Maron (2013–2016)

Worth watching
14 January 2014
It's hard to separate my fandom from WTF and this show to give an honest review, but I'll give it a shot. My initial reaction was to stop after the first episode. Frankly, Marc's acting was a bit hard to watch at times. But knowing his ungodly knack for comfort on the radio, my guess was that he would get better. My patience paid off. You see a mostly steady increase in his confidence as each episode progresses, though I'm not convinced they were all shot in order.

Marc has the ability to both draw you in and annoy you in the same sentence. Gregory House couldn't do this any better. But that is his real life. What might seem like a tense moment for some, as Marc often confronts those friends (and enemies) he has on his podcast, is simply his bread and butter. He operates in a world of bitterness, jealousy, and chaos. He openly admits his frustrations with life and the decisions he makes, yet recognizes his unhealthy habits.

Much of this comes through on the show but in a far less depressing manor. What some may consider as "Hollywooding" (odd thing to say about IFC) Marc's life, I would say is a necessity to making this story watchable.

The cameos (especially for fans of comedians) are another part of the show that lifts what could have been dark and depressing sitcom, into a competent story of a neurotic entertainer. And while this fictional world parallels Marc's life in some ways, it manages to keep it's distance at times.

This is no Louie. It does not try to be. Both shows are very different. Surprisingly, Maron would seem to me more appealing to a broader audience than Louie, though I hate to compare them. Louie's show reaches a level of dark that I think most people will not appreciate, though it obviously has a large following (and yes, I am a fan).

For now, this show belongs on IFC. If Marc's acting continues to improve, Maron could really benefit from a network change. I would encourage everyone to give it a shot (It's on Netflix!), to see if it's right for you.

Dogville (2003)
9/10
Who's the "dog"?
10 November 2004
This movie is a brilliant film which I can only imagine has come from an even more brilliant novel. Dogville shows a wide display of human emotions and capabilities. Moods change from fear to love, to contempt, to hatred, and finally into a state of incompassion which reaches beyond human nature. Or does it? What Dogville so accurately chronicles is the capability of mankind under certain situations to be cruel, without empathy. These same feelings of hatred, when combined with feelings of inferiority and superiority, create relationships like history has displayed through slavery and hate crimes, the side of human nature that we don't want to see.

Dogville is told in a simplistic "story book" fashion which parallels a fable or more accurately....a parable. Countless morals are revealed, some open and easy to interpret, while others are harder to understand. But it is surprisingly difficult to view much of this film. It sickens me to my stomach to see humans act this way, but they are not beyond our capability.

The thing to think about in the end is whether Grace gave into the hatred, reverted to her human nature, played God, or simply taught the world a lesson. A lesson that she had just, in fact, learned herself.

The Sea Wolf (1941)
5/10
Choppy, inconsistant, but not too bad.
4 July 2004
This movie grabbed my attention from the start, especially, being a Jack London novel. Edward G. Robinson is a phenomonal actor. He along with Gene Lockhart, deliver strong performances. The rest of the cast is lacking however. The characterization is terrible for most parts, especially the love interests. Towards the end it is tidious and boring, until the final scene. Some decent cinemetography for the year, and kudos for attempting this movie in a very dark manner. It somehow manages, however, to be entertaining. But, it is obvious much is left out, which leaves you unsatisfied...ie....Wolf's brother (or his absence). Watch it anyway to see what you think.

Oh my goodness....

I haven't even seen this movie, and I can already tell that it has got to be the worst movie ever made. However, my friends and I have had such a great time making fun of the preview, that maybe it is worth something...a good laugh.

K-PAX (2001)

Genius.
5 November 2003
Warning: Spoilers
It is always disheartening for me to hear terrible reviews on a movie, only later to watch in awe as it evolves into something beautiful. It is sad (in my opinion) that everyone has somehow missed the point here. I will admit I have a bias to what I refer to as a "moralist" picture, That is, a movie with an underlying plot that somehow brings a character to a greater enlightening. Though K-pax's moral is not deeply hidden, I believe it has not yet been completely grasped, at least by the reviews I wasted my time reading. It's true, this movie is not for the A.D.D. as it can be slow at times, but never boring. Bridges and Spacey are at their best, especially the hypnotizing scenes, and both are underrated.Ok, here it is, the part I like......

Warning! Spoilers!

What keeps our interest is the ongoing "is it true, or isn't it" debate. At times you think it must be, and as the story unfolds it appears false. It flips you around from time to time often making you wonder how in the world can they end this.

Well what I didn't catch until the very end is that not only had Prot taken the body of Porter, but he had specifically taken Porter's body for Dr. Powell's purposes. Thus the unusual knowledge about the doctor at their first meeting. The unfortunate circumstances that afflicted Porter were what Prot used to affect Powell. If Powell hadn't found out about Porter's past, he never would have realized how much he had taken for granted his own family, and reconciled with his son. It is interesting to recall Prot's statement about soap bubbles. Prot became Powell's soap bubble; he took the form that was necessary for not only Powell's healing, but also many others in the psych ward.

I put a heavy priority on family. Dr. Powell's neglect of his own, could have been the downfall of his second marriage, instead we are led to believe he has been awakened. Though the Sci-Fi aspect is tough to let in, it is effective. Maybe this one goes out to the work-aholic with a family at home.

Detention (I) (1998)

Bad acting...worse writing...genius idea
23 October 2003
If I were to give this almost-worthless waste of time any sort of credit, it would be that someone finally wrote what a lot of teachers out there have been thinking and feeling for decades. I will admit, I had this one pegged for another B version "Dangerous Minds" or "Stand and Deliver." But no, this movie doesn't deliver anything but a good shock for about 10 minutes. After that, the worthlessness sets in and I couldn't seem to get past the high school drama team they hired to "act" in this movie. At times, the script is so corny that this movie makes the "Jason" movies look like literary works of genius. Also, the pacing is terrible (I fell asleep, if that's any hint). The use of nudity is odd and unconventional; I can't seem to decide whether it is fighting social biases against male nudity, or if the director is simply fascinated with the male organ. Either way, it is disturbing.

If Hollywood would hire a REAL director, have the screenplay completely rewritten, and find a decent set of actors and actresses, there MIGHT be something good about the plot line.

(Side note: I do give credit where it's due.....the soundtrack is fitting as it creates not only disturbance on-screen but almost gave me psychological issues.) 3 out of 10
