Look At What I Can Do!

Brightly painted bits of wood move back and forth, and stack up, horizontally and vertically in this brief animated short by Slavko Vorkapich.

Vorkapich was born in what is now Serbia, but moved to the United States. There he became an expert in montage, the art of cutting and editing short images, often abstract ones, to illustrate a point to a movie audience. Most of his better known work was done for Paramount, but he worked with independent producers, and did experimental tests like this. Often they were unreleased, or released on such an irregular schedule that two or three dates are cited. This one, for example, is thought by the IMDb to have been released in 1940, while other sources said it happened a decade later.
