Animal attack movies have been quite a lucrative genre for a very long time. Obviously, Jaws is the beginning and the end of the conversation but there’s so much more. Grizzlies, whales, dogs, you name it have been the focal point of horror films and will continue to be there with things like Cocaine Bear, The Meg 2, and others infiltrating theaters on a yearly basis. Most of these, of course, are fictional accounts like Stephen King giving us Cujo or any number of other on-screen animals gone wild. There are, however, the rare account that is based on a true story and today is one of those cases. Alligators and crocodiles...

Despite the title and presence of writer/director Andrew Traucki, The Reef: Stalked is not a sequel to The Reef. Rather, like his films Black Water and Black Water: Abyss they’re unrelated films that share only a common monster, crocodiles in Black Water, and sharks in The Reef.
This time around we’re introduced to diving enthusiast Nic. After she finds her sister Cath dead, drowned in the bathtub by her abusive boyfriend Greg however that changes.
Nine months later she can’t even see water let alone resume diving, without imagining her sister’s death. Hoping it’ll be therapeutic she joins her old diving crew Jodie and Lisa, and her other sister Annie (Saskia Archer; Bali 2002) at the beach. Their kayaking trip turns out to be anything but...

Survival thriller aficionado Andrew Traucki has commenced production on his latest project The Reef: Stalked, a sequel to 2010’s The Reef.
Filming began today in Queensland’s Bowen and will continue for six weeks.
Teressa Liane (The Vampire Diaries), Ann Truong Kate Lister and newcomer Saskia Archer make up the cast, playing four friends on a kayaking and diving trip in Papua New Guinea that soon goes sideways.
Much like in the original film, the group must face down a great white shark, with this instalment exploring resilience, recovering from trauma and the strength of female friendship.
“I’m thrilled The Reef: Stalked is in production and back to Bowen where we shot parts of The Reef 11 years ago,” writer/director Traucki said in a statement.
“As a lover of survival tales, there is nothing I enjoy more than storytelling that pits humans against nature and asks the question ‘How would I survive?...

Director Andrew Traucki returns to croc-infested waters for Black Water: Abyss, a stand-alone sequel to his 2007 crocky horror Black Water. As crocsploitation pictures go, it’s a largely toothless affair, but it does have a couple of snappy moments.
Set in Northern Australia, the plot centres on thrill-seeker Eric (Luke Mitchell), who sets out to explore an uncharted cave system and persuades his girlfriend Jennifer (Jessica McNamee) and their friends Yolanda (Amali Golden) and Viktor (Benjamin Hoetjes) to join him. They’re accompanied by bearded, up-for-anything Cash (Anthony J. Sharpe), who acts as their guide. However, once underground, they’re cut off by a flash flood and find themselves trapped alongside a large underground pool, with the waters rising. To make matters worse, they soon discover that they...

Black Water: Abyss was one of the first new film releases here in the UK, to welcome audiences back to the joys of the cinema after many (though not all) re-opened on the 4th July. In fact it was this writer’s first trip back to a cinema since 2020 went to hell in a handbasket and Covid tried to drag the movie industry into the dark and murky waters, and thankfully it proved to be a wise choice. As Black Water: Abyss is arguably the perfect kind of flick to see in a cinema environment. As the senses are elevated and director Andrew Traucki’s sequel to his 2007 crocodile horror Black Water is another effective nail biting natural horror.

Director Andrew Traucki’s ferocious crocodile nature attacks horror sequel Black Water: Abyss is currently doing the rounds in select UK cinemas and last week hit VOD and select theaters Stateside. The film was actually one of the very first to lead the pack of new movies swimming to the big screen, as some cinemas re-opened early in July. Arguably, a croc croc horror horror, is one of the best kinds of films to re-open cinemas with, as it is an experience well suited to cinema. Black Water: Abyss sees a team of friends exploring a hidden cave system, only to be trapped inside by unexpected rising floodwaters from a storm that is wreaking havoc above ground…and worse still, they are not alone down there. So, as this film circles the crowds who have ventured back into the cinematorium, we have taken a look at six other horror flicks...

Studiocanal’s road rage thriller Unhinged was the top choice again for cinemagoers in its second weekend while R&r Films’ Black Water: Abyss, director Andrew Traucki’s sequel to his 2007 cult-horror Black Water, opened on limited screens in Oz and the US.
Starved of new, wide releases, the market had to rely on holdovers as well as two French specialty films, Palace’s We’ll End Up Together and Umbrella Entertainment’s Deerskin.
The top 20 titles generated $2.1 million, 4 per cent up on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Directed by Derrick Borte and starring Russell Crowe and Caren Pistorius, Unhinged rang up $701,000 on 193 screens, easing by a mere 12 per cent, upping the total to $1.7 million.

Serving as a much-belated sequel to the 2007 Australian sleeper hit “Black Water,” director Andrew Traucki’s B-movie influenced follow-up, the blandly titled but effectively executed “Black Water: Abyss” is lean killer crocodile film that upgrades the appropriately lo-fi aesthetic of the original, replacing the expansive swamp setting with a claustrophobic cave descent. Relying on muted headlights and murky water for its most effective scares, “Black Water: Abyss” is exactly what it sets out to be, and all the better for it, a thrilling continuation of an improbable franchise that doesn’t rely on the first film for anything other than inspiration.

While the Hollywood studios continue to keep their tentpoles locked up till most American cinemas reopen, indie distributors are releasing a handful of smaller movies with big stars in supporting roles this week.
Can’t wait to see Robert Pattinson in “Tenet”? Well, you can always catch him in the festival-anointed imperialist critique “Waiting for the Barbarians.” While the release date for “Dune” remains in question, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård leads the well-reviewed Scandinavian drama “Out Stealing Horses,” about a widower’s return to the country. And before Liam Neeson returns to action-hero mode with “Honest Thief,” you can watch him playing opposite real-life son Micheál Richardson in “Made in Italy.”
Ok, those pairings probably aren’t for the same potential audiences at all, but it’s still nice to see versatile actors’ more serious work finding its way to streaming. And not all the week’s movies are minor.

As all of us are painfully aware, cinemas have been one of the many casualties of the pandemic lock down. Although it goes without saying that me not being able to go to the cinema is the very definition of a First world problem compared to the loss of income, social contact, health and life that so many have suffered this year, it is still worth saying that it has been difficult to not be able to enjoy films on the big screen. It is of course also important to note that cinemas and theatres are businesses like any other and so the lock down has resulted in loss of income and loss of jobs for many within those industries too.

There are some horror films which one can easily imagine reworked in cartoon form for public information films. Black Water: Abyss has several important lessons to impart early on. if you're going cave diving for the first time, let people know where you are going and what time you will be back. Don't choose a system that nobody has ever explored before, especially not if it's in an area where people have recently gone missing. Check the weather reports first and - if you're in Australia - remember that there are lots of creatures out there that will happily kill you.
The long-awaited follow-up to 2007's Black Water, helmed by one of the original co-directors, this film sees another group of young people get into trouble in the outback, far from help. In a nod to the first film, one of them is pregnant, but she hasn't yet told her.

The combination of claustrophobia, darkness, murky water and one big crocodile adds up to a decently scary time in “Black Water: Abyss,” Andrew Traucki’s belated followup to the abyss-less 2007 original he co-directed with David Nerlich. This time, the tasty humans are trapped in an underground cavern during a flash flood, making for a situation that’s unpleasant even before they discover they’ve got reptilian company.
While perhaps not as memorable as some of the movies it might remind you of (like “The Descent” and “Pitch Black”), this is still a tense thriller that nicely exploits a formulaic nature it doesn’t quite transcend. Russell Crowe thriller Unhinged became the most high-profile UK cinema release in the pandemic era this week, taking a provisional $230K from 250 sites, an average of around $920, with venues still to report.
That number may look fairly minor on first glance but in the current context it offers reason for optimism. Two weeks ago, the entire UK box office totaled $253K with just 15% of cinemas operational (roughly 130). Now, we are at 323 sites open, representing 36% of the total real estate (919 sites). Slowly but surely, the industry is restarting.
The country’s two largest exhibitors, Odeon and Cineworld, are in the process of phased re-openings. Cineworld opened its first venues on Friday (July 31) while Odeon has been taking a slow and steady approach for a few weeks, but numerous major sites including key London venues remain shuttered. The UK’s third largest exhibitor Vue has delayed its re-opening until August 7, when it...

Film fans flocked online during lockdown. As restrictions ease, what’s happening to revive cinema-going and restart shoots? Our critic heads to the cinema to find out
It’s Saturday lunchtime and I am watching Sonic the Hedgehog in a cinema. It’s fair to say that it wouldn’t have been my first choice of film to break my four-month cinema fast. But the nine-year-old got to pick and he reasoned that, since I missed it when it was first released, I absolutely must want to catch up with it now.
What’s remarkable is how reassuringly ordinary the whole experience is. Online booking automatically enforces social distancing around your chosen seats. Not that that’s an issue with our screening – there are only six other people here. There’s a plexiglass screen between the box office and the punters, a roped-off one-way system, staggered start times and wall-mounted hand-sanitisers.

Exclusive: There’s been some confusion this week about whether Unhinged, the Russell Crowe thriller that was recently pushed by its U.S. distributor Solstice Studios from July 10 to July 31 due to continued coronavirus disruption, would also be moving in the UK from its planned July 17 date.
I can clear that up now by confirming that Altitude, the film’s UK distributor, has today moved the title to July 31 to match up with the domestic release.
While it’s fairly standard practice for a UK distributor to move in line with a U.S. release, the question over Unhinged arose from the availability of cinemas.
In the U.S. the picture has become murkier with numerous states facing renewed lockdown procedures due to increasing Covid cases. Yesterday, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey re-closed movie theaters for at least a month, while Los Angeles and New York are among the major box...

The firm has also acquired the Juliette Binoche-starring French title “How to Be a Good Wife” and Australian thriller “Black Water: Abyss.” But its representatives were unable to see screenings of any of the three films in Berlin this year, as they were forced to cancel their attendance of the festival and market due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“We regret that we missed the screenings for ‘Persian Lessons’ and the two other films we bought. Nevertheless, our team still continues to buy films at home, and continue to find high-quality films suitable for the Chinese market,” said CEO Cindy Lin, speaking from Beijing.

Leanne Tonkes, Martin Sacks and Victoria Garrett.
Martin Sacks enjoyed working with director Victoria Garrett in her debut feature Don’t Tell so much that he was keen to collaborate with her again.
The actor had been mulling the idea of a film about a father and son relationship which is tested by an unforeseen tragedy, so he pitched the concept to Garrett early last year.
She immediately sparked to the idea and is now developing the project with Sacks, screenwriter John Ridley and producer Leanne Tonkes.
Sacks will play the lead, the father of two teenage sons who live in a small country town. He’s an ordinary man on an ordinary day until he finds his life turned upside down by an indiscriminate tragedy.
Susie Porter, Nathaniel Dean and Daniela Farinacci will play supporting roles.
For the key role of the 15-year-old son the producers are keen to find a fresh face.
