Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
The best family-friendly blockbuster I've seen in years
This isn't anything groundbreaking, but it isn't supposed to be. This movie is two hours of nonstop fun. I'm not sure I could ask for anything more from a summer blockbuster. The Rock does better than I expected at selling the awkward and insecure Spencer. Kevin Hart does a great job blurring the line between straight man and funny man as Fridge. Karen Gillan fits right in, and Jack Black as Bethany is just brilliant.
Give this a watch. It's a funny movie with heart and a great message about believing in yourself and persevering through hardship.
Hereditary (2018)
Bar none, the most terrifying film I've ever seen
I watch a lot of horror movies, so at this point theres not much that gets to me anymore. I don't lose sleep over much. However Hereditary is a different breed of film. This was a slow burn horror like I have never seen. I found myself frequently exhaling from holding my breath for minutes at a time. Where lesser films would rely on cheap jumpscares and loud scores to scare you, Hereditary simply boils, and boils, and boils. There are images and situations in this movie that are not for the faint of heart, and which I'm still having a hard time getting out of my head. Keep in mind, I'm an avid horror viewer, not a lot scares me anymore. By the time the credits rolled on this movie I was sweating, my hands were shaking, and I was out of breath, not even wanting to keep looking at the screen. I have never been physically exhausted from watching a movie before, but Hereditary did it, and for that I commend it.
This is a brilliant horror film and arguably the best post-millenial horror ever made. I would encourage you to give it a watch, but beware, this one will stick with you. There are very upsetting images and moments that some may be unable to handle.
Tiger King (2020)
It's like a train wreck you just can't take your eyes off of
No doubt one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Joe Exotic and his meth-fueled gang of misfits, the Myrtle Beach Zoo cult, and Carole Baskin, the white knight with a shocking secret.
Every episode had my jaw on the floor. This is a story that needs to be told. If you're stuck at home like I am, watch this right now. I promise you won't regret it.
National Treasure (2004)
Perhaps my favorite movie
I have seen this movie at least 25 times and there's not much bad to say about it. It comes in at a clean 2 hours so it's long enough to tell a great story, but not too long. It gives us reasons to care about the characters, the action is well done, there's virtually no swearing and no nudity so it's a great watch with the kids, and if your kids are like I was, it will get them interested in American history!
Overall, this movie will never bore you. I have seen it countless times and every single time it entertains me. Watch this movie!!!
Blade Runner (1982)
Am I missing something?
I made an Imdb account just to leave this review. I was so excited to watch what I've heard many refer to as "the greatest sci-fi film ever made". The only thing keeping this from a 1/10 is the visuals. The atmosphere is great, dystopian Los Angeles reminds me of a vivid terrifying nightmare-scape. Besides that, this is one of the most flat and empty movies I've ever seen. The pacing is never more than a crawl, we are given no reason to care about the characters, and it has the worst quality a film can have: it bored me to tears. A statement could be made that it is not great for its entertainment value, but more so for its philosophical commentary on the future of machines and AI, but the film did an awful job at that as well! I haven't the slightest idea what I'm supposed to have taken from this film.
If one enjoys this for the nostalgia factor, go ahead, but if you're new to sci-fi, do not watch this
Too Long Didn't Read: Great visuals, dull and uninteresting script and characters will bore you to tears. Perhaps the most overrated film in sci-fi history, proceed with caution.
