Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
"Mrs. Carter, you're a bloody wonder, eminently practical and yet appropriate as always..."
Okay, this was Burton's best movie, this was Depp's best role, but the real scene-stealer TO ME is Helena Bonham Carter.
Sweeney Todd tells a story of vengeance, hate, blood, despair and cannibalism (okay, there is love to, but almost inexistent).
Here we see another Johnny Depp, in another level of acting. He is brilliant. He gave me chills. And he surprised me because I never ever thought that he could sing, and he sang VEEERRRRYYY WEEELLLL! He was not funny like all his other roles, he was mad... he was bloody, and to me, that was the BEST performance of a psycho-vengeful that I've ever seen. Congratulations Mr. Depp, you really scared me.
And in contrast with his bloody humor, we have Mrs. Lovett, portrayed magically by miss Helena Bonham Carter. Man, she was perfect... Helena Bonham Carter gave Mrs. Lovett sweet eyes, and a dark appearance. She was just mad as her platonic lover, Sweeney Todd. But the difference was that Mrs. Lovett still knew how to love. Bonham Carter stole the scene. Her voice was wonderful, especially singing "The worst pies in London". I can't express how thrilled I was. She made me almost cry, and she was able to make the audience know how it is to love someone, and not be loved instead. Every time she stared at Sweeney, we could see how sad and lonely she was, and we even understood why she lied to him...
Everyone congratulated Depp (well deserved), but the real bloody diamond here is Miss Bonham Carter...
As for the movie. Well, nothing much to say... Just that... when I saw it, I felt all the magic of the cinema ounce again, a magic which has been lost since long ago...
Congratulations Tim Burton, you gave a new life and a new hope for us, movie lovers. Thank you!
Pocahontas (1995)
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon...
What can I say... When I was a kid, I didn't like Pocahontas. In fact, I was disappointed with this movie. Because, to me, they HAD to be happy ever after! The years have passed, and I'm 19, and I felt really stupid because I didn't like this movie. Oh my god. This movie wasn't made for children, It was made for grow ups. It's language... a child would never understand the message. A child would just enjoy the animation, Meeko and the songs. When I saw that movie again, 2 years ago, I understood why they couldn't be together, I understood the message of the songs and I understood the fact that this movie is one of the most brilliants animations crated. When I saw "Colors of the wind" I cried. When I heard "Savages!" I got chills. How Disney did that? Kids, don't watch this movie. Grow-ups, GO NOW AND WATCH. This movie teaches values that this world forgot, and we need more movies like that. 10/10
Closer (2004)
Love and madness are slowly intertwined...
Let's see.
The first time I've watched this movie, I felt disgusted. The dialog was poor, Julia Roberts wasn't good on that role. Jude Law was inexpressive. And, ON THE TOP OF FOOD-CHAIN... The scene that Julia and Owen had a couple fight was THE WORSE ever made. But, seeing the Reviews on IMDb, I read a phrase very intriguing... The phrase was almost like that: "Even love isn't pretty from this up-close.". That phrase changed my mind. So, I decided to watch again. And I saw a outstanding romance/drama movie. I saw me there... I think everyone who have watched this movie saw themselves there.
Anna (Julia Roberts) is a self-destructive woman, who simply can't accept love or happiness. Yes, people like her are real.
Alice (Natalie Portman) is a tough, cold but romantic girl. But the problem is that... to her, the love ALWAYS ends, and than... she run away, starting all over again, and again.
Dan (Jude Law) is a loveless man. He can't decide which one he will love, because he suffers from a terrible absence of love.
Larry (Clive Owen) represents the most common love form. He Really loved Anna, and did all for her. He even made the classic mistake of a cheated man.
The characters are brilliant, and the cast was a good choice. You will love this movie, believe me. And by the way, the scene of Julia and Clive couple's fight still pathetic. But still, the rest of the movie will reward you. That's it! Rent and fell it.
The Color Purple (1985)
Just one name: Whoopi Goldberg!
I love Whoopi Goldberg! And when I discovered that "The color purple" was her first role in a movie, I said: "Gosh! She IS a legend!". This movie shows us how humanity can be cruel and merciless, but it show us too how kind we can be. Celie is a black, unlucky, sad, and ugly girl, who has a cruel and despicable father, who sexually arrests her twice (and take her children away). The only person on the world who loves Celie (and vice-versa) is her sister Nettie. But the cruel fate made Celie marries with Mister/Albert (Danny Glover) and her life turns into a sorrowful hell. She is separated from her sister (the most sad scene of the movie), and her happiness seems to end on that moment. I will not tell more about the story, because I don't want to spoil this perfect movie. I saw this film three times, and I cried a river THREE TIMES! Whoopi is Awesome! How can a human being act like her?? To me, she is one of the three legends alive (Meryl Streep and Susan Sarandon are the other two). She STOLE the scene!!! With a brilliant narrative and a fantastic cast, Classic is just one of the infinities adjectives that this film deserves. I have to say one thing. I've never cried with so much joy and satisfaction seeing a movie. "The color purple" is a legend, a classic and the BEST film that Whoopi Goldberg had ever done. Watch it, no matter how it coast, you need to see that!
In Her Shoes (2005)
A beautiful story about love, hate and forgiveness...
First things first. I didn't like Cameron Diaz as an actress. 90% of her movies were brainless...but they were delightful indeed. But in "In her shoes" I saw a TOTALLY different Cameron Diaz. I saw a great actress, maybe her best role in her entire life. The movie tells us a story about 2 sisters, Maggie (Diaz) and Rose (Toni Collette). They are totally different from each other. While Rose is an outstanding Lawyer, responsible and VERY shy, Maggie is a lazy, drunk, irresponsible and a troublesome girl, who wants just spend money (stealing or not) on unnecessary stuffs. The way how they fight, blame, and love each other is really impressive. Cameron and Toni REALLY WERE sisters, and that realism was what made me love this movie. You will laugh, you will cry, you will learn about love, and you will learn about forgiveness. This is one of the most beautiful movie that I've ever seen. Watch, rent, BUY it if necessary... You will not regret, I assure you!
