Selling the Gore Gazette

The Butcher Mobile (2016)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This thirteen minute interview with Gore Gazette editor/writer Rick Sullivan will probably bring back many great memories for fans of his fanzine. Sullivan starts off talking about his memories of 42nd Street and how he started his publication, which grew quite large for such a magazine. From here he talks about his feud with Bill Landis of Sleazoid Express. From this point on he talks about why he got out of the business and his involvement with DOCTOR BUTCHER, M.D.. If you're a fan of the film or the fanzine then you'll certainly enjoy this interview. I'm so glad that featurettes like this are being produced because normally these type of folks are forgotten about and it's great that people will be reminded of the type of stuff they were doing back in the day.

Rick Sullivan talks about being the editor, publisher, and head writer for the much beloved down'n'dirty grindhouse cinema fanzine The Gore Gazette as well as doing the publicity for the theatrical release of "Dr. Butcher M.D." in New York City. Sullivan points out that The Gore Gazette had a no-holds-barred attitude in which everyone was a fair target and how the zine was started in 1980 as a means of reviewing all the wild exploitation fare playing in theaters on 42nd Street back in the day. Sullivan remembers that the audience at the theater The Lyric used to yell at the screen while the movie was playing and recalls with fondness his appearance on Morton Downey Jr.'s notorious talk show. Moreover, Sullivan admits he had a rivalry with Bill Landis of Sleazoid Express fame over the fact that he took the pictures too seriously and notes that everyone liked Michael Weldon of Pyschotronic fame because he was a real easygoing guy (his story about Weldon accidentally taking LSD for the first time while staying at his house is a gem). Sullivan admits that he came up with the idea for the Butcher Mobile as a way to promote "Dr. Butcher M.D." and candidly discusses how he got busted by the feds for making bootleg copies of Traci Lords porn titles that had been pulled off of the shelves after it was discovered that Lords was underage when she did them. A nice and informative featurette.
