no I am going to go do this thing that will lead to my certain death. Well, if you die then I am going to die. And then it would start again. The "2nd guy" who was the crown prince for much of the story, seemed to fall in and out of love dramatically quickly. He also would make these statements about dying for the cause but, when it came right down to it, he would be scared and emotional. Then a couple of scenes later he is right back to talking tough. 2nd guy also let lead girl get literally tortured. She didn't forgive him which was good because he literally allowed her to take the blame for him and then was aware of her being severely tortured. 1st guy also did not come to her immediate rescue. I think one of my favorite characters was the evil vampire, Gwi. He was so consistent throughout and just very vampire like. It ended okay but they did the typical I am just going to go off for a year and you are going to wait and pine for me. The lead girl was so pretty when she was dressed as a girl I would have liked if she had more screen time as a girl. And there were so many opportunities for side romance I found it disappointing that the side romance wound up being between 2nd guy and a look alike of the male lead's first love. They fell for each other so quick it was not completely believable and then she just dies which made it pointless anyway. So it is a good film of the genre - actually very good but it was so close to being great that, the fact that it could have been lessens the enjoyment a little

Vampires Korean Styles
jgardiner-871-72672919 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Scholar that walks in the Night I really enjoyed this story. It's a different take on the European idea of Vampires and I like the Korean idea of the reaction and development of their vampires and vampire hunters. It is a long tale of a vampire that has taken over the palace and is controlling the running of it. Lee Joon Gi is also a vampire but of a more friendly variety. His girl friend and himself were both victims of the Palace Vampire and he LJG has been many years waiting for his lover to reincarnate but in the meantime he meets this woman who is dressing like a man so she can support her family by selling books. He become friendly with her and get her to find books that he is interested in reading. I thought they meet during the night times as he cannot come out during the day but a super vampire gives him his powers because he is being chased by other vampires. This gives LJG the power to appear during the day. He begins to have feelings for his book collector.

He's so stoic in his treatment of her pretending he has no feelings for her but has managed to kiss her a few times.

Even though he loves her it frustrates and annoys me so much when he says" I am your owner. You can not go anywhere. You can not get sick. You can not leave this place without my permission. You can not shed tears. You now belong to me. You can not put yourself in anymore danger." He didn't say the thing that makes me the most furious "You can not die without my permission ."

I had forgotten how awful these people are and why atrocities they will go to just to keep their throne. For all of that they employed an almost indestructible monster, a vampire. It became such a terrible curse for everyone. Its so stupid that they think that they can control this vampire who has no heart. You put these stories into your mind and heart but then they are quickly forgotten as you move on. Your brain sorts them and when it becomes overloaded it chooses the ones to keep and the ones to abandoned so we are told that we only use 10 % of our brains function. Interesting bit to mull and ponder about.

So much torture. Is the history of Korea really like this?? So getter a false confession is alright with them. So long as they get the result they want. So now they are all confessing yet none of them is the one (Lustful Student).

I said this before when Lee Joon-gi cries we all cry. He has the power to move our hearts. That is why we love him so much and the reason I'm rewatching this movie. It must be challenging to fight in all of those period clothing but he is amazing. I just love this guy Lee Joon-gi. He is such an awesome actor. He just becomes the character. Everything he goes through we go through,

This is interesting viewers Gwi loved a mortal woman (a human) once they had a child. He told Kim So-eun as Lee Myung-hee/Choi Hye-ryung "children of a vampire and a human being can kill vampires" Their child was born 200 years ago. So he assumes that he/she is dead.

I recommend this to everyone. It's a great story and wonderful acting on the part of the main actors. Excellent cinematology and photography. Scenery and backgrounds just stunning loved it. "The pen is mightier than the sword."

Cheesy and Silly but Still Enjoyable
fake_moviestar10 October 2020
This show was about halfway there to a really good show, hence my rating. First what was good: the concept/story was interesting and original. Some of the CGI was decent, like wounds healing and the cool blurry-super fast running. Most of the time the acting was really good. Lee Yoo-Bi as the adorable Jo Yang-Sun was a lovely breath of fresh air, a female lead who was ridiculously cute and pretty and just so easy to like - I felt like I was falling in love with her myself, so I could see why Kim Sung Yul did too. She was also a very good actress! Lee Joon-Gi is great in everything he does, and he really gave it his all in this, but there were certain scenes that just felt super cringy, although I feel like that was more the fault of the directing and writing than his acting.

The star for me was actually Lee Soo-Yuk as the evil vampire Gwi - he was INCREDIBLE and honestly stole the whole show. His character was enigmatic, ruthless, sexy, and cunning, coupled with an incredible look (the hair+wardrobe+makeup was stunning!) combined to create the most interesting character in the show. I actually would have loved to have seen a flashback episode of his character.

Now for the bad: there were a LOT of silly/cheesy scenes in this. The angst was almost too much for even me, and I love me some angst. Also most of the music was terrible - there were a few background music pieces that were good, but most of the time a serious and well acted scene would feel overacted and over-dramatic because of a bad song. There were a few really bad CGI scenes as well. Rounding all this out my rating is a 5. Most of that rating is because of how much I loved Gwi. However, I will say that once I accepted the fact that this show was going to be a bit silly, I found myself enjoying it.

Vampire Diaries
Park_Min11 December 2023
The poorly written prologue wasn't a good sign going into this drama. The leads didn't develop their relationship naturally, most of what we got to signify their romance was long dreamy stares. That's pure lazy writing. This what their romance was based off which made it hard to care about their romance, let alone their unmatched chemistry. If we were to ignore the romance, then we are left with the vampires which were equally lacking. The pacing of the storyline seemed uneven, resulting in moments of sluggishness followed by rushed progress. The bad guy barely showed up in the first half. Although I didn't expect much but the ending was just too boring.
