Challenging and well written

As a debut feature this film really stands out, it is effective and quite emotionally striking. The acting is solid throughout, with a couple of memorable performances and characters. The dialogue flows naturally and for such a gritty and unsettling theme there are plenty of welcome laugh out loud moments, which come as a genuine surprise. No spoilers, but it certainly doesn't progress in the way I expected it to and after the end credits it lingers with you for quite some time. It is a film that definitely has to be watched, it is complex, compelling and certainly dark. As to be expected in such a low budget feature, there are some holes, but the good vastly outweighs the weak, like a breath of disturbing fresh air.

Difficult yet rewarding.

The subject matter of The Chain is difficult and disturbing. But, in the present era it is a story that must be told. The film deals with this through intelligent writing that is, on the whole, excellently delivered by the cast of mostly unknown actors. The story is gripping, with a number of twists and turns helping to build the tension. Well-timed dark humour provides welcome relief from some of the more challenging scenes - though the film is careful never to stray into anything gratuitous.

The low budget nature of this feature is apparent in some scenes and the viewer should not expect anything overly finessed. However, this debut delivered over and above my expectations and rewards the viewer with an enthralling experience.
