The G Word with Adam Conover (2022)
disappointing follow up to ARE
First episode should say it all: Adam Conover gets snug with Obama. Oh boy: will anything Adam presents not be complete trash fed straight from system democrats?
ARE was smart funny and obnoxious.
G word is... obnoxious and biased. In episode 3 or 4 he comes right out and says "i'm an Athiest" and then continues to praise the government workers for doing their jobs. A true product of the system.
I'm happy that government workers are happy with their jobs, that's not really the issue at hand. People have problems with the government because most frequently there is red tape everywhere and it doesnt work and our money is just wasted at every turn, benefetting corporations. Just look at the USFS. Yes these workers are helpful and rightfull mostly paid decent to well. But when theres a fire, middle to upper-level workers from all over the US go there and stay in hotel rooms with only a 10% discount given. So the USFS pays $100-$200 a night per person. WHAT? No stories like that in this series. A few "what about" moments but then Adam cheerfully defends the government at every turn. Total tool.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Season 6 is inauthentic
S1-5 are great. Full of drama, comedy, clever twists and character + relationships development. Interesting story lines, cool cinematography, overall a really fun and creative show.
S6.... Feels completely different. It feels tense, the mood is dark, the lighting is dark, the small amounts of humor are feigned. The cinematography is overdone like art-school. The pacing is slow and artificially drawn out. I'm guessing the dimly lit scenes are to hide how much the actors have aged in two years, but its just not necessary (we get it).
Look, we know where Jimmy ends up. But this giant cloud of darkness is an overreach. Jimmy is one who accepts the weight of his actions but does so with humor and intelligence, and has enough faith in himself to get what he wants.
Kim's plot line is completely divergent to who we know her to be. I can see her being annoyed with Howard but there is no truth in her actions this season. With Jimmy as her sidekick, there is no truth in his actions either. Both characters have arced into fraudulent writing.
All of the above considered, its a disappointing ending to a previously great show.
Cobra Kai (2018)
half quality, half meh
I love the storyline of the senseis and their new relationships with the kids in the dojo. Really warm and sincere. The tongue in cheek commentary on the hyper-sensitivities of todays woke-ness + political correctness is great.
The flashbacks to the 80s get in the way. 80s hair-rock music, annoying. The two main characters feel like has-beens with all the reminiscing that happens. I skip those parts and enjoy the rest of it.
Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020)
Violent
I'm genuinely interested in this piece of history and think the producers and directors could have chosen to make it less violent and gory. I understand wars a violent and gory but you dont have to show it all. I didn't need to see two actual heads in a bag for five seconds to understand people were beheaded.
Editing is so rushed and sloppy. As im reading the qualifications + titles of the person being interviewed, it quickly cuts to more b-roll of bloody fighting. Not enough time to read information presented on screen,
No thanks.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
trash
Iris was allegedly boarding a plane in a yellow dress when everyone else is wearing expedition gear?
Im sorry, you live in the arctic and go underwater, you are dead. dead in the water or from hypothermia.
ugh this movie is so contrived. no heart, no brain.
just bad.
Bridgerton (2020)
the fantasy couldnt save it from the bad everything
I went in blind, and very quickly figured out its a fantasy. ok
if the writers and producers went to all this trouble to make something never seen before, then they must commit to their ideas.
so, put some black people in royalty positions, ok, you have my attention. but what are you going to DO with this unique situation? these creators chose to do nothing. everything in the writing has been done a million times. no chemistry between anyone on camera. no compelling drama.
this series, with its inclusive casting and colorful costumes, missed its chance to do something fun by taking itself too seriously. hard pass.
The Office (2005)
Steve Carrell
I tried watching this when it first aired and couldn't get into it.
FF to 2020 and I started with season 7 and onto 8 & 9 and went back to 1.
I cannot stand Michael Scott / Steve Carrell at all. The most obnoxious character of all time. I'd give seasons 7,8,9 = 9/10 stars so many great moments and hilarious episodes. Season 1 i give zero stars... and am doubtful I'll try the other seasons that include Michael Scott.
Down to Earth with Zac Efron (2020)
Darin's know it all ruins it
Was really looking forward to this series. I love Zac's authenticity, his interest, and his sense of humor.
But why is this exec producer Darin Olien buddying around? I find him completely overbearing. A know-it-all who takes the fun out of the discovery from both Zac and the viewer. I'm happy that he was able to inspire Zac to do the series, but so many of the episodes feel like Darin is trying to make it the Darin show.
Creepy old white dude, don't 'bro' me. Hard pass.
Supersonic (2016)
Oasis energy
Wow. As a mega fan in the 90s, and still following them despite my taste in music changing over the years, I will always come back to Oasis. These guys radiate energy from their core and the people just soak it up and exude it back to the band. This took me back to all their shows, Liam's stances, the crowd, jumping as a whole in unison, to. every. single. song. that could be jumped to. Love the archival footage. The audio clips of last ten minutes had me tearing up. After the internet, live music has never been like this. No one could touch Oasis. The last truly great mega-band. If you saw them live in the 90s, that is an experience that will go unmatched. This doc captured their energy perfectly.
The Invention of Lying (2009)
TMI isnt the same as Lying
Not disclosing every thought that enters your mind isn't the same as lying. Couldnt get past the second scene.
Floor Is Lava (2020)
SHOUTING ALL THE TIME
The contestants shout at each other, they shout to them selves, even the host shout-splains to the viewer who clearly cant understand that the FLOOR IS LAVA
production needs to take it down a level
We Are Your Friends (2015)
one good scene
When Zac takes the PCP at the art party... and then wakes up.
cool animation, looked really good with the music.
its a shame this idea wasnt revisited.
the scene where they're being trained to do "real estate" had a smart alecky feel to it... completely out of place right after the pcp scene.
its like the director got scared of the his most interesting ideas.
100 Humans (2020)
fun show
What a fun idea, have innocent experiments on people to see how they react. This is completely tongue in cheek, and the gags may be on the viewers hating on this because its 'unscientific'. The hosts are comedians, the Humans are a huge variety of people, and the experiments are often completely contrived. So great. Made by fun people for fun people!
Merlin (1998)
I would rate this PG13
The following review is to help parents decided if their kids should watch this movie
Positive Messages:
Merlin and Nimue's relationship is innocent and pure. Merlin always returns to her because he loves her. She lets him go because she loves him.
Sex: 3/5 maybe 4/5
There are a few (3) scenes where sex is suggested and couples are shown embracing, couples frequently shown kissing. One scene shows the shape (in candle wax) of bodies embracing and the shape of a woman's face during sex. Talk of lust, talk of love.
Themes of love and lust are throughout the film. Two female leads have heavy sexy makeup on. One scene a king sits Queen Mab on his lap and is suggestive towards her.
Language: 1/5
Use of words like "Lust" in conversation
"Suicide" to describe action
Violence 3/5
Violence is depicted during two war scenes with swords. One scene a man pushes his sword through another's body and there is blood, and the two men continue to talk as they die. One man kills himself with his sword.
Queen Mab uses magic to kill other women, is indifferent about death. Morgan La Fay says that "Nothing ever lasts".
3-4 year old throws a dagger at Mab's head.
Scary images: Queen Mab
Consumerism: None
Drinking Drugs Smoking: Drinking alcohol - 1 scene
The Goop Lab (2020)
Can't add to the hate
I'm shocked to see so many hateful reviews from people who very likely didn't watch the show.
As someone who finds value in spiritual healing modalities, I give this show a 6/10. For the way the show is presented, the production value and editing, I give it a 4/10. It does miss the mark - the way things are presented (as a visual story) feels very sterile; true healing is anything but sterile. The way people are interviewed feels insincere and un-interesting, a kind of continued droning from the production. Overall the show lacks heart and depth, leaving a lot of room for a poor review.
What I DO LIKE about this show is that it allows the uninitiated (including the one star reviewers) to get their toes wet, to see ways people are healing, to learn how unlimited the human body can be, to see how we can free ourselves.
It would be interesting if Gwenyth included low-income and middle class folks as clients of the various healers she meets. Something a little more practical and relatable for those of us not made of money.
Roadies (2016)
lame boring and predictable
As an avid concert-goer who has worked in radio and film production, this show just stinks. characters lack depth, the editing and scene pacing is questionable. everything is formulaic. why add in two full songs per episode? the characters are obsessed with name-dropping pasee 'legends". YAWN. for a group of people who are supposed to be so cool and interesting, they are totally lame, boring and one-dimensional. no chemistry between the actors, the stories fell flat and were thinly veiled.
this could have worked as a thirty minute show. cut out the drama and stick to writing good, sincere jokes about the music industry. there's so much great real-life music-industry material to choose from, cameron crowe is nothing more than uninspired.
Whatever It Takes (2000)
but i love you bryan ryan!
hah this movie has soooo many one liners, i cant even begin to tell you how funny it is. im telling you, the humor involved is awesome. to classify this movie as a "teeny bopper" flick or anything like that would be a terrible understatement. i have seen teen- chick flicks. no no no . THIS one takes the cake. rent it and watch it with your friends and laugh. cos its funny.
