One of the biggest productions to hit the U.K. in years is gearing up to film outside London next spring, Variety can reveal.
Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings,” which grabbed international headlines when the streaming player moved locations from New Zealand to the U.K., has set its first filming locations. It’s been 14 years since Kirsten Dunst last played Mary Jane Watson in the “Spider-Man” franchise.
Dunst now says that she’s open to returning to the web-slinger’s world. “I would do it. Why not? That would be fun,” she told me Thursday night at “The Power of the Dog” screening at AFI Fest at the Tcl Chinese Theatre. “I would never say no to something like that.”
Then she cracked, “I’d be old Mj at this point with little Spidey babies.”

While there are rumors of former Spider-man stars possibly popping up in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”(Dunst has denied she’s in it during a recent Total Film interview), it’s been confirmed that Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will...

Amulet, the feature directorial debut of actor Romola Garai, has had an odd path to UK cinemas, first debuting at Sundance way back pre-covid in January 2020, and landing on the internet in almost every overseas territory in the 18 months since. Garai’s understated take on the genre nuts-and-bolts of possession horror has lead to a fairly muted rollout from press too, and not nearly as much online buzz as it might deserve. But with a stellar cast and some truly eye-popping effects work, this is very much worth a look; a bold, bloody and ultimately rather beautiful little genre release.

Six years after she first conceived of the idea, Corinna Faith’s “The Power” is gearing up for release. Cleverly set in 1974, during a time when miners’ union disputes led to blackouts enforced by the U.K. government, the British writer-director’s debut feature is a smart and scary horror that marks her as a filmmaker to watch.
“As a first feature, the horror genre is so openly creative,” Faith tells Variety. “Visually, there is so much you can do with that medium to introduce yourself and your style.”
“The Power,” which is now available on streaming service Shudder, focuses on young trainee nurse Val (Rose Williams), who is forced to work the night shift on her first day at the East London Royal Infirmary on one such powerless night. But it soon becomes clear that there’s much more to worry about than the lights going off, with Val...

Exclusive: Sister, the media co-venture owned by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider, and Jane Featherstone, has posted a loss of $7.7M in its first 18 months of trading, during which it expanded its investment empire and was hit by the coronavirus production shutdown.
The producer behind Emmy-winning Chernobyl and Amazon’s upcoming series The Power published its inaugural set of earnings at the UK’s Companies House today, providing a first detailed snapshot of the company, which began operating in September 2019 with the $63.8M acquisition of Featherstone’s production house Sister Original.
In the 18 months to the end of December 2020, the group’s revenue stood at $38.4M. While it is not directly comparable, it was below the revenue of £65.2M ($90M) Sister Original posted in 2019, which was when it delivered Chernobyl to Sky and HBO, as well as BBC series Giri/Haji.
Sister said its revenue was “lower than expected” because of the pandemic.

Set during London’s so-called “Three-Day Week” period — just over two months in 1974 when Conservatives in Britain rationed electricity as part of a dispute with the coal miners whose output supplied most of the country’s energy — Corinna Faith’s The Power is an impressively accomplished debut feature that yokes a classic ghost story to the dynamics of the contemporary #MeToo movement.
