Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
The world of “Bridgerton” is no stranger to competition. Among London’s elite, wealthy debutantes and ambitious suitors vie for attention and supremacy on every level, from status and title to the very notion of a “diamond” — the best the season has to offer. What better way to celebrate the eagerly awaited Season 3 (Part 1 now streaming and Part 2 due June 13) than by revisiting past and previous diamonds?
Now that there are fully 20 of them out in the world, we decided to rank the best “Bridgerton” episodes, and to not overly favor any one season over another. A show doesn’t become an overnight popular horny period sensation without some certified bangers (pun intended), so we revisited Seasons 1 and 2 along with Season 3 – Part 1 to pull the greatest hits.

In 1993, Akira Kurosawa’s final feature, “Madadayo,” was released. Following this, he would leave the director’s chair entirely after he suffered an injury to his spine, forcing him to spend the final years of his life in a wheelchair. After decades of filmmaking, his career as a director had come to an end. Yet, he wasn’t done artistically speaking, remaining active as a screenwriter. Unfortunately, things would worsen for him in the following years as his health gradually declined, further restricting him from being artistically creative. On September 6th, 1998, Akira Kurosawa died due to a stroke. The death of the renowned filmmaker was met with international mourning. However, his legacy would continue to live on thanks to overwhelming admiration from audiences for his filmography and numerous tributes. On top of this, many who worked alongside the beloved auteur sought to honor him. One such movie...

An aspiring artist gets far more (very bloody) inspiration that he needs in the new Character trailer. Directed by Nagai Akira, whose previous film was the romantic drama After the Rain (2018), the crime/horror thriller from Japan is described thusly on IMDb: "A kind man aspires to become a comic creator, but villains and evil deeds do not come easily to him. Things take a surprise turn when he comes across a family who were described as idealized that are no more." As I noted above, the trailer, which looks very slickly made and propulsive, is also very bloody, so it is likely Nsfw (not safe for work), unless you work at a slaughterhouse. More information is available at the Japanese-language official site. Character is...

“After the Rain” is the second part of a documentary trilogy by Fan Jian about the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province from 2008. In it, the director follows the lives of two couples, Sheng and Mei, and Ying and Ping, who have lost their daughters in the earthquake.
“After the Rain” is screening at the San Diego Asian Film Festival
The opening scenes of Fan Jian’s documentary focus briefly on the rebuilding of the city after the catastrophic event of May 12. We can hear the sound of construction in the background while Sheng and Mei walk through the destroyed city with a bag of their daughter’s clothes. Shots of them throwing the clothes in the river are intercut with the bustling construction around them.
But rebuilding people’s lives, especially that of those who have lost a child, is much more complicated. Though the government lifts the terrible one...

Netflix giveth and Netflix taketh away. Everyone who uses streaming services will know that as rights deals expire, movies come and go from various platforms. However, May looks to be an especially tough month for Netflix, with a lot of amazing films departing. This includes classics like Goodfellas, The Dirty Dozen, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Blade Runner: The Final Cut.
But surely the most missed will be Frank Darabont’s beloved The Shawshank Redemption. The pic is comfortably at the top of the IMDb Top 250 and its story of being confined and dreaming of escape has to appeal to viewers stuck inside due to Coronavirus lockdown.
Here’s the full list of what’s leaving:
A Cinderella Story (2004)
A Little Princess (1995)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
