Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford's "The Last Video Store" is more than a midnighter ode to mom-and-pop rental shops where countless cinefreaks found their calling. It's a meta-horror blast of nostalgia about how loving movies can be both a blessing and a curse. Kennedy and Rutherford told my Fantastic Fest audience their production is held together with duct tape and passion — which is unmistakably evident in both cases. "The Last Video Store" isn't the sharpest horror genre satire, nor the prettiest pumpkin in the patch, but there's a scrappiness to classic genre homages that makes this a treat for cult film lovers everywhere.

Last year, Ashley Greene (the Twilight saga) and Shawn Ashmore (Adam Green’s Frozen) shared the screen in the Netflix-released thriller Aftermath. Now Deadline reports that Greene and Ashmore have been reunited on the set of the supernatural horror film It Feeds, which is currently in production.
It Feeds will tell the story of a young girl who insists that a malevolent entity is feeding on her. Greene’s character is “a clairvoyant therapist who must confront her own personal demons to save the girl before she is taken completely.” Ashmore is playing “the anguished father, desperately struggling to protect his daughter.”
Deadline doesn’t name the director of It Feeds or the screenwriter, but they do mention that this film is the first in what is planned to be a ten-film slate of genre projects that’s coming our way from Productivity Media Inc and Black Fawn Films.

Nina Kiri, known for her role as Alma on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has joined the cast of dystopian sci-fi adventure “Absolution.”
The title will be brought onto the market at Cannes’ Marché du Film Frontières platform, featuring in its Proof of Concept strand.
The Serbian-Canadian actor is no stranger to genre, having appeared in “The Heretics,” “The Haunted House on Kirby Road” or “Let Her Out.” Soon, she will also be spotted in Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails” alongside Jessie Buckley.
Directed by Filip Kovacevic, “Absolution” – a co-production between Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro – takes place in a barren wasteland, far removed from the mythical city of gods, with only one human settlement left.
Under the leadership of a zealous priest, who started conducting human sacrifice rituals after experiencing a religious vision, people are dying out. But things start to change when his younger brother finds a mysterious young woman, buried in a strange capsule.

Meta jokes, perfect pace and sophisticated storytelling are wielded with skill by playful director Cody Calahan
Canadian writer-director Cody Calahan has been building something of a reputation in horror circles for his playful, narratively sophisticated work in what seem like superficially pulpy films, such as Antisocial, Let Her Out and The Oak Room. His latest offering is pretty on-brand, with winking meta-jokes, such as having the central character Joel (Evan Marsh from Shazam!) be a journalist who writes about horror films. What’s more, when we first meet him, he’s pitching a story to a horror film producer (Gord Rand) about a serial killer who is a taxi driver, a joke that pays out satisfyingly much later. In less skilful hands, gags like this would be highly irritating, but Calahan and the cast get away with it thanks to fine comic timing and likable ensemble playing.

Screened as a selection of the virtual 2020 Fantasia Film Festival. Many stories begin with, "a man walks into a bar." They are often light jokes, but some involve bone-chilling circumstances and plot twists that we would never expect to follow. The latter transpires in The Oak Room, a suspenseful thriller from Canadian filmmaker Cody Calahan (Let Her Out) and written by Peter Genoway (Masks). The creators set the story during a frosty storm in a small, dim-lit bar. What captures our attention right away is the filmmakers' ability to generate anxiety around a variety of storylines and surprise us with sudden twists and turns in the film. Calahan also highlights the tremendous value and significance of well-crafted, enigmatic storytelling. A drifter named Steve (Rj Mitte) arrives at the bar in his Canadian hometown, in the middle of a raging blizzard. But he doesn't seem too welcome by its owner, Paul...

Production on The Oak Room began in the Summer of 2019. Since then, the film has been completed. And, Cody Calahan's (Let Her Out) latest is set to release in North American, soon. Part drama and part thriller, The Oak Room takes place in an old bar, at closing time. Then, a drifter has a story to tell - a tale about mistaken identities and characters being double-crossed. This title stars: Rj Mitte ("Breaking Bad"), Peter Outerbridge (Suicide Squad), Ari Millen, Martin Roach and several others. Now, fans of suspenseful thrillers can find a trailer and poster, for the film, here. The trailer shows several characters entering the bar. One man promises a dark tale, while others search for hidden items. A fight breaks out. Meanwhile, this bartender has his own tale to tell. A slow burn thriller, The Oak Room brings lots of characters together, at a remote locale.

In this day and age of cookie cutter remakes and PG-13 so-called horror films, it’s somewhat refreshing when an artful, original, and engaging film like Let Her Out comes along to restore hope that not all is lost. Even though it has some problems, namely some rather stiff dialogue and an underwhelming supporting cast, it’s still – along with The Sublet - the best and most fully realized film that Black Fawn Films (Bite, Bed Of The Dead) and director Cody Calahan (the Antisocial films) have produced.

As far as psychological body horror films go, Cody Calahan’s Let Her Out plays all the expected Cronenbergian beats while exuding a neon hue. Nothing more, nothing less. Canada’s Black Fawn team once again work their indie charms through low-budget tightrope walking, and bring supernatural unrest without some Toronto-sized price tag.
This is a cool, calm and collected attack on sibling rivalries, compact and delusional enough to cruise through a psyche-bending battle of inner-wits. Blackouts skip time while a woman learns about the sister she never knew, until Calahan unleashes a skin-crawling finale that makes up for otherwise mundane plot navigating. Creeps, crawls and all the grossness in between soon rise – it’s enough to keep genre fans engaged on character corruption alone.

Leave it to a movie to introduce you to a concept you'd never heard of. In this case, the idea of "vanishing twin" which is the layman's term for what happens when one twin dies in utero and is then partially or completely absorbed by the other baby. This idea is at the centre of Cody Calahan's new horror movie Let Her Out.
Relative newcomer Alanna LeVierge stars as Helen, a bike courier who has a fairly serious accident. As she recovers, she begins to experience semi-regular blackouts which are believed to be the result of a malignant tumor which doctors believe to be the remnants of her vanishing twin. As you may have now guessed, the vanished twin is evil, is taking over during Helen's blackout moments and slowly trying to bury the "real" Helen.
