Sometimes you get more than you bargained for
14 April 2004
I watched this little picture off a friend's recommendation who knows I'm a sucker for love stories. I can't help it, I am that hopeless romantic that everybody laughs about. At first I was so turned off by Steve, (male lead) and his overall attitude toward women. He was everything in a man that I dislike, so much I wanted to turn off the film - but that was the filmmakers point. Just in the knick of time, before I could find my remote, Steve is reunited with the female lead, Amy, and he's thrown an unexpected curve ball due to her current circumstances. We've seen this formula done so many different ways in motion pictures, (learning to accept someone's inner beauty) and this attempt was very well executed. There are a few fun cameo appearances, as well, (read the cast list). I'm glad I watched through it.

Overrated, Yet Underrated
14 April 2004
I must say that if you missed this motion picture in the theaters, you truly missed out. It was an amazing special that left you realizing WHY they invented movie theaters in the first place. If you've read the series of books, Master and Commander, you were left frustrated that they left out so much. Again, its a two-plus hour movie, so I understand. I went with some friends that did not read the books and they were very confused about a lot of things. All in all, it was great to see it as a film and considering how many films-from-books get slammed about the differences, this was no John Grisham, The Firm - type let down. Russell Crowe did an amazing job and it's unfortunate he was overlooked by the Academy this year, but I guess Sean Penn has been due for some time now - I'm just glad he was there to get his Oscar.

THIS got the Oscar?

Okay, I get it - Michael Moore is outspoken, tells it like HE wants us to see it and he's a master of that craft. I have seen a lot of documentaries in my twenty-two years on this planet, so I can put my hands on my hips and cluck like chicken about how obvious it was that there was a popularity contest at Oscar's in 2003 when this film was selected, but then again, it was well executed. Maybe I'm just upset about how Michael Moore used THAT platform to express his political views that night, (I know, I know - enough already) but he is truly a unique and gutsy filmmaker. I do look forward to seeing more of his films in the past and it will be interesting to see if they 'nominate' his next film weather or not Oprah endorses it, with fear of what he might say or do on stage. At any rate, keep up the good work.

A shame I was 10 years too late.

My older sister rented this for us to watch one night and I had heard about it, but was not too excited to see it. I laughed my pony-tail off and watched it again as soon as it was over. I wish to God that I was around when this film was popular, I can only imagine the effect that it had on young viewers starting their high school lives with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Great that it was based off of Cameron Crowe's book, which Fast Times, obviously was a BIG push for him. The characters were all likable and I could still relate to so many of the things that happened on screen, hit home - even almost twenty years after the fact, (and three for me). This will go down as one of my all time favorites and I look forward to having children of my own so I can share this one day with them. Heck, the day before they START high school.
