The 2003 premiere of The Curse of the Black Pearl launched the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, a series of movies that soon became one of the most popular franchises of all time and was a massive success for Disney. The franchise was led by one of the biggest stars of that period, Johnny Depp, whose charismatic appearance as Jack Sparrow became a pillar of pop culture. And while we cannot deny that the overall quality of the movies dropped by the time the fifth movie was released, as a whole, it is still one of the most popular franchises of all time. Now, it has been seven years since the last movie in the series, and while we did know that Disney was working on reviving the franchise, we did not know – due to conflicting reports – what they were working on.

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Starring Jude Law (Firebrand), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and more, the film will will have an exclusive release in theaters nationwide later this year.
Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Mary Elizabeth Winstead doesn't think there'll be any more 'Birds of Prey' movies. The 39-year-old actress was under contract to play Huntress in multiple films in the franchise but after the first picture - which saw Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn team up with a gang of other female heroes - proved to be a box office flop on release in 2020, she admitted it's unlikely she'll be returning to the role. She told Independent.co.uk: “I love that film, even if it’s polarising. It’s got people who love it, and people who didn’t love it so much. And it wasn’t a flop by any means, but I think it also wasn’t quite enough of a success to keep on with it.“Which is unfortunate, because I loved playing her. But I was really thankful that I got to do something left of centre in the superhero world.

Playing a comic book character like Harley Quinn has its ups and downs, like dealing with intense fandoms and getting to pretend to do some seriously wild things. For actor Margot Robbie, one of the hardest parts of playing the Joker's gal wasn't trying to perform any stunts or memorize unusual dialogue, but instead was just a matter of wearing one of her costumes.
In the 2016 film "Suicide Squad," Robbie played her first live-action incarnation of the character before reprising the role in the 2020 film "Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" and the 2021 film "The Suicide Squad." She had plenty of outrageous outfits in each film, but her main costume from the first film was a major pain. Not only did she have to wear ridiculous short shorts that would have caused a constant wedgie, but she also had some janky jewelry that caused her some painful problems.

Todd Phillips’s hotly anticipated supervillain sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” has secured itself an R rating from the MPA, as per Deadline. This is not too much of a surprise, as the 2019 smash “Joker” remains the top-grossing R-rated picture in history. Somewhat surprising, however, was the reason given by the “we’re not a censorship organization” censorship organization.
In addition to “strong violence”, “language” (sure), and “some sexuality” (okay), the group cited “brief full nudity.” Full, eh? Just how much of a clown show will we be seeing here?
“Joker: Folie à Deux”’s big draw for most audiences will be Lady Gaga’s turn as Harlene Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn) the Bugs Bunny-like psychiatrist who falls in love with the Clown Prince of Crime. Margot Robbie played the fan-favorite character in the “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” films, while Kaley Cuoco voices her in the not-for-kids animated series.

“The People’s Joker” isn’t going to end the 2010s superhero boom all by itself. Other factors are contributing to the decline: “Madame Web” flopped. “The Marvels” and “Aquaman and the Last Kingdom” barely made a ripple. And the simple fact that stars like Dakota Johnson and Kristen Stewart feel free to shit on the superhero-industrial complex — in Johnson’s case, from the inside — without fearing for their careers is a sign that Marvel and DC don’t have the stranglehold on the film industry they did only a few years ago. But Vera Drew’s “queer coming-of-age fair use superhero world parody” might just be the killing blow.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer said in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that the current plan is to “reboot” the beloved Disney adventure franchise, which has grossed $4.5 billion across five movies. Bruckheimer was fielding a question about the future of his hit franchises, which also includes the Tom Cruise-starring “Top Gun” series.

Netflix periodically removes movies and TV shows from its streaming service due to the expiration of licensing agreements with content owners. Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC movies were added to Netflix in waves starting December 2023. This is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategy to license more titles to third-party services like Netflix.
Consequently, 2023 marked the first time HBO titles were available on Netflix, with plans for more throughout the year, but the contract was short-term in nature over a period of 3-5 months, and now by the end of March, most DC superhero movies that remain on the platform will be removed. The list of the movies that will leave Netflix is as follows:
‘Man of Steel’ (2013) ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016) ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016) ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017) ‘Justice League’ (2017) ‘Shazam!’ (2018) ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ (2020) ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (2020) ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) ‘Black Adam’ (2022) ‘Shazam!

Intimacy coordinators, basically delicate choreographers for sex scenes, are not new to Hollywood productions. But this may be a first.
For the Paramount+ with Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow,” in which Ewan McGregor plays a Russian aristocrat banished to a bleak hotel room during the early days of the Soviet Union, the actor told Britain’s Radio Times that the production still used an intimacy coordinator for one romantic sequence, even though his scene partner was Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his wife of two years.
“We did have an intimacy coordinator!” McGregor said, when it was suggested he probably didn’t need one. “It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the crew, and it’s odd to be naked in front of people, it’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera. The Dcu films in the Zack Snyder era were undoubtedly divisive among fans. The discourse around the films has mostly steered towards the negative side with many feeling underwhelmed by the undercooked narratives and the unsatisfying world-building. While there were bright spots such as Wonder Woman, Shazam!, and Aquaman, others were not received as well as the three.
Many DC films including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are now streaming on Netflix
In addition to Max, Netflix also streamed most of the Dcu films of that era, making them accessible to people all over the world, especially in countries where Max is not available yet. Unfortunately, it seems Netflix is now removing various DC titles from its content by the end of March 2024.

The character of Harley Quinn — a harlequin-clad moll for the Joker — first appeared on "Batman: The Animated Series" in the 1992 episode "Joker's Favor." She was played by voice actress Arleen Sorkin, who gave the character a Brooklyn-adjacent "bubblehead" voice that immediately struck viewers and quickly earned the character fans. Harley Quinn was very similar in look and presentation to a character named Prank (Zoey Clark), the kooky moll of the Trickster on the 1990 series "The Flash." Her origin story was simple: Dr. Harleen Quinzel served as the Joker's psychiatrist, and he had such a powerful personality, that she abandoned ordinary life to become his supervillainess girlfriend.
Harley would appear in only nine episodes of "Batman: Tas," but she eventually began appearing in DC Comics. In recent years, Harley has become arguably a more popular character than the Joker and has formed a life of her own, breaking up with the...

Appearing in superhero flicks isn’t always easy for stars to pull off. Even acclaimed actors often turn down such projects because of the intense effort that goes into filming. While casual moviegoers often believe that it’s all about putting on the superhero suit and fighting off villains, there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes.
Christian Bale as Batman
One of the biggest challenges that often goes unnoticed by audiences, is the change of accent that’s flawlessly done by actors. Oftentimes, fans don’t even realize that superhero stars like Christian Bale had an accent, because of the way they pulled off their onscreen characters. So, here are a few of the most renowned superheroes whom America might have never accepted, had they not changed their accents effortlessly for their roles.

While Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer may have won the most awards, Ryan Gosling’s performance of ‘I’m Just Ken’ from Barbie stole the Oscars earlier today. Clad in a glittering pink suit, Gosling’s solo performance of his Oscar-nominated song received a standing ovation and made the entire auditorium stand up and sing.
Apart from a surprise guitar solo by Slash from Guns N’ Roses and Wolfgang Van Halen from Van Halen, fans picked out one more detail from Gosling’s soon-to-be legendary performance. The pink suit worn by Ryan Gosling as well as the background dancers’ tuxedo with pink stripes was a direct reference to Marilyn Monroe’s iconic costume from the song ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’.

While Marvel has won many hearts and box office records, the studio has rarely been the favorite of award shows such as the Oscars and Golden Globes. These awards are mostly reserved for films that go beyond genre tropes and have elements of arthouse. Marvel’s Black Panther is the only film that was nominated for Best Picture.
However, the prestigious Saturn Awards have constantly honored the franchise as they focus on sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres. Marvel has dominated the Saturn Awards for Best Comic-to-Movie Film category, which is widely regarded as the ‘Oscars for Superheroes’. Ever since it was established in 2013, only one DC film has had the honor of receiving the award, and it is not Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

Madame Web’s woes are piling up faster than rocks in a landslide. The Sony-Marvel collaboration which released last week, had a dismal opening weekend at the box office while also being brutally panned by critics and audiences worldwide. Entering into its second week, the Dakota Johnson film has taken a further nosedive in box office collections.

The Star Wars franchise is recognized as one of the most iconic and culturally significant film series ever produced. It has not only achieved mainstream success but has also attained a unique and unparalleled status in the realm of media. With that said, it appears Ewan McGregor was advised not to take up his iconic role by another Star Wars star.

As much as "Star Wars" might seem like a clear net-positive for any actor's career, history has shown that it's not always as good as it sounds. Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin in the first movie, was famously bullied out of acting for his supposedly bad performance. Natalie Portman also struggled to find work after the prequels because her performance as Padme was considered pretty wooden too. Basically everyone involved in these movies is indeed a perfectly fine actor; the problem was just that George Lucas is bad at directing his actors, as shown by how even Christopher Lee and Samuel L. Jackson seemed to performing below their abilites.
Even in the agreed-upon good movies in the franchise, the actors involved could sometimes struggle to find meaty roles later on. Mark Hamill became a much-celebrated voice actor after the original trilogy, while Carrie Fisher carved out a career for...

Sony’s Universe of Spider-Man Characters is struggling. While the cinematic universe is better off than most other attempts at making a connected film franchise, that is only a result of the producers of this universe willing to produce and launch subpar products. With Morbius being as big a flop as it was, fans assumed that the only way for Sony was up. However, that might not be the case after all.

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.

So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

Warner Bros. really likes being in the Margot Robbie business. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group has signed a multi-year first look feature film deal with Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment. It will make WB the first stop for any film projects Robbie wishes to produce through her production arm, which she runs alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
It’s no big question as to why. Robbie and Ackerley together produced WB and Mattel’s “Barbie,” which grossed $1.45 billion as the highest-grossing film of 2023, and went on to earn eight Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture.

Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directly connected to all the others. In the "season finale episodes," characters would team up. The MCU never told very sophisticated stories — they all boiled down to "good guys" and "bad guys" engaging in pugilism — but they captured the public's attention like no film series had before.
Naturally, Warner Bros. tried to imitate the McU's success by launching the Dceu in 2013. After all, Warner Bros. still owned the film rights to an enormous back catalogue of superhero characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,...

Those who were disappointed by the January box office will just have to hope things improve in February, the month that has just one government holiday and also a Hallmark holiday, both happening in the same week. Those holidays often lead to some of the month’s bigger releases, so things can still take an uptick. Read on for Gold Derby’s February 2024 box office preview.
“Argylle” (Apple/Universal) – Feb. 2
The movie kicks off the month may also be the biggest, and that’s because filmmaker Matthew Vaughn not only has a great track record with the “Kick-Ass” and “Kingsman” movies, but also because he’s assembled an astounding cast, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Catherine O’Hara, Ariana DeBose and even pop star Dua Lipa. The movie is based on the brand new spy novel by “Elly Conway” (played by...

Margot Robbie, lead actor and producer of “Barbie,” is to be awarded the Aacta Trailblazer Award next month by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts.
Hailing originally from Queensland, the presentation will be a homecoming of sort for Robbie. The award will be presented to her at the 2024 Aacta Awards Ceremony on Feb. 10 at the Home of the Arts in Queensland’s Gold Coast.
“Margot Robbie’s impact extends beyond her on-screen performances, as she continues to shape narratives and challenge industry norms. Her commitment to empowering women in film, combined with her talent and business acumen, solidifies Robbie as an influential figure in the entertainment world and a deserved recipient of the 2024 Aacta Trailblazer Award,” said the organization.
Her notable roles include “I, Tonya,” where she portrayed figure skater Tonya Harding, and “Bombshell,” where she played a young woman navigating the toxic environment of a news network.
