After a second look-It's not that bad but not great.
tgbldkam25 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My first impression was a slow boring predictable movie. After second viewing a few years later, I realized it is not that bad but not great

The Good:

Rumer Willis and Emma Dumont's acting. They seemed to be having a good old time (especially Rumer)

The plot was interesting however....(see the bad)

The last fifteen minutes of the movie picked up and moved forward at a slightly suspenseful pace.

I loved the camera work during the scene Jessica (Emma Dumont) is crawling away and Raven (Willis) is looming in the background.

The dialogue moved smoothly between the two main characters.

The storyline itself was clean and simple (i.e no plot holes and no subplots)

The Bad:

The acting. The minor actors were either wooden or played it like it was a joke (I'm looking at you, Best Man). I still like to know where in the world did they find the cast.

Yes, the plot was interesting but the whole premise was a little silly....who would send their partner to drive up with a sibling without showing him or her a picture of said sibling.

I figured out Raven was the psycho ex girlfriend not the dudes sister, the moment Jessica arrived to drive with Raven. I was amazed it took finding the real Raven's ID to make the alarm bells go off in Jessica's head.

Rumer staring at the camera while speaking on the phone to the ex boyfriend made it appear she was reading off a cue card. (or was she really reading off a cue card?)

The editing was a little choppy.

The Ugly:

The psycho ex-girlfriend trope.

Backroads
lavatch18 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film's title is about the backroads of America, but it is also about the backroads of the human mind. On the surface, "What Lies Ahead" is a road picture. But at its heart, it is a troubling depiction of bloodthirst and revenge.

The beginning of the film seems straightforward as a surgeon in New York named Kyle sends his fiancé Jessica to Georgia to help his sister Raven drive back to New York following the death of their mother. But instead of driving the freeways, Raven wants to take the backroads, and that is the first ominous moment of the trip. Raven is driving a sedan with the ironic personalized license plate of KITTEN.

When Jessica and Raven hit the road, the early experiences of Jessica's missing cell phone, driving off from a roadside stand without paying for burgers, and Raven's troubling attempt to convince a man in a bar that Jessica is attracted to him, set the stage for the major twist of the film: Raven has killed Kyle's sister after he dumped her. Raven blames Jessica for the break-up, and she now plans a diabolical vengeance scenario worthy of Medea.

The film is successful in developing the sinister elements of Raven, and it builds carefully to its climax. Unfortunately, it falls apart at the end with an unsatisfactory and highly unbelievable denouement.

The film developed the protagonist of Raven as a monster, but was unable to deliver on its promise with a vague and inconclusive ending. Were the filmmakers thinking that there would a sequel of the ongoing saga of the Kitten from Hell?

Horrifically Bad !!!!
grlym-468497 April 2019
I believe this movie was made because it was cheaply done and the main actress has rich and talented parents. Cinematography, script and acting is terrible. If it got better, I could not tell you as the whole room begged for me to shut it off after 15 minutes of bad acting and script that nearly takes place in a car conversation. I feel robbed by redbox for charging any price for its rental

a road flop
ops-525355 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Its a road movie , with 2 girls, riding along for new york, where ones going to met a boyfriend. they makes a few stops, at a gaz station, at a street corner shouting at some old men are stopped by the police for speedin, gets away wit tears, cheats the jimboburger boy for the check, enters eventually a bar, gets drunk and nearly shoots some horned up men, picks up a wrecked driver, whom they whack with their shooter, and in the end the girls tries to kill eachother and so on....

you might say this is like thelma and louise, but its definately not. its more the jealous twisted beauty-girl- hater going amock on every girl she defines as better looking than herself.

i dont know if it is the filming or the acting, but its so bad. the psycho looks like she's had a gallon of botox behind her lips. the other one changes appearance from shoot to the next shot aka changing hairstyle and makeup in one sentencs. the soundwork are not professional at all, and i do recommend the use of a car with less engine noise, and wheel whir at next project, i had big trouble hearing what they said, and definately more exhausted then the girl by the noise. the score are i guess meant to make tension to the psychoterror, buuuut its sounds like a squeeling pig trampling on a contrabass in the butchers corner,so beware.

so i'm making flippy-floppy, and trying to do my best , the grumpy old man give one star to this nonsense mock-up of mock shuffling filmmaking,no recommendations from me.

Have seen worse..
ts-000011 June 2022
Was it a masterpiece? No! Oscar worthy? Definitely not.

Rumer has missed the talent gene, where maybe acting isn't really for her? It could of been just a bad script, director & cinematography too.

So many plot holes.. (Spoilers) Didn't anyone discover who,Raven was much sooner? Did the brother never video chat or visit his sister? I mean really his ex was living there, duh!

Did the brother never show his new girlfriend a photo,so she knew beforehand who she was meeting for the trip?

So they take us for this journey to meet a mysterious guy(with brief flash backs)who is all too, busy for anything or anyone but his work.. Only for his girlfriend to decide he wasn't worth talking even with, after she got back to be at some friends home from surviving the psycho ex.

Would I watch it again, just not worth it!

Torturously Artificially Slow
westsideschl11 January 2020
Lacked subtitles for the elderly, disabled, hearing impaired, and ESL viewers. Disrespectful & cheap on the part of the producers especially when audio levels are poor. Almost always a sign of cheap are prolonged opening overhead scenes of car on road, and then of occupant (s) inside. In this case we were bludgeoned into a state of mind numbness by almost the entire movie of seeing through two + cameras attached to the car two women journey hundreds of miles to another city. These two strangers to each other spend the whole movie in stupid artificial chit chat w/the only drama being their opposite personalities - one is meekly quiet, the other profanity loud. You suffer through knowing there's got to be some drama at the end which there was, but it was dumb & inconclusive. Thank you fast forwarding.

No, just No
andyp3007 May 2019
I am not sure why this type of movie ever gets made. It has nothing to offer. I am not even going to summarize the plot, it really is not worth the effort. it's not a good film, the storyline is weak and anticipated and the acting is frightful.

How anyone can consider this movie is worth making in the first place is beyond me. How finance was gained shall remain one of the greatest enigmas of all time. Occasionally an independent film will pop up that is a work of genius...this is not it. No, just no.

Good Gone Wrong
tinahale-2510922 March 2019
Rumer must have taken acting lessons from her Mom. Emma did a really good job but she looked she was about to die from starvation. Plot was good but once again like so many movies now days just not thought through. Just a thrown together piece of trash.

Give it more than 15 minutes
jennylreid14 December 2020
I read bad reviews and watched it because it was free on youtube and I was curious to see Rumor as a lead actress. The botox duck lips are distracting at first, as is the very, very thin frame of the other lead actress, but once you get past that it's a good little indy flick.

Some reviewers clearly didn't watch the whole thing because they described the plot incorrectly, and there should be a law you can't review it unless you've watched it :). Or at the very least admit you didn't watch it.

This was a different kind of film
lamarof926 July 2019
This movie was well done. The two actresses were perfect! People watching this believe it's a regular movie with a car chase / things blowing up.... this is not that kind of movie. It's more personal...the writer did a great job.

Where do you we start?
bigrico-492071 January 2020
You don't, awful script, cliched, bad acting, especially by Rumor, you'd think because of her pedigree she would have inherited some acting chops, no, she didn't. Skip this one at ball costs.

Sooooooo bad!!!!!!!!
mangoismydog-3300519 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The acting was horrible, the flow of the conversation was horrible , every scene was so long and drawn out I'd find myself staring off.

I figured out the moment they got in the car and started talking that that wasn't the sister and this crazy girl had a crush on the brother Kyle. Ugh painful to watch, we did laugh a lot at how bad it was.

And I hate to judge someone's appearance but most of the film takes place in the car looking at the actor's profile, I couldn't stop staring at Rumous lips that had just too much filler, cringy.

Do NOT watch the trailer!
gordonbennett2676 March 2019
I made the mistake of watching the trailer which completely took away any wish to watch the movie as by the time the trailer had finished, the story had been drained of every twist and element of surprise. Someone needs to tell filmmakers that a trailer needs to trigger interest if they want people to go and watch the thing. My feeling is by showing a run-through of the movie people will have less interest not more. You would think that was commonsense but no doubt a lot of money has been spent on studies by marketing experts etc and likely it's been shown that trailers such as the one for this movie, actually increase the viewership. If that really is the case I have to admit to being totally baffled by it.

Ending confused me
ledwards-5154914 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It wasn't a terrible movie, but the last 2 minutes ruined it for me. I guess because I didn't get it. Was Kyle part of the plan? Is that why Jessica didn't answer the phone?

A complete waste of time
tounyelsayyad8 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The acting was OK until Jade's identity had been exposed, it started to be terrible and from both characters. The scene when the false Raven was talking to Kyle on the phone at the end of the film was absolutely foolish. Jessica looked too anorexic to watch and Raven's duck face was unbearable.

Not horrible and not great
laura_baumann15 November 2021
This was better than a lot of the huge block busters produced in Hollywood. I dont mind low budget films, as long as the acting is decent and it doesnt look like it was filmed in your parents garage, and this fits the bill on both. The acting wasnt great, but the 2 main female leads are decent, not great, but decent. I havent decided yet if Rumor Willis needs to find a career outside of acting. This is the 3rd movie I've seen her in, and she hasnt blown me away, but shes better than your average low budget actress. Shes getting to be outside the age of the 'hot young actress' category though, so she might need to move on to greener career pastures. If she didnt have Demi and Bruce as parents, she'd likely never get hired, even on a low budget film let alone a commercial, theres just way better talent out there. One thing i can say for sure is this...Ms. Willis needs to lay off the juvederm injections in her lips...with her dark oily looking hair, the profile shots literally looked like Daffy Duck, and thats not a good look, it's just over the top. Ive read that shes had a lot of work done to narrow her jaw, and on her nose, etc., likely because she didnt inherit her mother's chiseled looks, but all that succeeded in doing was to make her look like a distorted version of Demi, which is kinda sad. And finally, as for the ending of this movie...uummm, no comment!!

Sad, but Rumer
shazammatlast19 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film has hopeful moments as it begins. Rumer especially is appealing on screen. Her strong facial features capture the viewers' eyes. However, looks only last so long, the cliché goes, and such is the case with this film.

No amount of visual appeal can recover from a lack of plot development, of weak dialogue, and unfortunately of only semi-competent acting chops in its leads. Perhaps the lack of acting skills is tied inexorably to the weak writing of this film. Gaping holes and impossibilities and improbabilities line up and begin to overwhelm the sensibilities of what might have been a decently, arranged thriller. A few of these weaknesses stand out more than others.

For one, two strapping backwoods thugs are easily intimidated by a 5'6" skinny female wielding a weapon inches from a male's muscular arms. Why he can't flip the gun, disable the obviously weaker but threatening psycho girl and have his way annoys any reasonable viewer. Who cavalierly tosses a gun into a car's trunk after using it against two large men?

Also, a sad attempt at a climactic foot chase that should end the rival's life is boring and unfulfilled in any cinematic potential. Drugged but able to put admirable distance between herself and her attacker, the pursued girl then acts like a stumbling, bumbling weakling. After all this, why not just write an ending in which the pursued has escaped and now rests peacefully in a safe environment and then not detail how the psycho girl eluded capture, healed from her injuries, and still exists out there somewhere. The chronological leaps make meaningful comprehension seem like lazy writing on a plot board.

The film, ultimately, can be summed up in "jealous, psycho girl switches identities and creates havoc for her love interest's new girlfriend."

Already seen.

3.5 / 10.

The film started out interesting however it gets a bit boring and predictable. The end is very stupid. The main actress is not a bit sympathetic, neither beautiful nor charismatic.

Indy movies
moviesaremymission767 March 2019
First I'd like to share that I liked this movie. It takes me back to the days when folks like Ron Howard and others were starting out and making small independent movies like Grand Theft Auto or Fonda/Hopper's Easy Rider. Not all movies are or should be these huge budget, epic affairs. We need independent movies that tell stories and give actors and actresses opportunities to show what they can do. I thought Rumer Willis and Emma Dumont were wonderful in their respective parts. The plot was one I have seen before, but I still liked the journey because of these two young women's acting - watch their faces when they had dialogue and when they were in scene and there was no dialogue. I liked it and I think if those that didn't would just watch it again they would see subtle things that they missed the first time.

Everything is just rainbows and unicorns....and sunflowers
nogodnomasters17 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Upon the death of her mother, Raven (Rumer Willis) opts to leave Atlanta and go back to New York where her brother Kyle (Kelly Blatz) is a surgeon. Kyle sends his girlfriend Jessica (Emma Dumont) down to Atlanta so she can accompany his sister back to NY. They are an odd couple as Raven is rough and Jessica is mousey. Their relationship is not exacting blossoming and bonding as Raven does things that are not socially acceptable and downright illegal.

About an hour we get the twist. It wasn't specifically what I expected. The film may have been better had we had the twist a little earlier.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

I loved it!! I'm a big fan of thrillers, and this one didn't disappoint with its twist! I wasn't too familiar with the main characters before seeing this movie, but they're definitely on my radar now. Would recommend :-)
