S1.21: Sonnet #104: Doesn't really work but nice idea
bob the moo11 December 2016
This sonnet is one of love developing over time – and the reference to it being three years suggests that it must be the first flushes of love rather than later in the relationship. As such this film plays out the dating relationship of a couple, from their first meeting on the ferry landing, through other small events until the current moment where they are together at the same landing.

I like the idea but the delivery doesn't always work. The visual presentation includes very literal images, backwards playing shots, and far too many obvious ones of 'playful relationship montage 101'. The performances don't help this, as they mostly just act coy, or make big eyes at one another; there isn't a sense of something more than superficial here. Aside from the odd 'literal' moments, the sonnet delivery seems detached from the images due to the sound and the lack of real engagement in the delivery. It was a decent idea for sonnet 104, but the delivery doesn't really make it work.
