Not to be confused...

With the excellent MJ album of the same name, or the definition of thriller which cannot be found in this film. Rating this flick as a 3. It isnt the most horrible movie ive ever seen and there were a few decent performances, mainly from the Concerned Principal and Hot Teacher trying to Make a Difference. I really liked the illustrations in the credits- they were actually pretty well done. Our story starts out with a gaggle of bratty 10 year olds playing a cruel trick on kind hearted Chauncy. After an accidental death, that could have easily been avoided had the little demon spawns merely not acted like gigantic jerks, the kids decide to blame Chauncy. Hes hauled off to juvie, after promising to get them all back. Four years later, the bratty 10 year olds have evolved into 26 year old high schoolers. Every horror cliche imaginable is featured here. We have the Good Girl going out with Mr. All Star. Bimbo McSluttyton, who has mental issues and plays with her hair a lot and stuffs her bra. Psycho Tough Girl, who seems hell-bent on ending up in federal prison. Love-lorn Loser and Guy With Glasses. Requisite Minority of the Bunch, here represented as a Latina. A douchy R. Kelly-esque sleazebag who has no problems sleeping with a maybe legal, maybe not groupie. Even a crabby Asian store keeper and Drunk Mama! Anyway, our merry band of stereotypes have lots of fun adventures and do lots of great things for their community. JK, LOL! No, they totally are only really focused on the big homecoming dance, and can you really blame them? After all, they're in their mid 20s, they've probably only had 7 or 8 of these things. They become mildly concerned when they find out Chauncy has been released from juvie. They become slightly more concerned when various members of the gang begin turning up dead. Dun-dun-DUN!!!! Who is doing it??? And, WHY?? Welp, you'll just have to see the explosive ending!!! Anyway, this is the kind of mindless tripe i enjoy watching, because it makes me feel better about my bad life choices. No matter my failures, ive never starred in a really wretched movie.

Only an excuse

This is just an all black version of a few 80s horror films poorly knitted together, Prom Night first sprung to mind, it uses music similar to Halloween, it actually fails to emulate any of them, the acting is fine but the plot line vaguely exists, there is no sense of dread nor drama, it just plods along and feels like the film makers simply wanted to make a point more than a good movie.

This has to be the worst movie ever created. The acting is beyond disgraceful, and even worse UNIVERSAL PICTURES picked it up. Shame on u universal ,I'm truly disappointed.

This crappy movie has every hood and high school cliche from the 80's and early 90's. This is the worst thing I've ever seen. It doesnt even warrant a break down.

Warning: Spoilers
Kids prank Chauncy and he accidentally kills one of them. Chauncy is mentally slow and the kids don't mention the prank. Four years later he is out of "juvie" in time for Compton's Prom...er ah Homecoming. Kids die.

We have seen this done before and better. Hip-Hop star named "Unique?" Is this an Eddie Murphy joke? It looks like the kids aged from 10 to 18 in those 4 years. Copy-cat script didn't add anything new.

Guide: F-word. Implied sex. No nudity.

Painful to watch
haskel-7295121 April 2019
Quite possibly the most cliche ridden horror movie of the century so far, which is quite a feat considering the screenplay is so underwritten. There is not a single redeemable character here, or a half developed one. Some people should never get a second chance at filmmaking, the writer/director here should top that list.

So bad its funny
pdbordelon20 April 2019
Don't take it seriously and you may enjoy this movie. Its predictable, poorly acted, stereotypical, etc. Yet, like car accident, I just couldn't look away. The dialogue is hysterically cringe-worthy throughout.

The irony of the title....
Sleepin_Dragon28 March 2020
With the decent music and fact that it was distributed by Universal you could be forgiven for thinking this was half way decent, however there is no mistake, this is awful.

It's a dreadful film, there is nothing unique, every sequence has been seen before, it all felt as if it had been stitched together from other movies.

The acting is shocking, absolutely dreadful, every single character was horrid, nobody was in the least bit likeable.

Possibly the least thrilling thing I've sat through. 2/10.

Give me back my two hours

Warning: Spoilers
Great movie to watch when you have plenty of time to waste or to use as background noise. Plenty of scenes that make no logical sense. -Chauncey could suddenly speak normally when he had a stuttering problem in the beginning -He suddenly turned a lighter skin tone after 4 years? -the kids looked like they were 11. Suddenly after 4 years they look 25 and are in high school? -have 30 people at prom as if any high school has such a low amount of students let alone seniors. -hoochie love? I have to laugh. -their teacher wearing a bodycon dress like she's going to the club as if that outfit is allowed at any high school -when the Mexican dude was talking to his girl and Chauncey grabbed him from behind and she supposedly didn't hear any of that going on when she was turned in the opposite direction. -the girl then did a horrible jump and tripped and shockingly broke her leg to the point where blood was coming out? I can't. -the annoying girl with the curly hair who pretends to be her twin when looking in the mirror...the singer she hooked up with takes a call outside and gets killed by Chauncey and screams yet she acts like she can't hear anything and continues taking selfies. She then magically gets dragged by the legs out of the car door. The end of the scene she ends up being found dead in the car?? -the rude girl pulls out a gun and everybody continues to dance. Koolaid comes out of the gun instead. -the ending of who the killer is was kinda surprising, kinda not. I only watched this movie because of the cast mainly being black people. Still didn't expect it to suck as much as it did.

MEGA CRAP even for Blumhouse
iamkeysersoze-132284 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Thriller is a Blumhouse film. I do like Blumhouse and they have some pretty cool ideas but sadly they don't always execute them well. You know a Blumhouse film is bad when they don't even have any cool ideas to put into a film.

You know the film will be a disaster when the opening is rather comical than serious. This film is a little over 80 minutes, but it's so uninteresting, it would rather focus on a group of unlikable teenagers who ruined a guys life rather than the killings. It's really obvious that some films struggle to balance elements of the slasher genre. This film suffers a lot.

Sadly the film feels very tame for a slasher film, it does have a couple of good kills but that's pushing it. There are few tolerable moments at the start of the film but it just deteriorates into chaos.

The twist regardless of it being obvious, makes the film an absolute let down more than it already is. The horror aspect is really non existent, it only exists in the killings. Even then there is no suspense really.

Overall it's just one to avoid. It's a rubbish film and a disappointment for Blumhouse. If you can make a drinking game out of this film, then perhaps there is some enjoyment to be had

Making a Comeback
brannon-7490115 April 2019
Obviously the movie has been done before. It's prom night 1980 meets Carrie 1976 meets Prom Night 2008. But the way it's done is perfect. It's up am coming black cinema and they're proving that they're not just background characters and putting an end to race tropes. Oh and by the way I'm white.

What a piece of crap
mariowood17 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My husband and I were looking forward to this movie. The description sounded good and it was categorized as slasher/ horror not to mention the TV-MA rating so we were hopeful. We love graphic gory horror movies. This movie was so disappointing. How do you call it a slasher horror when the most graphic scene was a guy getting cut across his chest and seeing some blood. The rest of the killings happened off camera. WTH? We were sitting there like what in the hell is this crap. Why the TV-MA rating lol? What a joke. I will say the twist at the end was good. We liked the cast but the rest just sucked. Don't waste your time if you're looking for a real horror movie.

So lame it was a comedy 😹😹😹
mrstarango28 April 2019
We laughed all the way through at the horrible writing. So corny and unrealistic. Black people don't even talk like this anymore. There was nothing hood about any of the characters despite them repeating their desire to get out of it!

Just about watchable
Pairic9 April 2020
Thriller: Teen-Slasher flick set in Compton. A boy with special, Chauncey, needs is tricked into believing he is being attacked by monsters and accidentally kills one of his tormentors. The rest of the gang lie about the circumstances of the death and Chauncey is sent to Juvenile Prison. Four years later it's Homecoming weekend at their High School and the gang are doing teen things. But Chauncey has been released. A hooded killer starts to pick off the teens one by one. Eviscerating, clubbed to death etc. Nothing particularly new in this film, all a bit predictable and mediocre. Writer/Director Dallas Jackson delivers a just about watchable horror-revenge movie. 4.5/10. On Netflix.

The acting in this is terrible to day the least. Chauncey didn't talk after being released from jail. Lame. The ending was interesting though with the unsuspecting turn of events.

Low Budget Film and It Shows...
I was rooting for this film as there's quite a few Black actors and actresses in it that I know from other things but minute-by-minute, as the movie progresses I was slowly let down. The movie was half-asses in the writing department and the directing was given 3/4ths more effort but failed to deliver. It's got this "Black Jason" feel to it, but poorly structured with a booboo plot. I shook my head several times during the movie in response to the corny lines and music. This movie is ew, just ew.

Bad.
tfminfl2 May 2019
329. Thriller. And then there's this piece of crapola. We meet a group of children who decide to play a prank on the slow kid. Prank goes wrong. One kid dies. Blame the slow kid. Slow kid gets sent away til the age of 18. Now the group of kids all about to go to senior prom get picked off one by one by a killer in a hoodie, just like the one the slow kid wore, still wears, hmmm who could it be? Oh don't worry there's a twist, a crappy one, but it is there! A badly acted teen slasher flick. The "slow" kid, never shows any signs of being "slow". The kid that dies has a twin, yep one of the girls that screwed up the whole thing, never shows any caring whatsoever. Just one that really sucks. Filmbufftim on FB.

WORST MOVIE AND ACTORS EVER
sihamabdelaziz26 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is such a waste of time and money!!!! The actors in this movie are horrible and the story line is so predictable. Everything happened so fast. Especially Lisa Walker when she screamed when she supposedly thought she seen "Chauncey Page" in the gym and especially in the abandoned house when she had a nightmare. I don't see a future for any of the actors that where in this movie.

I like the way there are moments where you think the killer is there but it surprises you by not being him but some petty fight between the characters.
