Kinsey (2004)
10/10
An emotional biography of an underappreciated scientist
6 January 2022
I was introduced to Kinsey through a class about a socio-cultural perspective on sex, something Kinsey would have liked, I am sure. Not to discredit the good teacher that taught the class, but I believe he was sold short in that specific course, and in his recognition in general. Everyone, no matter who, can learn something from this movie and from Kinsey's work. All be it some sort of reassurance.

The movie itself is at times hard to watch, not because the acting is bad or because of technical issues. On the contrary, the cinematography greatly supports the storytelling in the movie. It is sometimes difficult to watch because the content of the movie can be confronting. In a good way. Surprisingly, you will laugh at times. The story is told in such a way that it leaves room to breathe and even laugh. And I would be lying if I said I didn't shed a few tears at the end.

A movie that touches your heart

Simply beautiful. A story so tenderly told, yet powerful and important.

A must watch and an integral part of gay and queer history. It reminds us of how life for gay men once was.

An intriguing and uncomfortable distopia
4 January 2022
Through smart camera work and audio use you are sucked into the story whether you like it or not. And at times you won't. The film offers a dystopian view of the world leaving the viewer uncomfortable but intrigued. While you root for Hanna throughout the movie, she doesn't fully capture your heart. She remains at a distance and purposefully isn't very likeable or relatable.

The acting leaves nothing more to wish for, especially on the part of Cate Blanchett. The ending however does very much disappoint.

If you are looking for a fully realised story where you can sit back and relax, perhaps you should look a little further. If you want a strange, cult-like movie that leaves you with a rather strange feeling, then this movie might be for you.

Endearing but predictable
5 December 2020
Although the plot of the movie is rather predictable the acting of Stewart and Sullavan still holds up. The movie drags a little at some points but in general it keeps a rather decent pace. Some events are a pleasent suprise in the story but they feel a little misplaced. Stewart brings, as always, a certain amount of joy, believability and sensitivity to his character. Sullavan is well casts and performs quite well however in some scenes she lacks a powerfull attitude behind her words. Although a small role, the character development of Pepi, well played by William Tracy, gives a refreshing dimension to the movie.

Some would call this a Christmas movie but I would say that it just so happends to take place around the holidays. Overall a fun and heartwarming but rather typical movie that doesn't surprise very much.

A movie to remember
4 December 2020
"Witness for the Prosecution" is one of those movies that is really worth your time. A genius legal drama that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat, with an outstanding performance of Marlene Dietrich as a strong and cunning leading lady. In every scene she commands the room and pulls focus like no other. Matching her in that energy is Charles Laughton playing a fenomal barrister who takes on what might be the most interesting case of his career. The movie excels at portraying the intricate storyline and keeps the viewer eager to find out what happens next. Definitely a strong recommendation and instantly one of my all time favourite movies.

Also worth mentioning is the loveable role of Miss. Plimsoll played by an endearing Elsa Lanchester.
