Back to the roots

I don't understand some of the bad reviews of this episode. While I'll be the first one to admit that season 13 wasn't really that funny and I was worried that the same level of mediocracy from season 13 will spill into season 14. However, I couldn't have been more wrong! So far, season 14 is amazing! It has that same familiar "feel" of the gang from earlier seasons. As far as this episode goes, I think it was even funnier than the first one. They way they tackle current hot subjects and make fun of everyone, while being hypocritical is what this gang is about. The jokes were excellent, I laughed throughout the entire episode! go watch it!

This is what I miss from Always Sunny
elevatormaniacgames3 October 2019
Season 13 of It's Always Sunny disappointed me. Didn't feel like how it was from it's golden years. Even the characters looked way different then they did from the previous season, season 12, but that wasn't my main issue. My main issue was that it was kind of boring, which was unlike Sunny. However, Season 14 went off in a better start. And this episode is one of those. This episode brings that feeling from the glory days in so many ways. It's been awhile since I genuinely laughed at an Always Sunny episode. This one made me laugh more than I used to in the past few seasons. However, it doesn't fully feel like how it was, but it's way better than the best season 13 episode. I hope that they keep up this trend for future Season 14 episodes. I recommend watching this episode.

The gang finally was able to get Dolph Lundgren
logan-323-51606118 December 2023
It's always sunny has been referencing Dolph Lundgren for many seasons now. It's great to see that their budget and popularity has now afforded them the ability to actually hire Dolph to show real clips of Thundergun. I know this must've been a Highwater Mark for the creators, and as a fan I'm also equally excited. This episode was great, I would've given it at seven but it gained an extra point for its great social commentary on the PC culture that's happening right now. For a moment, I thought it's always sunny was becoming PC itself. But luckily, that is not the case and one of my favorite shows can continue without corruption. This episode is great and a true return to form.

Back to basics
chased-259894 October 2019
As a person who has seen every epsiode of sunny multiple times this episode has the classic sunny feel throughout. I wasnt a huge fan of last season and even the first episode of this season for me missed the mark this one gets the gang back on track.

From Charlie never understanding what is going on, Frank reminiscing about the "good old days", and Dee having horrible timing this episode has the classic sunny feel.

Any show that has been on for 14 seasons is just gonna feel like they are doing the same stuff over and over but even though this episode tackles issues they have in the past it doesnt have the feel of rebooted BS but staying true to what they are and giving the fans what they want as this episode so keenly points out

"Give dong or give me death."
alencar_darwin12 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yes! Bloody PG-13. This episode is more contemporary Sunny; almost like a panel, a discussion on some public forum; they sit around and talk and talk; very minimalistic (in the way that Bergman films are).

They are "selected" as a focus group for a new film. They watch the early print of (no less) the new Thunder Gun instalment and think it sucks. (Maybe their attitude, their rejection of the changes done by the studio on the films they love is a reflection of the same disposition in some Sunny fans, I don't know; one shouldn't read too much into it, I guess). They want the old-school Thunder Gun. I love how they find the film confusing; they can't even understand a very simple-minded and in-your-face visual representation in the film's end: the old main character passing a literal torch to his son (the franchise's new lead character). Charlie says: He has a son?!.

"Give dong or give me death", says Dennis. The gang is mad that the main character didn't show his penis in the new film. Their outrage reach a height upon discovering that the film will be released with a PG-13 rating. Communist, liberal Hollywood is ruining everything again. The woman moderator is also enraged, however, by the gang's stupidity.

Oh, piracy. The moderator mentions piracy and go so far as to say that's the main motive for the changes in the film and in the general industry, even though we know that the mainstream junk put out by Hollywood breaks records in the box office (and if they don't want people streaming or downloading shaky copies of their high budget garbage in sleazy sites filled with weird ads than just provide a legitimate form of streaming at the same time it's in the cinema and people will pay and watch).

The end of this episode is priceless. A middle finger to Hollywood.

This ep didn't do it for me, long time sunny fan but this lacked that vibe and felt forced. Mac is loosing his appeal and charlie is almost ....dare i say it...normal?! *dramatic bell*

Thunder Gun 4
bobcobb3013 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
While there were certainly some funny lines this show has just run out of ideas at this point. We've had episodes with the gang lamenting PC culture before, but they were done better than this.

Definitely funny, but the show is just not what it once was.

One of the Better Sunnys in a Long Time
cardswschamps14 October 2019
The entire show was terrific. There was some laugh out loud moments with is rare for modern situation comedies. It will make many critics top 10 or 15 episodes of the series imho.

Honest review
alexmacrorie-331-6107004 October 2019
Honestly, I'm a huge IASIP fan but they are missing huge this season so far. I have maybe chuckled once or twice the first two episodes. With these other big ratings coming in, I feel like it's necessary to bring it back down because it simply isn't good right now and they need to right the ship or it's going into tanksville. I sincerely hope they figure it out, or they're going to get cancelled when their next contract is up.

yeah sunny is great again!
michal-kriboshey6 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As a huge fan of Sunny, to the point of a cult like behavior to the show (me and my husband watch at least three episodes almost every evning), I'm so excited to see that the gang is back to their roots of being their woundrefly crass, obscene and genuinely hilarious anti PC Coulter selves, while still maintaining the same level of smart satire by referencing to themselves or older plotlines as they always did. Me and my husband laughed through the entire episode so hard, and I loved that this episod's format felt a little like the episode "hero or hate crime" ( with the whole gang sitting around a table...) but also they added the scenes from the thunder gun movie, and they brought Dolf Lundgren! (I wish they would've given him a super power to smell crime though lol). I also completely identified with their comantries in this episode about the whole pg13 phenomenon and I loved their observation on the topic of Movie's piracy. Honestly I didn't like the last season, It felt tired and even preachy at times and I was afraid that this season will follow in its footsteps, but I'm so happy to see that the show is back on track again this season so far and still delivers new quotable phrases, continues to stay true to it self and thier fans.

can't wait for next week's episode!

They just keep getting better and better!
orgasmicshopper8 February 2020
I have watched all of their series (1-14), binge watched style. At first I thought, how is this show been running since 2005 but as with all programmes, the first and/or second series can be a bit, well below average. However the first episode was fantastic! Some of the rest of season was somewhat hit or miss to be honest. More miss than hit. However from season 2, I can easily see how it's been running for so long!

I would thoroughly recommend this programme if you like comedy which is similar in style to parks and recreation, trailer park boys, the office etc.

A Comprehensive Commentary on Current Movie Culture
sandybox20229 March 2024
What an episode.

It feels like they accumulated a lot of anger about the current movie/tv culture and let it all out in this one episode.

I have to admit, that it mirrors my opinion on that topic - so this might bias the rating.

However, this shows again how CLEVER its always sunny can be.

The whole message of this episode is summarized in a short monolog by Dennis - i think the first intelligent thing i heard in a while. Not to say the show isnt socially critical and usually each episode has its message. But this one came right out of frustration and you got a glimps behind the action.

All in all a comprehensive commentary on current film culture.

Also the first episode of IASIP that I HAD TO review on IMDB.

Just not funny anymore
ztgreen177021 October 2019
Not sure what has happened, but I think it's time to end this show. The crew just don't seem as into it as they used to. The jokes are recycled and stale and the plots have been uninspiring to say the least.

Straight white men can't have anything anymore.
StarsDie2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The show continues to beat the audience over the head with their message with very little nuance. They continue to spell it out using as many modern buzzwords as humanly possible. All of this is taking the place of what used to be jokes. It seems as if the writers start with the message first, and then try to make jokes out of it; whereas before they would write the jokes first and if they could weave a message in somehow they would. That isn't to say that they don't nail a few jokes here and there in this episode, just that their writing process is leading to far fewer of their jokes landing and is making much of the dialogue come off as forced rather than natural. This all has to do with the quality of their writers dipping; mixed with the fact that these writers just don't know the characters as well as the original writers do. So you now have forced hit and miss jokes and characters not acting like themselves. I think the show just got renewed for 4 more seasons solely on the back of everything they did up to season 12 because the quality of these past 2 seasons has dipped far beyond my tolerance level.
