Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Sad but absorbing
I just watched the DVD version of the movie. Even though it was made in 1990 and even though I watched it in 2006, the age of the Spidermans and Pirates, it still impressed me very very much.
The ending was sad but appropriate. The girl mouse shall always be the girl mouse! I liked the fact that Edward didn't try one bit to fit in with the world. He stood out though confused against it. Even in the direst of circumstances did her forget his values. It touched me to see the cruelty of the world crush him in its hellish hands, but just like the silver lining present in every cloud there shall always be a soul mate for each and every one... even though you can't be together forever.
Watch it, might seem like a drag in the first half but I'm sure you'll come out smiling although sad at heart. 10/10 for Johnny Depp and his superb acting. 8/10 for Tim Burton and the movie.
Population 436 (2006)
Average in all aspects
Well, I was kind of hoping for a thriller with this movie, but around half way through you'll see the ending coming if you've watched at least half a dozen thrillers. And I have seen MORE than half a dozen so it was pretty predictable.
Can't say this was too much of a thriller, Michelle Maxwell MacLaren doesn't come anywhere near M.Night Syamalan and his thrillers and suspenses. The other thing that backed me off was the background score. Its always the same weird music which you'd get sick of 15 minutes into the movie. The theme is well... nice.
The story is unique, that I guarantee you, but kinda seemed lame to me. I mean a town with Population at 436 through a 100 years? You can always guess how the climax is going to be! Oh yes, there are a large number of plot holes too.
Decent performances though. Jeremy Sisto, through whose eyes we see the movie give a good enough performance. The camera angles throughout the film were average and impressed me only in the 'chase'. ;) OK, now this movie might be rated R, but the "brief sexuality and violence" lasts only a couple of sec. It should be PG-13.
Predicability and average plot with huge plot holes cause its downfalls. Decent performances uplifts it a bit. Overall though it doesn't fall into MUST-WATCH-OR-ALL-HELL-WILL-BREAK-LOSE, its worth a rental... maybe.... if you're too much of a movie buff.
I give it 5/10. Bite me.
Sin City (2005)
Damn! The best comic adaptation I've seen in my entire life.
Damn again! Man if you like comics books and you want to see your imaginations come to life, then you should consider reading Frank Miller's Sin City and watching this damn movie! Its EXACTLY as if the comic book came to life!!! My God! I was astonished, intrigued and most of all damn impressed with this damn good movie! This movie features 3 stories from Basin City (Sin City itself). You've got Marv's story (a thug who avenges his one-night-stand's death), where Marv is played by a brilliant Mickey Rourke in what I believe is the best performance of his life. Then you've got Dwight McCarthy's story (a private eye who saves Sin City's whore town from an all out war with the cops) Dwight being played by Clive Owen is good and stylish, but he lacked the grace of Rourke. I felt like Owen didn't embrace his character as much as Rourke did. Rourke had even the minutest details covered like Marv's awkward stretching and even his smirk.
The last story is Hartigan's story (a old cop who protects the victim of his last case from a rapist). Hartigan is played by Bruce Willis, Willis being as brilliant as ever. But again I didn't quite feel the graceness of the character as Rourke's. But he was brilliant and attained near perfection in my list.
There are a lot of "dames" in this movie - Carla Gugino, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy and a lot other prominent members. But I thought this was more the man's flick than the girls. Though there were some good performances and damn good action scenes, especially Miho (Devon Aoki)the silent assassin of the whore town.
The narration angle of the movie combined with an equally good direction is TOO brilliant, with each of the main characters getting the chance to 'narrate' his way through the story. I thought that was a VERY cool angle as it made the movie more comic-ish. Also the blood, the shoot-outs, the punches and even the car crashes all seem to have been directly ripped of the comic into the 3-D world. You actually feel like you're in the movie and won't feel the 2 hours slip away so calmly.
Don't be put off by the black and white screens. They actually make the movie truly comic-ish. This is a heck lot more than your money's worth. I bet you anything that you'll buy this movie's DVD. AND if you're watching the DVD be careful. The movie has VERY DARK scenes AND some nude scenes packed. This movie is NOT for the weak hearted!Be warned! Oh and just for the statistics, this IS currently #63 in Top 250 movies here at IMDb AND more that 35,500 including me voted 10/10. So there ya go. Everybody loves it. Just watch and throw me a punch if you don't like it. Deal?
