Each year there’s always a growing excitement for the start of FrightFest but opening with You’ll Never Find Me quickly quells that buzz.
This part of the Glasgow Film Festival is known for being completely different to the rest of the festival; the films are often a mix of absurd and crazy, a different kind of audience and very much its own thing with a unique personality. You are never short of interesting films even if they are generally poor – they will at least have a few moments throughout that spark joy.
So there is always an expectation that FrightFest’s opening gambit will be what sets the tone for the rest of the weekend. This is one of many issues with You’ll Never Find Me, it’s not absurd nor crazy and barely interesting. Much to the relief of FrightFest it certainly didn’t represent the festival as...

There’re countless moments throughout Tiago Teixeira’s feature debut Custom that play like Barker, Nakata or early Cronenberg. Haunting, sexy, deeply disturbing stuff. Icky, sticky seediness, grained-up and stamped onto videotape, like The Ring made for OnlyFans. Deeply dour, but in a good way.
A micro-budget stab at tackling the nefarious underbelly of online sex work, Custom is – much like Teixeira’s shorts (FrightFest alums Dog Skin and Molar in particular) – a mood piece; more interested and involved with its world and themes than its characters. Although it must be said that leads Abigail Hardingham (Nina Forever) and Rowan Polonski (Kingsman) get thoroughly stuck in as artsy couple Harriet and Jasper; amateur pornographers who find themselves tangled up in a bizarre, VHS-themed nightmare, courtesy of their newest client.
But that’s just about all the plot we get. Teixeira instead using much of the mystery as more of a...

After an acclaimed festival run beginning with winning the 2023 SXSW Grand Jury Award earlier this year, writer/director Paris Zarcilla’s debut feature, Raging Grace, is set for theatrical release next month. A brand new trailer unveiled today highlights some of the bug-crawling nightmares unleashed in the “coming of rage” gothic horror story.
Brainstorm Media & Doppelgänger Releasing’s acclaimed horror film releases in select theaters on December 1 and will be available on demand December 8.
The film follows “Joy, an undocumented Filipino immigrant who is struggling to do the best she can for her daughter when she secures the perfect job: taking care of an extremely wealthy but terminal old man. The new position pays well and guarantees a roof over their heads. But very soon, Joy and her daughter Grace start to realize everything is not as it seems. Something is festering beneath the surface, threatening all they have worked for.

Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has pre-bought UK & Irish rights to Damien Leone’s horror sequel Terrifier 3 from The Coven, having released the first two movies in the franchise.
David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera are set to reprise their roles as Art the Clown and Sienna, respectively, in the Christmas-themed horror movie which will hit North American theaters on October 25, 2024.
A statement this week from Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting revealed that villanous Art the Clown will “unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.” Filming is expected to get underway in January, 2024.
The threequel is produced by Phil Falcone (Terrifier franchise) and is directed and written by Damien Leone (Terrifier franchise). As we revealed earlier this year, the film is understood to be getting a budget in the low-mid seven figure range, a significant increase on that of the sequel.

After a successful run on the festival circuit, found footage sci-fi horror film Hostile Dimensions is poised to unleash multiverse madness. Screen Daily reports that Dark Sky Films has acquired the feature for North American release in 2024.
Hostile Dimensions is a twist-filled multiverse horror from writer/director Graham Hughes, whose previous film Death of a Vlogger was a FrightFest hit in 2019 and garnered critical acclaim.
Hughes also stars in the film, alongside Annabel Logan.
Hostile Dimensions tells of “two documentary filmmakers who decide to investigate the disappearance of a graffiti artist who seemingly ‘vanished’. As they delve deeper into their research, they encounter an ominous freestanding door which leads them on a dark journey through the dimensions behind it. Determined to uncover the truth the pair soon realise they have stumbled across something far more terrifying than they could have ever imagined.”
Anything goes in the multiverse.

Huge news for fans of old-school horror as Bloody Disgusting and Screambox have acquired U.S rights to one of my favorite horror films of the year, Here for Blood, an over-the-top gory and insanely fun home invasion slasher that’s no doubt going to gain cult status.
The news was first reported by JoBlo over the weekend.
Directed by Daniel Turres, Here for Blood follows a down-on-his-luck wrestler (Shawn Roberts; Albert Wesker in the Resident Evil films) and his girlfriend (Joelle Farrow) who are having a hard time making ends meet. When his girlfriend finds herself overwhelmed by exams, muscle-bound wrestler Tom O’Bannon steps in to cover one of her babysitting gigs.
But his chill night of junk food and video games quickly takes a turn for the cult-ish when the home is invaded by a gang of mask-wearing maniacs. Isolated and unprepared, Tom, his girlfriend, and a...

Raging Grace has already featured at a number of festivals this year, most notably SXSW where it picked up the Narrative Feature Jury Award and Thunderbird Rising Award for Best Debut, but sometimes the buzz around a movie doesn’t quite live up to the hype, which can leave you wondering what all the fuss was about. However, when it comes to Raging Grace, all plaudits are fully deserved.
Raging Grace tells the story of Joy, an undocumented Filipina woman living in the UK with her daughter, Grace. In a desperate attempt to gain citizenship quickly she saves all the money she can from her housekeeping jobs. Day after day she toils whilst listening to the ignorant, offensive and demeaning comments from the people she works for. Joy must also juggle her day job with being a full-time mother to her mischievous daughter.
But, one day, Joy gets a break.

Since the publication of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1886 there have been over 120 adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. The adaptations have changed and evolved to keep the story fresh; these include a Blaxploitation retelling, Dr Black and Mr Hyde, and Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, where the good Doctor transforms into a woman. The latest reimagining of this classic is arguably its most diverse, as Jekyll and Hyde are both transgender women.

Stewart Sparke is no newbie when it comes to giant rubber monsters and bucketfuls of goo. With two big silly indie creature features already under his belt in past FrightFest favourites The Creature Below and Book of Monsters, you’d think he’d be tiring of this sort of thing by now. Ready to shift gears into a much cleaner romantic comedy, or something that doesn’t involve having to scoop coagulated brain juice out of your work shoes every evening. But with this third effort, he confirms what we probably already knew; not only is Sparke the king of this very specific brand of lovingly batshit micro budget crowd-pleasers, neither he nor his team are going anywhere either. They’re simply having too much fun.
A sort of spiritual sequel to 2018’s Book of Monsters, How To Kill Monsters is another naturally funny, adoringly made stab at the old-school genre nuts-and-bolts.

Many genre figures have had biographical films done about them, Boris Karloff, Kane Hodder, and Robert Englund just to name a few. But I Am Monsters! is a little different from the rest. It’s a filmed adaptation of the autobiographical one-man show of the same name by Nicholas Vince.
For those for whom the name doesn’t ring a bell, Vince played Chatterer in Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II. That was the start of a long string of films that include another of Clive Barker’s films, Nightbreed, as well as films as diverse as The Black Gloves, They’re Outside and Fuck You Immortality. Coincidentally, his most recent film, How to Kill Monsters, also made its debut at this year’s FrightFest.

London’s Frightfest shows everything from slasher flicks to arty experiments, though I wasn’t prepared for the number of deaths by kitchen utensils
I’m not sure at what point I realised I was losing my grip. Perhaps it was the moment in existential French psychodrama Pandemonium where a recently deceased motorist finds himself being introduced to hell by a 7ft-tall mega-demon; or it could have been the copious vomiting scene in Cobweb, which was the third copious vomiting scene I’d witnessed in 24 hours. Either way, by the time I got to the third day of Frightfest, I realised it was time to go home – even though, for the crowds of gore devotees gathered outside the cinema behind me, this was just the halfway point.

Five minutes and four mutilated corpses later, Jamie is the only person left when the police show up. With no creature in sight the authorities suspect that Jamie is the culprit; she is questioned at the police station and held in the cells. When you watch horror movies you may well imagine that it would be great to be wearing a suit of armour so that monsters or psychopaths or whatever couldn’t hurt you – but if these big metal suits are so good, how come they were only used in a few small corners of the world? The answer is that they have some serious weaknesses. Faced with heat, marshy ground, swift opponents or simply exhaustion, many people who fought in them died because of them. Joshua Warren’s memorable little Frightfest short addresses another risk.
There isn’t very much of it – it is, one might say, condensed. When we meet him, the knight (Alexander Lincoln) is running, perhaps fleeing a battlefield. One cannot run for long in steel armour. Ascending a small hilltop, he seeks shelter in a stone gazebo and slumps, exhausted. Then something happens to one of his gauntlets,...

"Danger! Microbial hazard!" Raven Banner has unveiled an early teaser trailer for Black Mold, an indie horror film from filmmaker John Pata. This first premiered at Panic Fest 2023 earlier in the year, and is also playing at FrightFest in the UK coming up soon. While exploring a decrepit and abandoned facility, an auspicious photographer faces off against her traumatic past. Brooke and her friend Tanner end up trapped inside of the old facility by a "volatile threat" - the longer their attacker keeps them in there, the more it becomes clear there’s something else profoundly wrong with the place... The film stars Agnes Albright, Andrew Bailes, Caito Aase, Maisie Merlock, and Jeremy Holm. FrightFest says this "introduces the pitfalls of urban exploration with hallucinogenic psychological horror." All the gross mold is freaky enough. // Continue Reading ›...

Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause as Drew and May in The Dive. Maximilian Erlenwein: 'It was crucial for me to make it as real and realistic as possible' Maximilian Erlenwein's The Dive takes the plunge with two sisters, Drew (Sophie Lowe) and May (Louisa Krause), as they head off on their annual diving trip together. The isolated location proves to be a threat, however, when May becomes trapped beneath the waves and Drew faces a race against the clock to try to save her. Shot on location in Malta and the neighbouring island of Gozo, Erlenwein was determined to keep the underwater shooting as authentic as possible, which meant both actresses had to learn how to dive. We caught up with him ahead of the film's FrightFest screening and UK release to talk about the challenges.
Do you dive yourself?
Maximilian Erlenwein: Oh, yes. I did a lot of diving when I was younger.

What if there was a supernatural being whose sole purpose was to murder anyone who cheats on their partner? That’s the premise of Cheat, premiering at FrightFest this year.
Variety reports today that Black Mandala has acquired global rights ahead of FrightFest.
Written and directed by Kevin Ignatius and Nick Psinakis (“The Long Dark Trail”), Cheat centers on an urban legend that a supernatural being from the afterlife will violently murder anyone who cheats on their partner.
The film is set in a small Pennsylvania college town where the city’s unusually high suicide rate is finally convincing locals and college students alike that all is not as it seems. The story focuses on a college woman who sleeps with the married man of the host family she is staying with.
Variety notes, “Black Mandala handles sales of its own productions, as well as international sales of third party titles.

Netflix has released a set of first-look images from the upcoming feature on the visionary civil rights activist who was a close advisor to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘Rustin.’
The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, and never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten.

FrightFest have this week unveiled Graham Humphreys’ stand-out poster design for 2023, which marks the 15th appearance for his iconic Monster. Re-Animator’s Herbert West, is clearly referenced by the FrightFest ghoul. He is surrounded by a series of classic ‘mad doctors’ in film. Unsurprisingly, they are all men!
Graham revealed today:
This year’s FrightFest poster share its theme with the annual FrightFest book, exploring the subject of Mad Doctors. Once again, my artwork needed to be built in multiple parts that could be dismantled and rearranged across different formats, allowing individual elements to work on their own.
This year’s annual Bank Holiday event, the UK’s largest celebration of genre cinema, takes place at Cineworld Leicester Square between Thurs Aug 24 & Mon Aug 28, 2023. This year’s line-up of films will be announced on Thursday 13th July.

In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

Not much is known about Barbarian beyond the fact that it stars exciting up-and-comers Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård and that it’s set, largely, in an Airbnb, that’s (maybe) been double-booked. The trailers have been minimalist, the posters even more so. Even the title seems somewhat vague (who – or what – is the ‘barbarian’ exactly?). You won’t be surprised to hear that it’s all very much on purpose; the mystery is the selling point here, and while there’s certainly a lot to be said, and a lot that this writer wants to say, let’s keep this brief since going in as cold as possible is strongly recommended – Barbarian is the best horror film of 2022. If you’re a genre fan, you should definitely see this movie.

Somehow landing on just the right side of exploitation sleaze, John Swab’s delightfully grungy horror drama Candy Land is very much a film of two halves. The first, a slice-of-life, almost mumblecore mosaic of truck-stop sex workers is exquisite in its own right, landing very much like a particularly well-written pulp novel, and leaning on a terrific ensemble of young actors (with William Baldwin as a tricky lawman). Right from the off, it’s frank with both its sexuality and its depictions of life on the outer rings of society, and would’ve made for something of a neat, if slightly artsier entry into the genre canon.
But then about twenty minutes in, naturally someone winds up dead, and Swab’s script finds a totally different purpose altogether, nestling a particularly bonkers (and brutal) slasher story in amongst the winning drama. The weird thing is it just about works...

Aptly titled for the vanity plate on what is essentially its main character – a shiny new tricked-out Lexus – H4Z4RD has a lot of talent behind the camera. Scripted by Cheap Thrills and 68 Kill’s Trent Haaga, there’s a madcap energy to the writing that’s hard to find in more mainstream genre fare, and with Cub’s Jonas Govaerts on directing duties, it’s a gorgeous, slick-looking journey to take too. Albeit one that sadly never quite seems to equate to the sum of its wickedly ambitious parts.

If you thought you weren’t afraid of heights, think again – this utterly terrifying don’t-look-down thriller from director Scott Mann will have you clutching the sides of your seat in sheer sweaty-palmed panic. As such, it’s about as perfect a closing night film for FrightFest as it’s possible to imagine.
Fall begins with a prologue, in which daredevil climbers Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Runaways’ Virginia Gardner) undergo a devastating tragedy while scaling a rock face. A year later, Becky is still deep in depression and trauma, so Hunter decides that the only thing that will snap her out of it is to climb to the top of the 2,000 foot B67 TV tower — an abandoned communication tower located in the middle of the California desert.

The Lair, Director Neil Marshall’s latest genre piece, had the double honour of opening and receiving its world premiere at the 22nd annual FrightFest in London, England. Before the screening, Marshall stated that the movie “had a lot more in keeping with my earlier films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent”. The premise certainly backs this up - on paper it seems to capture the claustrophobia of The Descent and the action and siege environment of Dog Soldiers, but does it deliver a similar result?

We cannot wait for Everyone to be able to enjoy Terrifier 2 this Halloween season, but while you wait we figured you’d be hungry for the taste these first reactions are offering up.
@SkinTrader2 tweets from FrightFest, “Terrifier 2 promised a lot for fans but somehow it actually delivered more. Ultra gory, stupendously violent and utterly insane on every level.
