Good movie, BUT...
1 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
*possible spoilers ahead*

From my standpoint, not all "freaks" are confused teenagers who can learn to clean up and be a "normal" person. Usually it's just a lifestyle. Also, not all gay people are pains in the ass who pay teenagers to perform sexual acts with them in a car. It just seems a little unfair to me that these minorities had been singled out and made examples of as bad influences.

It takes talent to make a movie this bad!!!
1 February 2001
Certainly there are enough reviews on this movie for everyone to know that it's unwatchable. First of all, the directing is the worst that I've seen in a long time. To my bewilderment, 99.9% of the shots are tilted at a certain angle. After a while, it made me almost nauseous. The acting was horrible also. Oh well, you can always count on Hollywood to make messes like this again and again.

Not a lot of substance but great imagery!
18 August 2000
I really think that Ebert should start thinking twice before he throws out another one of those "best movie of the year" comments! It certainly does not apply to this movie. The plot is so plain and uninteresting that all the eye-popping and colorful artsy visuals cannot save it. I didn't find the movie pretentious or unrestrained, it's just that there's hardly anything deep to say about it at all. It was fun to watch, but definitely not satisfying to the thinking man.

Christian Bale Delivers An Incredible Performance!!!
14 August 2000
The movie is great. Christian Bale is great. And for those who couldn't fathom what the movie is about or its unconventional twist in the ending, you're in luck!!! They still have several copies of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" on the shelves at Blockbuster.

Awesome!!!
7 August 2000
Considering that this is a made-for-TV movie, I have to give it an 8 out of 10. Great acting, good plot, exciting actions and fun to watch. If you like Indiana Jones or Sean Patrick Flanery, you've gotta see this!

Great movie if you're 13 years old...
6 August 2000
I saw this w/ my sister, who was 13 at the time. She loved it and I didn't. It's not so much the characters or the dialogue but the poorly written script (with big, big holes in it) that couldn't bring everything together. Almost all of the performances are stellar, however. Sean Patrick Flanery and Sarah Michelle Gellar show that they could be great together. This movie could have been very satisfying but too bad it didn't turn out.

Definitely not the best romantic comedy I've seen...
6 August 2000
Well, first of all, I give it 6 out of 10. The plot is not very well thought out, and the characters are portrayed as very bland and superficial. The only good performances come from Sean Patrick Flanery (who excels in any movie that he's in) and Debbie Reynolds. There were hardly any chemistry between the leading characters, which I suppose isn't really their fault but the script's. Overall, the movie is not even worth commenting much about so I guess I will stop here.

Not as bad as you would think!
1 August 2000
From the ratings here on this site, I didn't expect too much seeing it on dvd. However, I had a good time and the movie was quite entertaining. The humor is mostly subtle but intelligent. Casey Affleck is amazing and totally reminded me of his brother Ben in some scenes. Overall, a 7 out of 10.

A Very Enjoyable Movie
20 June 2000
This movie starts out kinda weak, but then it gets going and just sucks you in. Some people may say that it's a rip-off of either Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs or both. Well, some of it is. But nevertheless, the movie can stand on its own with lots of action scenes (I couldn't help but wanting more), humor, some great surprises, and good performances from all the actors (there were hardly any actresses in the movie!). I must say that Willem Dafoe, however, gave a very unique and exceptional performance, one like I've never seen before. This is a good movie to watch when hanging out with your friends. Too bad it doesn't get the exposure it deserves.

Nothing Too Spectacular...
19 June 2000
This is a good action movie, and Samuel Jackson is pretty good in it. However, I only give it 7 1/2 out of 10 because of Jeffrey Wright's character (Peoples Hernandez). He is the only person that really stands out in the movie. Otherwise the movie probably deserves 6 1/2 out of 10. Good summer movie, though. Doesn't require you to think too much.

Worth Watching
18 June 2000
This movie takes a while to get started, but then you get involved w/ the story and the characters. It is quite sad in my opinion, but don't let that stop you from watching it. The acting is very powerful, especially River Phoenix who was a perfect cast. The only thing that I didn't like was the Shakespearean dialogue at times. If Van Sant had just make it modern then it'd be a lot better. Anyhow, I'm happy with the movie the way it is. Watch it for yourself. Way better than Good Will Hunting!

An Excellent Movie, Very Well Done!
15 June 2000
This movie has everything in it. Well, not everything...but I have to say that it far surpassed my expectations. I rented the DVD thinking that it would probably be like another one of those so so HBO mini-movies. However, I found out that the acting is superb (Ed Harris is brilliant as always). The plot is great and inspiring. Good directing and good cinematography overall. The soundtrack in particular is very fitting in pertinence to the movie. See it when you're not in the mood for action or suspense, but when you want to see a good drama with good acting and believable characters.

A good movie overall
27 May 2000
Ok, so this isn't your typical shoot them up movie or a romantic comedy or drama in any way. It's a combination of everything, and for me it is quite effective. The story is told very well. There are funny moments, touching moments, and enough action/violence to keep the viewer interested throughout. I didn't expect anything before I saw it so I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously it is no Gladiator, but as a Russell Crowe fan I gotta say once again he does not disappoint.

A Great Little Movie
2 May 2000
I don't often comment on movies. However, I do think that this one deserves more than just my vote. It is what I expect when I sit down to watch a movie: pure entertainment and a whole lot of fun! Try to rent the DVD instead of the video if you can. The commentaries alone are worth the rental price. They are just as funny as the movie itself. Don't expect too much out of the story, it is supposed to be a light-hearted comedy and not something that you should be too serious about. Steve Zahn's performance is spectacular. He is probably one of the funniest actors on film. William H. Macy scores again in what I consider one of his best roles so far. He really nailed the part and made it totally believable. The movie is very sweet and warm-hearted but not in a cheesy or heavy tone. This is what you get when you do a movie just for the sake of it and not because you expect to get a 30 million dollar weekend box office. Director Mark Illsley and writer Ed Stone did a great job considering the little amount of time and budget that they had. See Happy Texas for yourself and you will not regret it.

A Great and Satisfying Movie Overall
4 January 2000
First of all, if this movie was 20 minutes shorter, it would have been terrific. Still, if you have the patience to sit through it, you'd find out that it is a very solid movie. If you hate this movie purely because of its length or the mild homosexual suggestions then you should stay home and watch Pokemon on TV next time. The acting was superb, the directing was extraordinary and the scenery was breathtaking at times. Even though I'm not a fan of Matt Damon, I have to admit he's very good in this movie. Also, I like the ending very much and I think it fits the tone and the story line of the movie perfectly. In short, if you have an appreciation for suspenseful/powerful/beautiful movies, go see The Talented Mr. Ripley yourself and you won't regret it.
