The Dark Knight (2008)
Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart's confirmation of talent
This is the best film of 2008 (a lot of people says that and it's true).
I finished the film with satisfaction, some unsolved questions and wanting more more of Batman, Joker and Two Face.
The first film I saw from Ledger was A KNIGHT'S TALE, an achronic and funny Middle Age film. People thought that he was going to turn into a new teen star that would make girls shouting but then came Ang Lee's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN about a love story between two cowboys. Critics and people acclaimed this film and Ledger turned (along with his partner in the film Jake Gyllenhaal) into a new promise of acting. He was also a great and funny CASANOVA. It's a shame because he was a great Joker and he did it psychotically AWESOME. We'll miss Ledger but we won't forget that Joker (more different than Nicholson's). The most curious thing is that he worked with the two Gyllenhaal brothers before dying.
Aaron Eckhart was always a secondary role actor and a usual indie film actor. I saw him in THE BLACK DAHLIA and he did right as a mysterious detective and boxer. I was hoping that his Harvey Dent will be better than Tommy Lee Jones ' cartoonish character. And it was better, much better. He put soul and sense to the Gotham City D.A. A very complex character, full of wrath and letting the chances to the destiny. Aaron Eckhart can make a real two-faced character.
The rest of the cast is also great. Christian Bale is definitely the best Batman, Gary Oldman is also brilliant (as always) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (since I saw her in STRANGER THAN FICTION) made a Rachel Dawes different than Katie Holmes. Everything has been said about Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. They are Gods. Their short presence are charming.
The action scenes are really correct and, of course, the epic soundtrack by two 'big guys': James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer.
I also don't forget the participation of the rest of the cast (William Fichtner, Cillian Murphy, Eric Roberts, Anthony M. Hall, Nestor Carbonell, etc).
