Pretty solid jokefest with the exception of one person
brchthethird8 September 2016
I've watched a bunch of these roasts, and for the most part they're funny. Certain people are better than others and the non-comics they bring on are usually a mixed bag, but I laugh enough for me to enjoy it. I'm not particularly familiar with Rob Lowe's life or body of work, though. Literally the only reason I bought this was because I heard/read that Ann Coulter got roasted almost as bad as the man of the hour. In that respect this did not disappoint. Beyond that, I found it mostly on-par with what I've previously seen of Comedy Central's roasts. People I found the most funny were Jimmy Carr and roastmaster Jeff Ross. Unexpected MVP goes to Peyton Manning who, despite not being a comedian, delivered some pretty good jokes (probably none of which were written by him). As can be expected Ann Coulter's turn behind the mic did not go so well, but I wasn't really anticipating anything great from her to begin with. I literally have no idea why she was there other than for people to poke fun at her (which, admittedly, was worth it). Overall, the special provided me with a nice 80-minute diversion, even if the asking price of $6.99 was a bit much.

Warning: Spoilers
I gotta tell ya: I was laughing most of the time. That dude from SNL, you know the ugly one who was on last year, he's like the Millennials Gilbert Godfrey. He's so annoying I can't stop laughing at him. That gene must skip a generation or something, because we have nothing like that.

The best race joke of the evening was by Ann Coulter, even if no one laughed at it. I fed it into the old comedy computer, along with all the other jokes, and it scored the highest in that category. Anyone who didn't laugh at it must be a stupid brain dead liberal. Do they even know that this very program launched the Trump presidency? This paragraph has been approved by comedy computer.

Peyton Manning memorized his lines like they were offensive plays, but delivered them worse that Cooper. Rob Riggle stuck to the formula "Make observation then repeat briefly and loudly" like a Marine sticking to a terrain map. David Spade sounds better than he has since Hollywood Minute, and we all hope he will stop crying all the time about his dead fat friend and just be funny again. Jimmy Car didn't laugh enough (his laugh makes me laugh), and Ralph Macchio talked way too much. Seriously, just be Danielson, or however the heck you spell that in New Jersey. I find Nikki Glaser unattractive, and I therefor do not remember anything she said.

The standout of the evening, however, was Jewel. I've always hated Jewel. I saw her one time back in New Jersey, while I was working the Mrs. Fields cookie franchise at the Arts' Center. She droned on and on about some kid who wasn't allowed to watch The Jeffersons or some crap. I nearly puked in the cookie dough! The voice of the butthurt generation, always whining. But she was pretty awesome on this roast; really laced into Rob Lowe for all the things we all hate about Rob Lowe. Very visceral. Seriously, watch it just for Jewel. What a gem.

Worst roast ever
zathan-3284815 May 2021
Without any favourite in american politics the comments aganinst Ann Coulter was not suitable in a roast. Aroast is supposed to be nasty and funny. Ann Coulter was clearly abused and the show should not have included here. The roast is about people that make fun of people they love & respect. Here it was just hate... How does hate fit into a roast? And you call it comedy? David Spade and Ralph Macchio mostly did good, but other than that it was very dissapointing.

Trailer swift?

Ouch, this was a particularly mean roast. I guess they didn't have enough material on Lowe himself and just spent the night taking shots at each other. The funniest part was the look on the liberal crowd's faces when ann was speaking. Hollywood has no business in politics; one is for entertainment and the other should be serious. This was hard to watch

Disgusting & Degrading
gwoodward-8099717 August 2019
It makes my heart ache to see people celebrate such horrid spectacles and call it entertainment. When Don Rickles invented this form of comedy he did it with a sense of fun and respect. He loved the those he lampooned and knew he was one of them. But now these Hollywood Elites who lecture us on empathy and decency, call us bigots and immoral, slander each other with unparalleled brutality. Each trying to eclipse the other in level of hostility and hurtfulness. They have no soul. Ralph, Ann, and Payton were obviously out of their element. I guess now we know why Jewel recently divorced. And to think I used to enjoy her music.

really bad

Jaysus that was awful. I've sat through some pretty bad comedy before, on screen and in person, just to find the few nuggets of gold scattered throughout it, something to laugh along with. There was nothing here. Not a thing.

Time to rethink the direction you're going in Amy, unless you want to only cater for a tiny minority of people who both agree with you and enjoy seeing these things mocked. And that number is getting smaller every year.

A non-political observation
michelQDimples28 February 2024
I love these roasts. This one is, if I should be fair, funny at times. Some roasters really hit it hard.

However, here are my problems with this roast:

1. This isn't exactly a roast if all the jokes jabbed at the roastee is just "how handsome" he looks(sucking up much), him being a terrible actor yet still have landed tons of acting jobs, despite having some eventually canceled(more arse-kissing in the disguise of a roast, landing jobs=money/fame, clearly what these people on the show mostly care about), Rob's womanizing(he got away with it, the roasters mocked him for it, but in a "you nailed them, you pig" kinda salute).

2. I don't know who the host is. Same could be said about pretty much everyone on the dais. But David Spade isn't one of the worst hosts this series has to suffer through. Compared to other hosts, he's surprisingly unpleasant: egotistic, so much so that he seemed offended/disinterested in what is being said about him or pretty much everyone else.

I mean, Joseph Levitt wasn't a funny host, but you could see he was trying hard.

3. Jeffery Ross. I'd always liked him as a roaster until this episode. I've seen him pull off some crazy stunts playing hideous dressing-up. Charlie Sheen one was kinda bad taste too. But this one is purely disgusting. Granted it's for laughs, but him dressing up like a bloated blueberry while handling sleazy lingering girl posed in a degrading manner is murdering my eyes.

4. I don't know who Ann Coulter is. And I had no political agenda watching this roast. But couple of minutes in, it became plain obvious that everyone was ganging up on her in such a mean-spirited, and malicious way, that is far beyond the realm of a good-humored roast.

During Nikki's & Ross's roast of Ann, the latter could be seen shivering. The woman seemed mortified. I don't know what Ann's done exactly, but comparing someone you don't like or hate to Hitler is a bit of a cheap shot, isn't it? Unless Ann really has something that evil, she didn't deserve a whole evening of sheer abuse. What I did notice, is that Ann seems to have gathered hate for being a Trump supporter. But wait a minute. Trump was a roastee just few years back. He got away with it with barely a scratch( they went for his hair, his money/power/women, being a nepo-baby..hardly hurt..). No one attacked his political leanings. They praised him as "The king of NY". Where's the inconsistency?

The other female roasters: Jewel, Nikki, were extremely harsh to Ann. Jewel skipped the majority of the roasters but spent a huge chunk of her stage time ripping Ann a new one.

I know Ross interacted with other roasters normally during roast. But in this case, he was clearly enjoying Ann's painful frozen face by looking back at her after several viscous attacks.

And for the first time in roast history had a roaster got genuinely aggressive after hearing a joke about themselves and started cursing out loud, PETE DAVIDSON. Class act all the way.

When some of them called Ann a C-word during a roast though, it didn't feel like a joke. They really meant it. And Jimmy Carr actually told her to "kill herself".

It made me feel like watching a bullying happening at school, and everyone cheering on for more more moooore blood.

This farce is a rat race among these self-grandiose crowd-pleasing hatred-filled whatever trying to get popular by crapping on the unpopular. Anytime anyone said anything nasty about Ann, they would surely generate applause.

The bottom line is, "you only roast the one you love", but there's no love for Ann that night. Why even invite her in the first place?

And when it was Ann's turn to roast, some of the jokes she got booed or complete deadpan silence for, if said by another roaster would probably get some laughs. Funny how people can be so two-faced. It's like starring at hypocrisy right in the face.

One last little thing, so all of a sudden those who advocate treating women with respect could just gang up on one woman as long as they could precariously brand her a Hitler?

Have we really come to this?

P. S. Couldn't care less if this down down-voted if this is the society that we are living in now.
