Back in 2010, the video game industry was starting to enter a phase where developers (old and new alike) tried new platforms to test their creative freedom. Hideo Kojima was no different, and he took the PSP’s potential to actualize an experiment that would mean a lot of things.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was an entry that not only brought him some time while the team tested new things but also ‘accidentally‘ made for one of the most unique games to have come out on the little beast; the PlayStation Portable. There’s more to this story than we may have imagined.
Hideo Kojima’s Attempt at Bringing in a Younger Audience With a clever blend of stealth and gunplay, this game went above and beyond expectations.
In a tweet shared by Hideo Kojima recently, fans have learned the backstory of one of the most unique Metal Gear Solid games in history.

Dragon’s Dogma’s creative breakthrough—as a series, since much of what the sequel does was introduced in the 2012 original—is that it conceives of the RPG adventure not as a string of combat encounters or dialogue decisions, but as often arduous traveling through dangerous, unpredictable lands—with all the planning, consequences, and improvisation that entails. This angle is so daring and unusual that Dragon’s Dogma 2, which once again sees you set out as the chosen Arisen on a quest to slay the mighty Dragon (or at least it seems that simple at first), somehow feels unlike anything else that’s been released since the first game.
The loop of the game is in many ways similar to that of other action RPGs. Quests send you out into the wilderness to complete tasks and fight monsters before having you return to town to buy equipment and learn skills. This is a familiar rhythm,...

New leaks hint at Dragon’s Dogma 2 not being the only open-world game from Capcom for a while. After a recent info dump by industry insider Dusk Golem, Capcom’s upcoming projects seem to be following a pattern of innovation and evolution.
Known for its iconic franchises like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, the company seems to be delving into new territories while retaining the essence of these beloved series.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Might’ve Set a Precedent for Resident Evil 9
RE9 might follow the open-world formula of Dragon’s Dogma 2
Dusk Golem explains that Capcom tends to greenlight new initiatives in threes, often in close succession. This pattern has been observed in the past with games like Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry 5, which were all greenlit closely together to use the full extent of the (at the time) new Re Engine.

Capcom has announced today that Monster Hunter World has surpassed the 25 million global sales milestone.
World was the first title in the longstanding Monster Hunter series to have a simultaneous global launch. While the series garnered a fan following in Japan since its inception in 2004, it was 2018’s Monster Hunter World that brought the series, as its name would check out, massive worldwide appeal.
As shared by Capcom, Monster Hunter World now has the highest number of single-title sales among games from the Japanese company. However, if we had to go by series-wide numbers, it would be Resident Evil, and by a long shot, according to Statista‘s report. The Resident Evil series has a whooping 154 million titles sold across the series, with Monster Hunter sitting at 97 million currently.
Speaking of which, Monster Hunter could be on its way to catch up. The series has its next entry in the...

Beyond all the lore and theories that surround Elden Ring, there are a lot of stories and artwork that present themselves as a product of inspiration from The Lands Between. It’s not unusual to see a work of fan art and storytelling that finds its home in FromSoftware’s harsh universe.
However, every once in a while, there’s a piece of fiction that shakes up the source material in some way without messing with it. Yet, it uses this narrative to create newer stories of friendship and love. Such is the case with an upcoming novel that is based on the story of two co-workers who connect with each other.
The Tale of Two Individuals Who Share Their Love for Elden Ring It’s going to be a story worth falling for.
If there was a romanticized story of two die-hard fans of Elden Ring, this would probably be it.

There is only a month left till we finally see Dragon’s Dogma 2 arrive on our consoles or PCs, and now, thanks to a recent teaser from games director Hideaki Itsuno, there could be a major feature coming to the game that could change the future of the genre and potentially gaming itself.
For many gamers, this feature may not be as important as a well-balanced combat system, a detailed story, perfectly rendered characters, or other features, but for many gamers, this is something that could completely change how a game acts and feels, and that is the frame rate at which the game can be played.

After Final Fantasy VII Remake shattered almost every expectation of what a remake could be, it feels like a deliberate act of comfort that the first chapter of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is so very familiar: the flashback to Cloud’s last mission with Sephiroth.
It begins with a long truck ride, where we find a young, doe-eyed Cloud doing stretches ahead of helping his hometown of Nibelheim with its monster problem while his team leader, Sephiroth, watches on with detached amusement. The same niceties that resulted in a more detailed Midgar in Remake help paint an even more detailed one of the flashback scene in Rebirth compared to the original Final Fantasy VII. Walking into Nibelheim, Sephiroth is almost a warm, doting presence, genuinely curious about the idea of having a hometown to return to. Cloud himself gets to wander the city, including its alleyways full of stray cats,...

If you missed one of 2023’s more underrated horror movies, we’ve got great news: Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is heading to streaming next month.
Look for The Last Voyage of the Demeter to arrive on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 11, 2024.
Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), this latest Dracula movie leaves the comedy of Renfield behind for a classic, Hammer-style horror movie at sea. The film is an adaptation of a single passage from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, known as “The Captain’s Log,” which has never been adapted like this before.
The film is “based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London.

Since we last discussed the shocking early success of developer Pocketpair’s recently released Palworld, the game has gone on to achieve numbers you typically only see from new releases in gaming’s biggest Triple-a franchises.
Not only has Palworld sold over six million copies since its release (not counting those playing the game via Xbox Game Pass), but it attracted over 1.8 million concurrent Steam players over the weekend. For context, that is the second-highest recorded concurrent player count for any game in Steam history.
Yet, Palworld isn’t quite the darling of the industry that you’d think it would be given that it’s a historic success from a small studio. Instead, Palworld has become one of the most debated titles in recent memory. A growing contingent of gamers popularly led by longtime Pokémon are arguing that Palworld is nothing but a shameless rip-off. Some of them are...

Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" certainly has one of the most eclectic casts of any '90s blockbuster. On one hand, you have a variety of established actors. Then-beloved action hero Bruce Willis was the film's centerpiece, propped by British thespians like Gary Oldman and Ian Holm, both of whom had garnered recognition in major Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, you have a variety of unknown variables: Milla Jovovich, a young Russian model just getting her start on film; Chris Tucker, a hyperactive comedian slowly on the rise after "Friday," which also just so happened to feature "Fifth Element" co-star Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., an actor-turned-wrestler-turned-actor-again. Besson's call sheet of obscure talents goes on and on. However, it is exactly the director's ethno-galactically diverse, if often aesthetically disparate, vision for the film that makes the cast of "The Fifth Element" fit surprisingly well together.

Over the years, Milla Jovovich has made several films with her husband, writer/director Paul W. S. Anderson, including the films in the Resident Evil franchise. For several years, he’d been trying to make a movie out of the Monster Hunter video game — he’d actually worked on securing the rights to the film back in 2012. When the film went into production in 2018 after several false starts, Anderson asked his wife if she’d be interested in starring in the film. At first, she told us, she’d been a little hesitant, but once she read the script he’d prepared with her in mind, she changed her mind very quickly. Veteran international film executive Martin Moszkowicz will step down as chairman of the executive board of German mini-major Constantin Film after his current contract expires early next year. Deputy chairman Oliver Berben will take over the role.
Moszkowicz, who has overseen the production of the Resident Evil and Mortal Instruments franchises at Constantin will stay on as a producer with the Munich-based outfit after his contract as chairman runs out on Feb. 29, 2024. Moszkowicz has been part of Constantin’s management since 1990 and took over as chairman in 2014.

The company’s supervisory board has approved his request and has appointed Berben to be chairman of the executive board as of March 1, 2024. Additionally, Hanns Beese, the member of the board in charge of finance, has extended his contract.

If it ain’t broke, the saying goes, don’t fix it. That makes Square Enix’s job with the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth an interesting one. After all, the developer broke Final Fantasy VII on purpose with Remake and now it’s begun the daunting task of not just fixing it, but crafting new bespoke parts that make for a good fit with the original game.
Granted, Square has a lot more freedom to do so, thanks to a barn-burner of a canon-busting climax for Ffvii Remake, but if anything, that means that the job is even more precarious. I was able to play a demo of Ffvii Rebirth at a closed-door event, and having put a bit of time into it, it’s at least obvious that Square is up to the task and taking some big swings. Whether those swings will connect with the audience in...

The Game Awards 2023 panel has revealed the full list of nominees who will be eligible to win at this year’s show. While many of the nominees are relatively unsurprising, there are certainly a few games that did (and didn’t) get nominated that will get people talking.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Game Awards 2023’s nominees and voting process.
The Game Awards 2023: How Voting Works
According to the Game Awards website, Game Awards winners are determined by a “blended vote” that accounts for jury votes and fan votes. The jury votes account for 90% of the voting weight while the fan votes make up the remaining 10%.
Though an example of that formula is not provided, it’s basically best to think of the system like a 10-person voting jury. Nine of the jurors would represent voting individuals of the group, and the 10th person would...

While I’m glad that there’s been a recent boom in entertaining video game adaptations (like Peacock’s surprisingly fun Twisted Metal show), there has always been a curious discrepancy between games with impressive narratives that would benefit from the blockbuster treatment and games that are actually popular enough to warrant the investment of adapting them into other media.
This is why we often see more gameplay-driven titles reach the big screen (like Super Mario Bros and Resident Evil) before narrative-heavy franchises like Sanitarium or even Metal Gear Solid. It could be argued that this is a good thing, as there’s no point in adapting a story that already feels like a movie while you’re playing it, but it also means that filmmakers sometimes get free reign to do whatever they want in a picture so long as it generally ties into the larger world established by...

The eponymous ship in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is just as crucial to the story as its ill-fated crew and passengers. What begins as a routine charter carrying private cargo becomes a harrowing fight for survival as Dracula (Javier Botet) uses the isolated Demeter as feeding grounds.
Director André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) enlisted production designer Edward Thomas to bring the Demeter to life, imbuing the schooner with impressive scale and meticulous detail. Thomas is no stranger to epic-sized horror adventures; the production designer is responsible for the thrilling set pieces in Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Monster Hunter.

Video games are the new superheroes, in that every Hollywood studio seems to want their own film adaptation to cash in on the success and the acclaim of movies like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and shows like "Arcane" or "The Last of Us." Sure, while the so-called "video game curse" has finally been disproven, we still get huge flops like "Monster Hunter." Still, just like the colossal failure of "The Flash" is not deterring DC Studios from going full-steam ahead with adding even more millions to the budget of "Aquaman 2," the failure of some projects is not stopping Hollywood from catering to the biggest entertainment industry — gamers.
The latest video game movie is not a conventional one. "Gran Turismo" is not really adapting any lore from the games or even telling the meta story of how the rights were secured, à la "Tetris," but instead, it's a movie based on a true story,...

If you thought CinemaCon was the only game in town this Thursday, think again! The Hollywood Reporter says Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou are in talks to direct Street Fighter, Legendary’s adaptation of the classic fighting video game from Capcom.
Street Fighter is one of the most beloved fighting game franchises in history. The first game in the series, Street Fighter, hit arcades in 1987, followed by Street Fighter II in 1991. I was there, man. For both of them! I remember going to Nathan’s Famous restaurants to play the original, and it was a madhouse. People of all ages hooted and hollered around the Street Fighter cabinet as Ryu and Ken duked it out. There was something special about Street Fighter from the start, and the franchise grew with each iteration. I’ll never forget the first time I unleashed Blanka’s electric attack or Chun-Li’s Hundred Lightning Kicks.

The past several years have seen several buzzworthy horror films released — but none has been more controversial than the 2023 flick, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.
The slasher retelling of the beloved children’s stories made the rounds on social media well before it was released, drumming up significant fan interest. When the movie was released, it became a surprise hit. It prompted a sequel order and many positive responses from horror fans.
While many are already making plans to see the sequel, citizens of China shouldn’t expect to catch it in theaters. The country banned Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey for a rather interesting reason.

Legendary Entertainment has acquired film and television rights to the video game franchise “Street Fighter.” Any upcoming projects — including one feature film that’s already in the works — will be co-developed and produced in conjunction with video game distributor Capcom.
Since the franchise launched in 1987, Street Fighter has sold over 49 million units worldwide, becoming one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time. It also spawned other games, various spin-offs and crossovers featuring characters like Ryu, Ken, Chung-Li, Guile and M. Bison. Capcom is behind other popular games, such as “Resident Evil” and “Monster Hunter.”
Hollywood has yet to master a live-screen version of “Street Fighter,” though there have been several attempts. Universal’s 1994 action film “Street Fighter” — starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia — was a critical and commercial misfire, as was 20th Century Fox’s 2009 adaptation “Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li” with Kristin Kreuk.

There is not a more fearless action star on the planet than Tony Jaa. Ever since making his bone-bruising debut in the relentlessly entertaining "Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior," Jaa's presence in a movie means you're in for full-tilt martial arts combat that's as punishing to film as it is exhilarating to watch.
Jaa earned the most valued seal of approval in the action filmmaking community when Jackie Chan called him "the most well-rounded of all action stars." Alas, Jaa was unable to realize the dream of acting alongside his hero in "Rush Hour 3" (which is for the best given the ghastly quality of the film), but the indestructible Thai star continues to press ever forward. His star has dimmed in recent years (e.g. he took supporting roles in Paul W.S. Anderson's "Monster Hunter" and the sci-fi Dtv effort "Jiu Jitsu"), but when you cast Tony Jaa, you...

Whether it’s because of the hours we’ve lost in traffic or an unconscious desire to rebel against the unnatural rat race of modern life, there’s an undeniable catharsis in watching gigantic monsters obliterate a metropolitan area on the big screen. Don’t get me wrong, a real life Kaiju incident would probably be regarded with the same severity as a massive terrorist attack, but fictional casualties are a small price to pay for some monster movie fun.
That’s why it makes sense that video games have been trying to emulate these destructive thrills for decades now, with Kaiju having been present in interactive media ever since it was possible to animate a crude little radioactive dinosaur out of 8-bit pixels. And with modern audiences still hungry for giant monster mayhem, we thought that this might be a good time to look back on the evolution of Kaiju in video games.

[The following story contains spoilers from the film Tár.]
Well before Todd Field’s Tár opened in Thailand, I got my first review of the film from my friend, director Paul Spurrier. Paul had seen the film while in Los Angeles for the American Film Market.
“So we have here a mad genius conductor, who is kicked out of a major European orchestra after an act of violence, has rather ambiguous dealings with some young prodigies, ends up in Southeast Asia conducting a youth orchestra in a tawdry venue …,” he began.
“Oh!” I said, “You went to a screening of our film?” Because Paul was giving me the exact plot of our own film, The Maestro: A Symphony of Terror, a horror fantasy we made two years ago, which I wrote and starred in as the aforementioned “mad genius” conductor.
“Actually, no,” he said. “I just saw Tár.”
Since, I too have seen Tár and, as it turns out,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for “Tár.”
Todd Field’s “Tár” ends with disgraced conductor Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) conducting the score of “Monster Hunter,” a fantasy video game series, for a group of cosplayers in Southeast Asia. It’s a huge fall from grace from her previous post as head of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Countless theories exist on the internet about the character’s ending. Is she hallucinating? Is Tár herself a monster who has been hunted, as her downfall comes as a result of allegations of misconduct and abuse of power. Or is it something else?
Oscar-nominated and Ace Eddies nominated editor Monika Willi reveals a line that never made it into the film: “Tár never quits. Tár makes music across the globe, no matter the audience.” According to Willi, “This says to audiences she’s holding up, she’s standing upright and she doesn’t quit.

Wild Hearts is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 17 at 12:00 Am in your local time zone. Yes, that means that no time conversion math is required. When it’s 12:00 Am wherever you are, you’ll be able to play the digital version of Wild Hearts. Of course, you could always use the fabled New Zealand trick to play the game a little sooner in certain areas.
PC players technically get the game a bit earlier than that, though they do have to navigate a tricker release schedule for the privilege. That’s because the PC version of the game is utilizing a global rollout strategy rather than the universal release time method. In other words,...

This article contains Tár spoilers.
For the last 10 minutes of Todd Field’s Tár, an elusive yet beguiling character study about an elite musician’s fall from grace, the fate of Lydia Tár remains a mystery. We know that Lydia, as played with an erudite augustness by Cate Blanchett, has been exposed to be many things: a sexual predator, a manipulative employer, and a relentlessly selfish spouse. Even her name is an embellishment, with the disgraced Egot winner returning to her forgotten childhood home where her estranged brother calls her Linda. In this context, it isn’t a stretch to imagine the accent mark on her surname is similar affectation—a pretension that reveals a flattering self-regard and overbearing pretension.
But after her brother surmises she hasn’t the faintest idea about what her life really is—accusing her of not knowing “where the hell you came from or where...

The following contains spoilers for the endings of “Tár” and “Women Talking”
Few film endings this year were as funny or as ambiguous as the ending to Todd Field’s “Tár,” which saw the titular character (played by Cate Blanchett), “canceled” following revelations of improper relationships with younger women, working as a conductor for live performances of the “Monster Hunter” video game score. The unexpected ending is laugh-inducing, but since the film premiered to acclaim at the Venice International Film Festival, critics and fans have debated how the audience is supposed to interpret Tár’s final fate: as a final humiliation for her, a hint toward an eventual career resurrection for a monster, or a bittersweet happy ending showing she will always have music in her life.
Hildur Guðnadóttir, the composer behind the original compositions of Lydia Tár, leans into the latter camp. While at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday,...
