Killer Soup (2024)
Dark comedy done right
Killer Soup is the refreshing telling of one of the most used genres in movies, the extramarital affair and its consequences. However, one thing tha makes it apart is the quirky writing, engaging characters, and dark comedy. This is where Killer Soup has made itself stand apart.
The story is quite well paced, especially after 2nd episode. There are enough twists and turns in each episode to keep the viewers hooked to it. There are many characters who were somehow interrelated. Some characters had more importance than the others. Another praiseworthy thing is that it didn't have an open-ending, which is generally the case with almost all of Netflix's original series. Writing can be bland at certain points but there is good use of humor even in the darkest moments.
Coming to acting, there's nothing new to talk about it. We all know how good of an actor both Konkana and Manoj are, but Konkana, in particular, was simply outstanding. She was so good that whole time I was rooting for her. Nasser was equally good as police inspector and so was Sayaji Shinde.
Overall, it's quite a good series which gets better with each episode. You just need to give it time rather than judging by merely two episodes.
The X Files: Home (1996)
Nothing disturbing in it
Watched this episode because read somewhere that this episode was so disturbing that it was banned during those days.
And now after watching it, I can say there was nothing remotely disturbing about it. Maybe the level of gruesomeness shown in this episode was too much for the late 90s to handle, but in 2022, it's not. There are many movies and series much more brutal and gory than this one.
The theme of this episode could be said to be mildly disturbing. The Peacocks surely were intriguing characters, but after watching so many of the movies depicting the murderer family, I no longer find this amusing or extraordinary.
On the other hand, I liked these two Federal agents. I liked how calm they were during the investigation and during the climax.
So, overall, decent enough episode.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)
A visual feast...........
This would be a very simple review-
1. Story - Story is simple. A boy, who is oblivious of his powers, suddenly discovers that he is after all a host to great power. Nothing special, nothing unique. What makes it unique is the inclusion of Hindu mythology in the story.
2. Acting - Acting was very good. Ranbir played his part perfectly and Alia complimented him well. Amitabh and Nagarjuna once again proved why they are held in so much high regard. Mouni Roy was the surprise package here. She absolutely nailed as an antagonist. SRK is in cameo appearance and, just like always, proves why he is special.
3. Songs - Most of the songs are already released. They looked quite good on the big screen, particularly the ending part of Dance ka Bhoot. Rasiya is another song, though it's not released on the internet yet. I think, it's the most beautiful of the lot.
4. Dialogues - Dialogues are bad, or should I say outdated. If this was 2019, those dialogues would've worked. But given the masterpieces we have been introduced in recent times, dialogues felt pale in comparison to them.
5. BGM - BGM was outstanding. They perfectly matched with each scene and the Sanskrit shlokas playing in the background, just made the whole experience even more enthralling.
6. VFX - Now addressing the elephant in the room, the VFX> They are standout. Probably the best VFX of an Indian movie. Each and every shot was well-made with CGI with utmost details.
7. Duration - This is where the movie has failed to deliver. The duration is far too long. There are a lot of unnecessary scenes, which should've been edited out from the final product.
8. Romance angle - Ayan Mukherjee had said that Brahmastra is basically a love story at core, and this is visible in the movie. The romance is sweet, but I think there was way too much emphasis on love.
9. Conclusion - Overall, this movie is very well-made. Apart from few glaring faults in story and dialogues, the rest of the movie is pretty good. It's a theatre experience, and watching it on OTT would not justify how good this movie has been.
Ôdishon (1999)
This isn't a horror movie.
Barring that last 15 minutes where Asami chopped off the leg of Shigeharu, there wasn't anything remotely horrific about this movie.
Nothing at all.
The rest of the movie was just silent conservation only. An attempt was to make people terrify of Asami by hinting that she is a killer, but it was never shown how. All we got was one scene where she used a saw-wire saw to decapitate an old man, and feeding another person her vomit.
If you call this "one of the best horror movie", then I pity you.
Coming to the performance, actress playing the role of Asami was brilliant The way she said deeper, deeper, deeper in the climax, was way too creepy and brilliantly executed.
But that was all in this movie.
There was no tension buildup, the soundtrack was not creepy, and the scenes were not enough to horrify the viewers.
Sadly, this movie doesn't live up to the hype it has. Quentin Tarantino has called this movie as one of his favourite movies, but I now question his choice.
The Office: Goodbye, Michael (2011)
Never believed that I would cry while watching a sitcom.
This is one of the best written episodes in the history of the sitcoms.
I never believed that I would cry myself out while watching a TV series or a movie, but of all other things, a sitcom had me crying.
It was just perfect.
There were little moments that made this episode terrific.
Jim's goodbye was perfect, and so were Michael's parting gift for everyone.
It was sweet, funny, and emotional.
The writers wrote a perfect tribute for Michael Scott and Steve Carell was just brilliant. He acted his heart out in this final episode of his character.
It's quite ridiculous that Steve didn't win an Emmy for his acting in the Office.
Darlings (2022)
Absolutely Loved this movie.
Alia is in great form right now. This is just another feather in her illustrious cap.
After a long time, a good dark comedy from Bollywood.
So the basic story is of a wife who is on a mission to get revenge from her abusive husband. In the process, she is supported by her mother and "friend".
But the purpose of my review is calling out those who were calling this movie to be "abusive" towards men.
Maybe they started this movie from halftime onwards because they surely missed the abuse and torture of Hamza towards Badru. He went as far as smashing her fingers just because she bought a heeled shoe and even killing her unborn child, which was his too.
This movie is not "abusive" towards men, and neither does it show nor promote anykind of violence towards men. On the contrary, it shows that there is a limit to everything. When the water goes above head, Badru had to take things in her hands.
This is what the story is about, that there is a limit of the abuse and violence a wife can handle.
Many choose to watch the movie after reading the reviews.
So this is my attempt to let people be aware of the storyline is not as what is told by some in the reviews below.
Watch the movie for yourself and decide whether or not it promotes violence towards men.
Aamis (2019)
Couple's descent into madness
Cannibalism is the thing that is rare, but not completely unheard of. Many people have resorted to consume flesh of the humans, some do it out of helplessness, some to achieve orgasm, and some to satisfy their taste buds.
This movie explores this bizarre topic. Kudos to the director and writer for this story. It's something that is very rarely explored in the movies. There is one Silence of the Lambs and a French movie, Raw, that I remember explored this theme.
The story is about a couple who began to experiment with different kind of meat and eventually ended up consuming human flesh. As bizarre as this theme is, the more bizarre is the way they resorted to "obtain" human flesh. The guy literally cut up his own flesh to feed it to the lady.
Being a vegetarian, I found it very hard to watch this movie, but still completed the movie just because the premise was interesting.
It's a movie done right, which explores the addiction of people towards something. It also shows how far a person is willing to go to meet the request of the one they love. It has many themes intertwined in it.
Yes, some will find this movie to be absurd and puke-worthy, but it's a brilliantly made movie and the two actors has done a terrific job.
Rudra: The Edge of Darkness (2022)
Could've been better
Make no mistake. This drama is a fascinating tale of cat and mouse chase between the criminals and Rudra.
Rudra is the DCP in Mumbai Police who is feared amongst the ranks. He is the one who is willing to go to any lengths to catch the criminals and save human lives.
Meanwhile, Rashi Khanna (Aliyah Chowksey) is a genius psychopath killer who leaves no evidence that could be used to prove her crime. There is a strange relationship between Rudra and Aliyah, one that is made on the foundation of obsessiveness.
This drama is based on the Luther, a BBC series starring Idris Elba. Ajay in the titular role is terrific, and so is Raashi. Acting wise, there is not a single fault in this series. Everyone played their part perfectly, be it Ashwini or Atul or any of the other actors.
But this series is lacking due to a bit of lackluster script, especially in the first half. While the criminal cases were decent enough, there was not much development in terms of Aliyah's story. We never came to knew why she killed her parents. But the last three episodes are certainly entertaining as the writing got a lot better and the cliffhanger at the end has set it up nicely for a sequel.
The most beautiful aspect of this drama is to be the amazing cinematography. The way Mumbai was shot in this drama was just breathtaking, coupled with the use of dark shots.
Chennai Express (2013)
Funny, comedic and entertaining.
Is this movie good? No, not at all.
But this movie is very entertaining. Yes, the plot is over botched and there is also an issue of overacting, but that's what makes this movie fun to watch.
Actions are over the top and the plot is going nowhere near the end.
Despite so many flaws, I find this movie very funny and perfect to watch to alleviate any stress.
Juvenile Justice (2022)
One of the best kdramas I've ever watched.
The best thing about this drama is that they are not "overly-dramatizing" the crimes as many are suggesting.
On the contrary, these crimes are based on real life incidents that shook Korean society to the core. I still remember about the case where a teenage girl chopped up a young kid and then laughed in the court. This was a real case that happened in South Korea.
As this is cinema, it's certainly dramatized but almost all cases are real including the one with throwing up the brick.
Kim Hye-soo is at her absolute best.
Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein (2022)
Looked like a 90s Bollywood Masala Romantic movie
There is a movie of SRK by the name of Chaahat. In that movie, a rich brat fall in love with poor hero who already was in love with someone else but still harassed him so that SRK will eventually choose her.
This series is exactly like that movie.
Most of the things don't make any sense, but still it's a gripping thriller series.
The acting of the leads is very good, particularly I liked Aanchal Singh and Arunoday Singh near the end was very good addition.
The problem is this series should've been over in the first season, but it'll be unnecessarily carried forward to next season.
Bob Biswas (2021)
AB is scene stealer
Finally Bob Biswas is here and I can't tell how excited I was to see AB in another one of those "movies".
This movie is India's own John Wick. Bob is the titular character who is an assassin but lost his memory and is now forced to return to his previous job.
AB is truly excellent in the movie. While many are comparing him with Saswata Chatterjee, I think it's truly unfair comparison.
In Kahani, Bob was a full bad ass assassin but in this movie he is struggling to discover his identity. AB had acted excellently to show the dilemma of a person who has just recovered from coma, forced to kill people and balance his personal life. But in the end he delivered that legendary evil phrase with perfection.
The true strength of this movies lies in how characters of this movie. Each character has depth and the actors had performed well to make the movie more impactful.
As with Chitrangda, she seems to not age. Just flawlessly beautiful.
Kudos to the cinematographer for wonderfully capturing the essence of the city of Kolkata.
The Family Man (2019)
Only one word.....Brilliant
Undeniably best Indian web series after Delhi Crime.
If you want illogical action sequence like in Bollywood movies, than skip this.
But if you like reality, it's gem.
Srikant Tiwari is an agent but it also shows how he leads his "normal" life as a salaried employee while also saving nation from external forces.
Just watched second season, and Samantha is just brilliant. She is terrifyingly scary and gorgeous. Balanced with right amount of comedy, action and emotional.
Seulgiroun Euisasaenghal (2020)
It's Educational, It's Dramatic, It's Friendship, It's Romance, It's Comic
Another masterpiece by director of Reply 1988. It will take a couple of episodes to get full grasp of this wonderful series. Life-saving doctors, attractive residents, budding romance, old romance, FOOD. It has all in it.
Sarangeui bulsachak (2019)
A Must Watch
First ever K Drama I ever watched. And boy, it's so good.
More importantly, it shows the the life of North Korea which most of us are unaware of. Great chemistry and acting of two lead actors aptly supported by outstanding supporting casts.
