[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm.]
In the world of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David is back in Los Angeles and he’s a bit famous.
The third episode of the HBO comedy’s final season brought the so-called liberal darling back from Georgia, where he made national news for violating the Election Integrity Act when he got arrested for offering Leon’s (J.B. Smoove) aunt, Auntie Rae (Ellia English), a bottle of water while she was in a voting line. He has a trial looming — and is facing up to one year in prison and a fine of $10,000 — but he has the new perk of being praised by strangers, including actress Sienna Miller, who appeared to be flirting with the famous curmudgeon.
With Larry back in L.A., the ensemble was all gathered as Cheryl Hines, Ted Danson, Richard Lewis and Vince Vaughn reunited with David, Smoove, Jeff Garlin and Susie Essman...

Roy Wood Jr. has formally announced his plans to leave The Daily Show.
The comedian and correspondent for the Comedy Central series revealed his plans to leave the show amid its search for a new host in an interview with NPR published on Thursday. The decision to leave, according Wood, was based on the demand of the correspondent’s role on his schedule and attention, as well as a disinterest in continuing in the position while “waiting for someone else to take the top job,” according to NPR.
“I can’t come up with [what] Plan B is while still working with Plan A,” Wood said. “The job of correspondent … it’s not really one where you can juggle multiple things. [And] I think eight years is a good run.”

Chelsea Handler is standing with the WGA strike — “obviously.” The comedian told TheWrap as much during an interview promoting her “Little Big Bitch” comedy tour, which will see Handler headlining the the Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver on May 10 for SeriesFest.
“Obviously, I stand with the writers, absolutely, and the WGA,” Handler said. “It’s unfortunate that it has to come to this.”
To Handler, sharing profits and offering better deals to writers seems like an “obvious move” for large corporations that “make tons of money.”
“The trickle-down economics don’t necessarily work. So I think it’s the only fair thing to do, and hopefully it’ll be over sooner than later,” Handler said.
The actor and writer also spoke about potentially taking over “The Daily Show” after Trevor Noah left the late-night show in December. Comedy Central has since cycled through guest hosts on a weekly basis, with Handler hosting in February.

No film of the Hays Code era revels in its own perversity quite like Mad Love (1935). Mad science, body horror, insanity, obsession, executions, gaslighting, sadomasochism—it’s all here and presented with unparalleled excellence of craft. Though it may seem tame compared to pre-Code fare like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), Freaks, and Island of Lost Souls (both 1932), it manages to just barely sneak its lurid subject matter by the censors under a layer of dark humor, exceptional cinematography, and a masterful performance by Peter Lorre in his first American film.

The Chad-born, France-based Mahamat-Saleh Haroun debuted his latest drama, Lingui, The Sacred Bonds, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last summer. A formally classical vision, his morality tale follows a mother and her pregnant daughter as they navigate their next steps in Chad, a country where abortion is both illegal and condemned by religion. With Lingui now opening in theaters this Friday, courtesy of Mubi, I spoke with Haroun about seven influential films, from silent classics to international landmarks.
As David Katz said in his Cannes review of Lingui, “In Chad, whose two main languages are Arabic and French, “lingui” is a distinct term meaning a ‘bond or connection’; the film’s alternate title gives it a more pious hue—the ‘sacred bonds.’ But what’s fascinating and most novel about African cinema great Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s new drama is the lack of an overtly religiose aura: the bonds...

Exclusive: Fledgling U.S. production firm Rivulet Media has wrapped production today in LA on writer-director Greg Pritikin’s (The Last Laugh) feature The Mistress starring John Magaro (First Cow) and Chasten Harmon (Paterson).
The film was inspired by the history of Pritikin’s Angelino Heights home, and was shot almost entirely on the property.
The film follows newlyweds Parker (Magaro) and Madeline (Harmon) who move into their dream home – a 1892 Queen Ann Victorian in LA’s historic Angelino Heights neighborhood. Shortly after arriving they discover a collection of 100-year-old letters hidden in the walls – desperate and lovelorn correspondence from a young woman who committed suicide after being shunned and abandoned by the owner of the home – a married businessman with whom she was having an affair. While the tragedy of the mistress’s correspondence begins to manifest with disturbing spectral frequency, Maddie begins to suspect that Parker is hiding something dark from his past.

Plenty of beloved television shows have been revived over the years, but don’t expect “Arrested Development” to make a triumphant return.
David Cross, who portrayed Tobias Fünke on the acclaimed sitcom, discussed the show and a handful of other topics in a recent interview on The Daily Beast’s The Last Laugh podcast. Cross noted that a lack of scripts, extended shoots, and various tensions made it difficult for the cast and crew to work on the show and repeatedly stated the show would not be coming back.
“We didn’t know what we were supposed to do, things weren’t making sense to us,” he says. “And we were doing reshoots on things because somebody thought of a joke three weeks later, so we had to reshoot something for a story thing that we had no concept of what was happening. It was a terrible way for actors...

Tig Notaro was the star and creator of Amazon Prime’s comedy series “One Mississippi,” which ran for two seasons and 24 episodes between 2016 and 2017. The streaming giant canceled the show in January 2018. While Notaro intended to continue “One Mississippi” into a third season, the comedian tells The Daily Beast on this week’s episode of “The Last Laugh” podcast that she was partly excited the series was axed because it meant she would never have to think about Louis C.K. again. C.K. was an executive producer on “One Mississippi.”
“There was also a part of me that felt like there was an element of negativity that was tied to the show through a particular producer,” Notaro told The Daily Beast, which notes the comedian was “reluctant to even say [Louis C.K.’s] name out loud.” “A part of me was excited to just get the word that okay, it’s been canceled and be like,...

At night, he bumbles down the streets in drunken discomfiture, cowering as buildings conspire and the city threatens to crush him. Was Borat the true cause of Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock‘s 2006 split?
That’s what Sacha Baron Cohen is claiming. In a upcoming episode of The Daily Beast‘s podcast The Last Laugh, the Borat star and writer said that Anderson, 51, once told him that the controversial film caused the couple to get divorced.
The 2006 comedy film follows Borat, played by Cohen, across the country on a mission to meet (and marry!) Anderson. The actor, 47, told The Daily Beast that he texted Anderson after she brought Rock to a screening of the movie — and Cohen says the rocker’s reaction was not positive.

“‘Borat” made a worldwide comedy superstar out of Sacha Baron Cohen upon its release in 2006, and it also broke Pamela Anderson back into the spotlight. Anderson co-starred opposite Cohen in the controversial mockumentary comedy, playing a fictionalized version of herself who becomes the object of desire for Cohen’s outrageous Kazakh journalist. The movie’s plot revolves Borat’s attempt to come to America so he can marry Anderson. The film’s humor led to several controversies, but it turns out it also led to Anderson and Kid Rock’s divorce. Cohen confirms the news on an upcoming episode of The Daily Beast’s “The Last Laugh” podcast.

Before Samantha Bee moved to TBS to host her own acclaimed late night series “Full Frontal,” the comedian spent 12 years working with Jon Stewart and Comedy Central as a correspondent on “The Daily Show.” Bee made her “Daily Show” debut on July 20, 2003 and signed off April 30, 2015, an unprecedented run that continues to make her the longest-serving correspondent in “Daily Show” history. Bee’s dominant presence on the show made a lot of viewers believe she would replace Stewart when he announced he was leaving, but Bee tells The Daily Beast her name was never really floated around Comedy Central.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: What is the worst performance by a great actor you usually love?
Carlos Aguilar (@Carlos_Film), The Wrap, Remezcla, MovieMaker Magazine
Collectively, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have been enlisted to enhance films by Almodovar, Spielberg, Larraín, Korine, and, of course, Alfonso Cuarón; in addition to many more efforts by the world’s leading directors. Both have also tried their hand at directing, with Luna having a more notable run behind the camera, and more recently basked in the attention of worldwide mainstream success in the form of “Coco” and “Rogue One.”
Yet, buried underneath that steady stream of good marks and auteur-driven opportunities, most of which this critic has been a champion of, is “Casa de Mi Padre.” Matt Piedmont’s debut feature, a Spanish-language satire starring Will Ferrell,...

The specialty box office took a downturn in the second weekend of the year, plunging lower than the usual lackluster early January numbers. Of the fifteen new openings reviewed in the New York and/or Los Angeles papers, none reported grosses. Is this the new normal?
Three new films opened wide. Of the remaining dozen, nine had parallel streaming debuts, including two boasting Oscar-winners, Vanessa Redgrave in “The Aspern Papers” (Cohen Media) and Richard Dreyfuss in “The Last Laugh” (Netflix). Iceland’s “And Breathe Normally” premiered a year ago at Sundance (Netflix). The last two were foreign-language titles, “Touch Me Not” (Kino Lorber) from Romania and “Perfect Strangers” (Pantelion) from Mexico, which yielded $425,000 in 132 theaters on the Spanish-language circuit. But new specialty titles meant to see much more theatrical play? Nada.

The Last Laugh is the latest Netflix original comedy from Netflix and star Chevy Chase, Richard Dreyfuss and Andie MacDowell. This is Chase’s first time headlining in a feature film for a long time. Both he and Dreyfuss work well together as a comedy team, but is this a comedy that all audiences will enjoy, or is just enjoyable for those who still remember the good old days?

It took cojones for Chevy Chase — forever and always holiday-roading patriarch Clark Griswold — to star in a remake of F.W. Murnau's monumental 1924 silent The Last Laugh. Oh, wait. That's not what this is? An original story by writer-director Greg Pritikin, you say, about a retired talent manager, Al Hart (Chase), who hits the road with a former client, Buddy Green (Richard Dreyfuss), to rekindle their glory days? Ok, well, at least Murnau won't be rolling over in his grave with Emil Jannings.

If you’re a fan of Chevy Chase and/or Richard Dreyfuss, they star together in a new movie together called The Last Laugh, which is coming to Netflix.
I’ve always enjoyed the work of both of these actors and it’s great to see them starring in a new film together! The movie tells the story of a retired talent manager Al Hart (Chase), who is reunited with his first client, Buddy Green (Dreyfuss), a comic who quit show business 50 years ago. Well, Hart convinces Buddy to escape the retirement community that they’ve been living in to hit the road for a cross-country comedy comeback tour.
The movie looks like a charming comedy that I would enjoy. It also stars Chris Parnell, Kate Micucci, and Andie MacDowell.
The Last Laugh was written and directed by Greg Pritikin and Netflix will release it on January 11th, 2019.

"Do you even have an act?" "I never had an act." Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for an indie road trip comedy titled The Last Laugh, the latest from filmmaker Greg Pritikin. The comedy stars Chevy Chase as a retired talent manager who is reunited with his first client, Buddy Green played by Richard Dreyfuss, a comic who quit show business 50 years ago. This is another one of those amusing old geezers go on a road trip and re-discover how much fun the world is kind of films. The small supporting cast includes Chris Parnell, Kate Micucci, and Andie MacDowell. This looks like it has a few good laughs, but not as many as you might be expecting from this duo. Watch below.
