Pip the Piper (1961)
PIP THE PIPER-Simply Charming!
Very much like Mr. Rodgers' Neighborhood, this is a program that speaks directly to you - the viewer!
As with other early children's programs, if there was ANY budget for these programs, it didn't show up on screen! You focused on the characters and the content of the program.
The series was partially sponsored by General Mills and had the three hosts pitching GM cereals. The FCC would eventually ban "Host Selling."
Following PIP, the Spear's moved to Los Angeles, hosted a local kids show entitled JACK IN THE BOX and then opened an advertising agency in Hollywood.
I just recently donated five of these shows to the Paley Museum in New York and Beverly Hills and a set to the UCLA FILM/TV archive.
Here is a sample of the program: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVNHiad2jOw
I recently spoke with Phyllis Spear who is delighted with the fact these shows will be around for others to enjoy.
Let's "follow PIP, Miss Merrynote, and Mr. Leader, too."

I too have a copy of this film as I was one of the first on my block to own a Sony Betamax and liked to tape special programs like this and Dick Clark's 25th Anniversary special, etc. etc. I love compilation material and there is much to see here. As the years have passed, I have acquired many of the original films (Monterey Pop, Beatles on Sullivan), etc. that the program used as clips in this production. Historians would do well to find this. I wouldn't be surprised if it is in the Museum of Radio and TV in New York and Beverly Hills. The beauty of video tape and film is the ability to preserve so much of this great, great history.
