Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.
Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.
The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.
In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.

Since her breakout Oscar-nominated role in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,” Rosamund Pike has been on the brink of returning to “the club.” She has proven herself to be one of the most consistently compelling actors working today with highly acclaimed lead performances in films such as “A Private War,” “Radioactive,” and “I Care A Lot.” This is along with the versatility of her work in television. Pike stars in the Amazon viewership juggernaut “The Wheel of Time” and, on the other side, won an Emmy for her quiet portrait of one half of a marriage-in-crisis in Stephen Frears’ short-form series, “State of the Union”.
For her film work, Pike currently boasts that Oscar bid for 2014’s “Gone Girl, a Golden Globe nomination for 2018’s “A Private War” and a Globe won on the comedy side for 2020’s “I Care A Lot.” Many believe if the voting for the BAFTA...

As Mae West once declared, “When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better.”
That might also be the case when it comes to British actress Rosamund Pike, who just won a Best Actress trophy in the musical or comedy category for the darkly comic “I Care a Lot.” Her win was a bit of a surprise since newcomer Maria Bakalova, who plays Sacha Baron Cohen’s daughter Tutar in the “Borat” sequel, was considered the favorite. But she was no match for Pike’s wicked-smart turn as a stylish hoaxer who legally becomes a guardian for seniors who supposedly can’t take care of themselves and end up seizing their assets for her own gain.
There are echoes of Pike’s performance as a sly and tricky femme fatale Amy in David Fincher’s twisted popcorn thriller “Gone Girl” as a wife...

Jimmy Page rarely let outsiders enter Led Zeppelin’s creative inner circle. The guitarist said he had a split personality in the band, and both kept nonmembers at bay. Partly out of necessity, the Led Zeppelin founder freely collaborated with many notable musicians after the band folded. One unlikely mashup was Page’s single with Diddy, “Come With Me.” The trained musician said the rapper knew nothing about music, but he still praised the rapper’s “fantastic imagination.”

Jimmy Page needed time to find the desire to join a band after Led Zeppelin folded. Drummer John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980 brought a sudden end to the band Page formed in 1968 and guided to worldwide success in the 1970s. The Firm, featuring Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, was that band. He was the unquestioned boss in Led Zeppelin, but Rodgers told Page to take a back seat on The Firm song “Radioactive.”
(l-r) Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers | Clayton Call/Redferns Paul Rodgers got ‘ballsy’ and told Jimmy Page to stand aside as he played the solo on 1 The Firm song
Page’s quiet career in right after Led Zeppelin folded — composing the Death Wish II soundtrack and piecing together the posthumous Led Zeppelin album Coda — received a boost in 1983. The guitarist was one of many classic rock icons who joined the Arms (Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis) benefit concerts.

The Simpsons has been commenting on pop culture for over 30 years. In that time, they have done several episodes revolving around movies. From the early ‘90s to today, the landscape of Hollywood has changed dramatically. Day 1 of the Indian edition of the multi-genre music festival Lollapalooza was a musical extravaganza in the truest sense. Wooing the audience on the first day were some of the most sought-after global and homegrown artistes; but the fest also saw Bollywood actors Hrithik Roshan, Sussanne Khan, Kajol, Rajkummar Rao, Patralekha and Huma Qureshi enjoying the music.
The international sounds that set the mood of the evening began with Chelsea Cutler and Japanese Breakfast bringing in fresh sounds. The power packed rock genre had fans grooving in the grand arena with the iconic Greta Van Fleet. The rock legends were a crowd favourite, their all-time classic ‘Highway Tune’, was sung in unison by the crowds and the acoustic rock was a fitting end to one of the most loved performances of the day.

If the crowd was not having enough fun at the ongoing first Indian edition of the multi-genre music festival Lollapalooza, Imagine Dragons brought out their most lethal weapon: their song ‘Bones’.
The song has become a rage, courtesy the countless ‘The Boys’ reels created by users on the Internet. The reels spell out the habits of men that come across as stereotypical, stupid and humorous. As the 1 hour performance of the pop-rock band approached its end, Dan Reynolds, the front man of Imagine Dragons, in his shirtless avatar walked up to the crowd and opened the song.
As he crooned the lyrics “My patience is waning, is this entertaining?”, the massive crowd at the venue went all at once, “I-i-i got this feeling, yeah, you know Where I’m losing all control ‘Cause there’s magic in my bones.”

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds was so consumed by the intoxicating vibe at the Lollapaloza India on Saturday that he went shirtless during his performance. The pop-rock band which is known for hits such as ‘Radioactive’, ‘Thunder’, ‘Believer’ among several others, was in Mumbai on Saturday performing at the maiden run of the multi-genre music festival Lollapaloza.
Just before band’s performance of ‘Whatever It Takes’, Reynolds took off his t-shirt. To be honest, the biting humidity of India’s financial capital also added to the gesture.
Reynolds returned with more energy, this time carrying the impact of Tsunami as he drowned the packed crowd with most loved songs of the band one after the other.

‘The Voice’ season 22 finale spotlight: Omar Jose Cardona hopes to make history for Team John Legend
When looking at the final five artists going into “The Voice” season 22 finale on Monday and Tuesday night, Omar Jose Cardona is on his back foot against four artists that earned more public votes than he did in the semi-finals. After the top 8 live show, Omar fell into the bottom half of the public vote and had to sing for the Instant Save. For that reason, he enters finale night as the long-shot to win with his eyes set on making series history as the first artist to win after being saved in the semis. Let’s look at his journey to the finals.

Is the decade-long “The Voice” Instant Save curse about to be broken? If John Legend‘s Florida singer Omar Jose Cardona ends up winning Season 22 during the Tuesday, December 13 finale, he’ll make history as the first artist to prevail who was previously saved by social media users. Since the creation of the Instant Save twist in Season 6, none of its recipients have ever gone on to win “The Voice.” Britton Buchanan (Season 14) and Toneisha Harris (Season 18) came closest by each placing second behind their winners, but all of the other times the saved artist finished near the bottom of their respective finales.

Say what you will about Imagine Dragons, but they don’t do things halfway. Since breaking through in the early 2010s with singles like the monster stomp “Radioactive” and the neo-power-ballad “Demons,” the Las Vegas band has been big in every sense — its success, its sound, its ambition. So it makes sense that their latest album, the 18-track opus Mercury — Act 2, is actually the second half of a double album, finishing off what last year’s sprawling Mercury — Act 1 started.

At this year’s Golden Globe Awards, Rosamund Pike pulled off a surprise win for Best Comedy/Musical Actress for her performance in “I Care a Lot” as a court-appointed guardian for the elderly who’s actually seizing their assets for herself. She was second place in our odds while most of our Experts were predicting Maria Bakalova to come out victorious for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” With Pike succeeding there contrary to our expectations, could she be a dark horse for a Best Actress Oscar nomination next?
According to the combined odds of Gold Derby users, the five expected to receive a Best Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars are currently Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”), Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), and Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holliday”), with Mulligan favored to win as of this writing.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pieces, including last year’s winner “Little Women.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 71 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2019 winner “Black Panther,” and recent champs “Alice in Wonderland...

Rosamund Pike has assumed guardianship of the Best Actress Golden Globe for Motion Picture, Comedy or Drama, for the ruthlessly hilarious I Care A Lot.
“I bet I look like I care a lot. And I do, I care a lot,” said a clearly thrilled Pike.
It was tough field that included newcomer Maria Bakalova who was a breakout hit in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. In her acceptance speech, Pike gave a shoutout to fellow nominees, especially Bakalova. “In my film I had to swim up from a sinking car. I think I would have rather had to do that than be in a room alone with Rudy Guiliani.” (We have Bakalova’s Tutar from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm to thank for forcing Rudy Giuliani to publicly defend some awkward hand motions as tucking in his shirt.)

Actress Rosamund Pike has warned we are “losing our grip on what we really look like” as she revealed her breasts and eyes have been doctored for movie promotions:
The star of "Gone Girl", "I Care a Lot" and revealing pictorials for various lifestyle and fashion magazines, said her breasts were 'augmented' for the "Johnny English Reborn" (2011) movie poster and in 2019 her eyes were changed to brown in promotional material for the 'Marie Curie' feature "Radioactive".
"In the poster for the character shot in 'Johnny English Reborn', I've got a very impressive chest — which I don't have," she said.
"And for 'Radioactive', strangely, they made my eyes brown, which I still don’t quite know why."
Pike said the whole thing was "odd" and it made her wonder if people always know when their image has been altered.

Rosamund Pike is currently enjoying a global audience with the Netflix hit “I Care a Lot,” in which she stars as a shady legal guardian who drains the bank accounts of her elderly wards. Recent press has afforded her the opportunity to look back at her career as an Oscar nominee for “Gone Girl,” and more, including a role in the 2011 action comedy “Johnny English Reborn.” Speaking virtually on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Pike took the chance to address an issue she’s hinted at before, which is her body being altered and photoshopped for the poster of that movie.
“For the poster for Johnny English [Reborn], my breasts were augmented,” she said. “In the poster for the character shot, I have got a very impressive chest, which I don’t have.”

A Guide to Avoiding #OscarsSoWhite: Instructions for Academy Voters Before Filling Out Their Ballots
⊗ Film is supposed to be inclusive. But if you can’t see yourself on-screen, do you feel as if you even exist? One-third of our lives is spent at work, and the artists who express their creativity through cinema deserve to have their work seen, and not just because of the color of their skin or their gender but because when you are exposed to an experience different from your own, your creativity grows. Take a moment to review this list of eligible films, putting a check mark on the ones you have seen from this year. Ideally, that will leave you with a clearer picture of how you are contributing to cinema’s evolution with your votes.
Your goal should be to watch all of these films, but let’s be realistic. Try seeing at least 60% of them. All meet the Academy’s diversity requirements — in front of or...

Only scripts written under the WGA guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the Writers Guild of America Awards. This limited eligibility means that these precursor prizes, which reveals its roster for the 2021 WGA Awards on February 16, are not the most reliable barometer of the eventual Oscar nominees and winners. Indeed, in the past 11 years only 73 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 110 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Mank” and “Minari” and the adapted screenplays for “The Father,” “The Life Ahead” and “Nomadland.”
Other original scripts that aren’t eligible include those for “Ammonite,” “The Assistant,” “Farewell Amor,” “Herself,” “Ordinary Love,” “Supernova” and “The Climb.”

Two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Rosamund Pike is back in contention this year for two more nominations. She contends in the Best Film Drama Actress category for the previously-released biopic “Radioactive,” in which she portrays double Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie, as well as in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress as the antihero protagonist of the upcoming Netflix release “I Care a Lot.”
In her exclusive interview with Gold Derby about the latter film (watch the video above), she terms the life-or-death thriller “a dark comedy,” noting that adopting an “ironic and satirical” tone for this film was its “best bet at getting an audience and getting awareness for this subject matter” of elder abuse. There’s always been magic in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “The Secret Garden,” a classic children’s story that, for all its harsh lessons about the nature of the world, relies on some pretty strange twists of fate to deliver its story. We’re talking, of course, about the robin redbreast, a cheery, chattering little bird responsible for one of the story’s biggest revelations. While Burnett’s 1911 novel never shied from the rough stuff — like most of her work, the book is concerned with orphans and illness — it used real-world pains to make its pleasures richer. And still, even it relied on a plucky robin to guide its heroine, the sassy Mary Lennox, to a literal key that opens the titular Secret Garden.
Yes, magic is part of Burnett’s world, but the story’s latest big-screen adaptation stretches that concept to strange ends, and not all of them benefit the film.

Biopics are tricky. Inasmuch as making them are good bets for filmmakers to get awards consideration, they are also prone to falling to overused clichés. One overworn formula persistently plagues this genre: the all-encompassing chronicle of the major events in a real person’s life. Such is the case with Marjane Satrapi’s Radioactive, an unabashed ode to the legacy of Marie Curie and her contributions to science, that's now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.
The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.
Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

The Science of Costume Design: Consolata Boyle on Crafting Looks for Marie Curie Movie ‘Radioactive’
Consolata Boyle is no stranger to dressing actors as famous women. The Emmy-winning and three-time Oscar-nominated costume designer has helped Judi Dench become Queen Victoria (“Victoria and Abdul”), unlocked Margaret Thatcher for Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”) and opened the wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II for Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). Now she takes on scientific royalty by channeling the world of Marie Curie for Rosamund Pike in “Radioactive,” which Amazon Studios begins streaming July 24.
The film follows Marie from her days as pioneering young scientist and Polish immigrant Marie Sklodowska in Paris, circa 1890s, and traces her steps as she meets Pierre Curie (Sam Riley of “Maleficent”), charting their discovery of the chemical elements polonium and radium and, later, the process of radioactivity.
Working with “Persepolis” director Marjane Satrapi, Boyle was pleased to discover that there were many existing visual references concerning Curie that she could call on, including her family.

Amazon Studios brings the story of Marie Curie to the screen with Radioactive starring Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike as the pioneering scientist.
Directed by Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and written by Jack Thorne, Radioactive is based on the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss. The film adaptation follows Curie’s life and the legacy of scientific breakthroughs. At the same time, the story tells the darker consequences that came about after her amazing work.
Curie married fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) who went on to raise two daughters and change the face of science forever by jointly winning the Nobel for the discovery of radium in 1903. After the death of her husband, Curie continues her research and invites scandal when she has an affair with another prominent scientist, Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard). However, it is Marie’s commitment to science which prevails,...

Director Marjane Satrapi’s “Radioactive” starts by trotting out an old biopic staple: a famous person approaching death and remembering life in a series of beautifully lit flashbacks. But by the time the film ends almost two hours later, Satrapi has pretty much abandoned the premise she started with, because the “memories” of Marie Curie have come to include flashbacks nestled inside other flashbacks, memories of events that Curie didn’t see and trips into a future that took place decades after her death.
In a way, demolishing your own premise as the movie goes on makes for a more adventurous and interesting trip than a typical biopic, but “Radioactive” is a curious beast from the director best known for her graphic novel “Persepolis,” and the Oscar-nominated film adaptation she directed with Vincent Paronnaud. Its boldest strokes also seem to be its most random ones, and its default mode is a certain melodrama and overstatement,...

Banish the dull images of test tubes and musty lecture halls when considering Radioactive (available on Amazon Prime starting July 24th). The biopic traces the career trajectory of Madame Marie Curie (a magnificent Rosamund Pike), the Polish immigrant born Maria Salomea Skłodowska who became the first person — and the only woman — to win two Nobel prizes. She shared the first in 1903, for discovering radium and polonium (named after her native country), with her French husband and fellow physicist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley). And the historical drama would be a dutiful thing,...

With Radioactive making its way to DVD we marked the occasion by speaking to one of its supporting stars, Sian Brookes. We discussed with her the joy in collaborating with Rosamund Pike, and under the direction of Marjane Satrapi.
Brookes plays Marie Curie’s sister Bronislawa, and we asked if there was much out there for her to use as a reference point. She also talks about the fun learning about specific eras in time, and highlighting the educational aspect of her profession. Given the timing of our chat, we also asked the affable actress about her time spent in lockdown, and whether she’s been able to keep creative (or just enjoy being with her family). Finally we spoke about Body of Water, a fascinating feature film we can’t wait to see, as she discusses her complex role in that interesting drama.

“Radioactive” isn’t your everyday biopic, and that’s just how star Rosamund Pike likes it. Director Marjane Satrapi’s Marie Curie biopic doesn’t just avoid the usual tropes of the genre, but goes one step further, injecting the story of the pioneering scientist with biting nods to how her work in the world of radiation impacted the world for decades to come. Tucked alongside scenes of personal tragedy and professional triumphs, Satrapi’s film intersperses footage of Chernobyl, Hiroshima, and other world events steeped (for better and certainly for worse) because of Curie’s work. For Pike, a film about the implications of Curie’s work and the greater cost of it could not come at a better time.

Marie Curie’s barrier-breaking work as a physicist and chemist has inspired countless movies, plays and books over the years. But Marjane Satrapi, the director of “Radioactive,” a new film about Curie’s life and career, wasn’t interested in telling a conventional story of birth-to-death hagiography.
Satrapi, Oscar nominated for her 2007 animated film “Persepolis,” has made a movie that’s equally engaged with the consequences of Curie’s pioneering work in isolating radioactive isotopes and her discovery of polonium and radium. “Radioactive” doesn’t just show the way in which these scientific advances helped doctors develop more effective treatments for cancer; it also dramatizes their role in unleashing destructive forces such as the atomic bomb.
Would you describe “Radioactive” as a biopic?
I don’t think it’s a biopic. That would be [saying] we’re telling her story from beginning to end. It’s as much a biopic of...

You can’t tell the story of Marie Curie’s genius without also touching upon the complex ramifications of the scientific work she accomplished. As her husband and research partner Pierre says in a dream at the tail-end of Marjane Satrapi’s cinematic adaptation of Lauren Redniss’ graphic novel Radioactive, “You can only throw the stone in the water, not control its ripples.” Her stone was the discovery of two new elements (polonium and radium) and the concept of radioactivity that so intrinsically connects them together. And while some of the resulting ripples that formed were game-changing advances in mankind’s evolutionary trajectory towards the future (nuclear energy and cancer treatments), others fed into our species’ lust for power and destruction (the atomic bomb). Both roads are crucially important to her legacy.
