Like vintage Heinlein
ryandannar16 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Suits - Easily my favorite of the first five episodes. Is this a Robert Heinlein story? It feels like one through and through. Somewhere in the future, a community of farmers must defend themselves from an invasion of alien insects. With a chuckle, we discover they are more well-equipped for this job than we might have expected.

This episode toes a fine line between having its tongue in its cheek, and wearing its heart on its sleeve. That is to say, it first seems to be a winking salute to a certain kind of blue-collar kitsch -- but by the end, it had me really feeling something for its goofy-but-human characters. I could have watched a whole movie about these down-home folks and their hi-tech farming hi-jinks.

The animation here looks fittingly hand-drawn and rustic, until the characters move, at which point it becomes obvious that computers were involved. Which is to say, the visual style matches the rustic-meets-hi-tech quality of the story. I found myself thinking of Don Bluth cartoons, those "Brawny" paper-towel commercials featuring the lumberjack (because one character is a dead-ringer), and Heinlein's "Starship Troopers." Surprisingly great stuff!

StarCraft 2 references anyone...?
richardhamwi21 April 2019
The main character voiced by Neil Kaplan who also voiced Tychus Findlay.

Giant cockroaches attacking in a giant swarm..? Zerglings anyone???

Giant mechs? Country and Western music?

Loved the action even if it was empty and predictable. You can't take this show too seriously or you won't enjoy it.

We need a video game version of this
jaystcloud-5130817 March 2019
Honestly, this could definitely be a great video game. Other than that, it looks awesome. But still, if it was a video game, I'd would play it.

Look beyond the action
Adnanski26 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Like in "Starship Troopers", many viewers tend to focus on the action and not on the big picture which unfolds here. It's so clear to me that the human characters here represent America, and the aliens are the immigrants. And in the end it all becomes clear - the final shot shows, as I see it, that we are not on earth but on Saturn, or Saturn-like alien planet, which is home to these creatures, and the humans, despite being nice and relatable characters, are the bad ones, they are the invaders, the aliens are just defending their home planet.

Enjoyed this ep, would make a good game
pwilmotts24 March 2019
Found it quite entertaining, something different that I wouldn't normally watch. I agree with others that it is a great idea for a game, not a lame tablet game called mech farmer but a full AAA title, then I'd buy the game.

Fairly entertaining. If you like big robots shooting things you can get your fix here.

Old McDonald had a mech
noxaman10 March 2022
Am I the only one who got strong Iron Giant vibes from the weapons, smoke, and scenery? Beautifully done. What a blast to watch! The low framerate animation was a bit jarring at first, but I quickly forgot all about that.

This is the sort of idea that could easily be spun into a series, or a game. Just has a ton of soul behind it for a little 15 minute short. Strong recommend from me!

Wholesome entertainment.
GraXXoR20 March 2019
Not something you could say for the previous episodes in this series, but this ep could be something for the whole family.

While the story is fairly standard fair, the mix of western and high tech sounds echos of Firefly... But with suits.

Satisfying short.

Best mash up of two different ideas

I love this episode and could see this becoming a new mainstream feature length film or a video game. This is my favorite episode of Love, Death, & Robots by far.

Every frame is Beautiful

A wonderful piece of art this 17 minutes animation is. The characters are drawn so beautifully. The story is quite average but I am so mesmerised by the drawings. Every frame is asking me to make them my wallpaper. Kudos to the artists.

Jolly Ranchers

I've decided to review each of the short films that make up this series individually.

"Suits" was probably my favourite of the first for films that make up this series and the one that I could most conceive of becoming a series in its own right.

The Animation style was much more cartoony than a couple of the earlier ones, almost Disney like in style but no less accomplished.

The story revolves around a group of farmers, who defend their land and livestock from an invading insectoid army with the use of large mechwarrior type suits. It felt like the show could be in the "Starship Troopers" universe - maybe as a prequel, detailing human's early interactions with the bugs. It was a relatively straightforward story admittedly, but could easily have been expanded to at least feature length with a little more back story and world building.

Mech Action
braulio0917 March 2019
This is not the best animation in Love, Death, and Robots. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this for what it is: an action short with mechs and cheesy one liners. It reminded me a lot of Star Troopers.

The setting was interesting and I liked seeing how all characters acted like fighting giant insect aliens in your farm is a boring inconvenience.

The only negative for me would be that some of the voice acting felt a bit forced. It's as if everyone tried their best hillbilly impressions.

A confusing mess

Honestly, I couldn't pay attention to the story because the animation quality swings from great to unbearable, constantly! Pick a frame rate, and stick to it.

Mind-blowing ideas integrated to a really enjoyable action episode.
Oktay_Tuna9 June 2019
I think this episode is one of the best ones in the series, because this had the big robot action which the series had promised and it was quite entertaining. For example, all the reviewers are saying, I would play this game. Second, the symbolization is really great. I don't want to give any spoilers but if you cut last 5 seconds from this episode, it becomes a 7 for me. The idea is simple but its integration and perspective are magnificent.

A simple golden age tale
RogerBorg30 May 2022
Leave aside that the economics of the situation here make no sense (how do you turn beef into rockets?), this delivers exactly as promised: a simple, rollicking tale of farmers-in-mechs versus space bugs.

The artwork and voices are both exactly on tone, clearly Disney inspired, and missing only a Space Dog to complete the scene. Sadly, the animation itself is a little lacking, being low frame rate, as though they ran out of rendering time or budget and only hit the key-frames and not the tweens.

Still, you'll quickly forget and forgive this as it rips along as a spanking pace. It's cliched and you've seen all the elements before elsewhere, but it's got an enthusiastic and unforced charm to it. Simplicity can be a virtue. Enjoy it for what it is.

Redneck gundam
jamesrupert20145 July 2022
Giant-space bugs threaten a bucolic community, forcing the farmers to hop into their towering heavily-armed mecha and head out to defend green acres. Good action-paced fun and one of the better episodes of the generally very good first season of the animated anthology. The closing 'twist' is excellent.

starcraft
stani_cv2 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is 100% inspired by starcraft 2. Whoever thinks this should be made into a video game , it's already been done. Neil Kaplan, the main voice actor is also voicing Tychus Findlay from the game who happens to operate a giant mech in one of the missions. The alien creatures here are also copies of the zerglings.

With that said animation is good, but the end makes no sense. Why colonize an extremely hostile planet? They should have just left it at some inter-dimensional rift.

Bugs

Warning: Spoilers
I've to say, the bugs in this episode are almost identical to Glyphids, from a video game Deep Rock Galactic developed by Ghostship Games. Moreorver it's pure awesomeness, love the style and the plot, I'd like to play a game based on this.

Warning: Spoilers
Nice little episode but come on how many clichés can you possibly fit into a 16 minute short? I know I know, the main focus is on the animations but still, a bit of unpredictability wouldn't go amiss. That being said, this animation style is probably the least eye catching so far, though it was still nice, kind of comic book-like. The bare concept for the episode was a good one and it does very well to plant you in the implied world straight away. Nothing amazing but a nice watch

Well done
mason2527 May 2022
This was amazing, seemed a bit weird that they had lots of surplus ammo given the ending circumstances but oh well.

I'm more amazed that not one single person has said the deebees look almost identical to the Chrysallids from the X com games.

100% Starcraft

Only Starcraft fans would see that this is straight up Starcraft. I noticed just from the beginning music. Then the voice and the obvious zerglings. Love it.
