Returning for Password Season 2, the stakes get higher for the competition. Emmy-winning host Keke Palmer tells The Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon, and Deal or No Deal Island host, Joe Manganiello about a new challenge. Pablo Berger’s “Robot Dreams,” which gets a theatrical release from Neon at an as-yet-unannounced time this year, was one of the animated delights of 2023. The Spanish/French hand-drawn dramedy (adapted from Sarah Varon’s wordless graphic novel) concerns the bittersweet friendship between lonely Dog and Robot, which he buys for company, in a version of ’80s Manhattan populated with animals. It’s garnered awards buzz in a longshot quest for an Oscar nomination this season.
After premiering at Cannes, “Robot Dreams” earned the Annecy Contrecham Award along with The Animation Is Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize. It was also selected as the runner-up for Best Animated Film by both the Los Angeles and Boston Film Critics groups.
Although the Spanish director was enamored with the graphic novel when he read it in 2010, he didn’t consider turning it into an animated feature until after making two live-action films,...

Barcelona-born director Carla Simón, whose sophomore film “Alcarràs” clinched the 72nd Berlinale Golden Bear last year, received the 2023 National Cinematography Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by Spain’s Ministry of Culture.
On hand to present the award in a ceremony held at the San Sebastian Film Festival was Miguel Iceta, Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sports, who first addressed Simón in Catalan before switching to Spanish: “With only two feature films, you have left your mark on the recent history of cinema in our country: a short but undisputed trajectory in terms of its strength and personality, recognized both nationally and internationally. A career that is nothing but the promise of a much longer and fruitful one.”

From Slick Rick and 2Pac to Shyne and Bobby Shmurda, prison time impacts musical careers, mostly for the worst. Young Stoner Life (Ysl) top dog Young Thug has been incarcerated for more than a year on charges of conspiracy to violate the Rico Act. Yet, in spite of that tragedy and turmoil, he’s here to set the record straight with his first album since 2021’s Punk, assisted by executive producer Metro Boomin and a supporting cast of his A-list rap peers.

“Business is business,” Young Thug says at the tail end of “Parade on Cleveland,” the opening track to his third studio album. Over a particularly hard-hitting 808, the Atlanta rapper proceeds to parrot the phrase 19 more times in under 20 seconds, turning a potentially prosaic statement into a thrilling declaration of intent.
Despite Young Thug’s continuing legal issues, when it comes to spitting wackadoodle lyrics set to quirky trap beats, it’s still business as usual for the Mc. While Business Is Business’s foreboding black-and-white cover art acknowledges Young Thug’s current incarceration upfront, and “Parade on Cleveland” features a voice message from the rapper calling in from a Cobb County detention facility, nearly all of the material on the album was recorded before his 2022 imprisonment. This is made exceedingly clear on the jangly “Cars Bring Me Out,” which includes a dated reference to pandemic side hustles.

Even though he’s been in jail for over a year, nothing is going to stop Young Thug from doing his business — on Friday (June 23rd), the 31-year-old rapper released Business is Business, his third full-length album. Stream it below.
News of the album first arrived via a mysterious Qr code posted to Young Thug’s Instagram last week, which brought fans to a website featuring the artwork for the album (a photo of him in a courtroom alongside several other defendants). After a countdown completed, details of the 15-track album were revealed. On Thursday evening, the record’s executive producer, Metro Boomin, tweeted a version of the artwork along with the caption “I got you for life and after that brodie,” presumably sending a message of hope to Young Thug.

One of the surprise animated films premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this year is called Robot Dreams, a Spanish production made by Catalan filmmaker named Pablo Berger. The delightful animated movie is an entirely dialogue-free story set in the 1980s in New York City, following a dog character known simply as "Dog" as he builds a relationship with his new robot friend. This is Pablo Berger's first animated film, after making the features Blancanieves and Abracadabra previously. It's a super sweet, uplifting story about friendship and even though there's not a single spoken word in the entire 90 minute film, it's still captivating throughout anyway. It's one of these off-beat discoveries from a film festival that I'm glad I took the time to watch. And more good news - Neon has already acquired the film for a US release later in 2023. // Continue Reading ›...

Neon announced today that they have taken the North American rights to Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger’s first animated feature film “Robot Dreams,” based on the award-winning graphic novel of the same name by Sara Varon. The movie will be screened for the first time in Cannes this coming Saturday, May 20 in the Special Screenings section of the festival. The acquisition marks the first sale made at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
According to the official synopsis, “Robot Dreams” “follows Dog, who lives in Manhattan and one day, tired of being alone, decides to build himself a robot, a companion. Their friendship blossoms, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of 80’s NYC. One summer night, Dog, with great sadness, is forced to abandon Robot at the beach. Will they ever meet again?” Well that certainly sounds traumatic (but potentially heartwarming).

If you’ve been paying attention, then you probably know of how David Dastmalchian has become one of the more prolific actors in the superhero genre. Already, he’s added The Dark Knight, Gotham, The Flash and Ant-Man and the Wasp to his resume, so it’d be unwise to assume he’s putting it all behind him.
Speaking of which, it’s beginning to sound like we’ll soon see his return to present day Central City, as a reprisal of the Abra Kadabra role may very well be in the cards. Having been absent ever since giving Team Flash headaches in season 3, one could say the time is right for a comeback.
On that note, here’s what Dastmalchian had to say in a recent interview with ComicBook.com:

The documentary is produced by Ibon Cormenzana’s Arcadia Motion Pictures, whose credits include Pablo Berger’s “Abracadabra,” and co-produced by Mountain Life and Eter Pictures, with the participation of Catalan pubcaster TV3.
In “Path to Everest,” director Josep Serra retraces the journey that led Spaniard Kilian Jornet, one of the world’s greatest-ever mountain runners, to the world’s highest peak, in an intimate portrait that reveals his fears, contradictions and desire to keep finding new challenges.
Jornet Sabadell, who was born in Sabadell, Spain, has already racked up numerous wins on the mountain sports circuit during his short career. He has won the Skyrunner World Series six times, the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc three times, and is a four-time ski mountaineering world champion.

Listen, breakfast is great. It’s so good people have invented an extension of breakfast so they can justify eating it later in the day. (“Brunch,” I’m looking right at you.) Obviously, people are fans.
And while we can commiserate with the desire to have the best breakfast as close by as possible, the good people of “Portlandia” — Peter (Fred Armisen) and Nance (Carrie Brownstein) — take “breakfast near me” to a whole new level in the sketch below. Rather than lay around dreaming of a great meal, this married couple crafts the perfect breakfast experience long before the morning sun rises.

A technically impressive mix of the commercial and the personal, Pablo Berger’s breathless wild ride Abracadabra daringly goes out on several limbs at once. Full-on Spanishness, elements of noir, gothic horror and social commentary fuse into a brightly colored, eye-catching dark comedy that’s inevitably hit-or-miss but never, ever dull — like a more cerebral Alex de la Iglesia, in whose spirit of controlled delirium the film has been made. Indeed, Abracadabra ends up looking very much like a cinephile’s homage to those bits of Spanish film — starting with dirty realism before spinning out into thrillers, gore and the occult...

Last month we shared speculation about what countries Argentina, Chile, Denmark, and The Czech Republic among others might submit to the Oscars this years. And we'll soon have more charts up. Spain narrowed down their finalists to three which is worth noting. The most successful countries in terms of Oscar in the later portions of the alphabet are Spain (19 nominations and 4 wins), Sweden (14 nominations and 3 wins) and Poland (10 nominations and 1 win). If you include the former Soviet Union stats with Russia's stats since 1992, they're approximately tied with Sweden.
Maribel Verdú in "Abracadabra" which is a finalist for Spain
Spain is currently in their longest dry spell of all time in this Oscar category (their last nominee The Sea Inside, which won, was 13 whole years ago). They will select their submission on September 7th but they've narrowed down their choice to the following three pictures:

Screen investigates which films from around the world could launch on the Croisette, including on opening night.
With just over a month to go before the line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival is unveiled in Paris, Croisette predictions and wish lists are hitting the web thick and fast.
Screen’s network of correspondents and contributors around the world have been putting out feelers to get a sense of what might or might not make it to the Palais du Cinéma or one of the parallel sections.
Just like the Oscars, this year’s festival is likely to unfold amid a politically-charged atmosphere. Beyond Trump and the rise of populism across the globe, France will be digesting the result of its own presidential election on May 7. Against this background, the festival will be feting its 70th edition.
Below, Screen reveals which titles might - and might not - be in the running for a place at the...
