While working the annual round-up, Charlie Russell (Fess Parker), the night wrangler, is being relieved by greenhorn 'Fast Gun Tracy Blue' (Paul Carr). From atop the hill, they see that the stagecoach on the road below is being held up by three gunmen. Before Charlie can warn him of gunfire possibly stampeding the herd, Tracy is riding off after the holdup men, guns a-blazin'. This starts the stampede and Charlie quickly rides down to alert the stage driver and passengers of the danger, telling them to board and leave quickly. A female passenger refuses, saying she just lost $200 and is going after the outlaws. Charlie offers and she accepts a ride with him. As the plot progresses, we see that Tracy is hot-headed, quick to act and slow to think as he reacts to various situations. Charlie is there, trying to tame him down a bit for his own good. Although he doesn't get shot, in the end, Tracy learns the lesson Charlie has been trying to teach him, the hard way.
