Impossible not to love it
22 April 2005
If you still think someone could not be invested by the modernity of this captivating gem from Lubitsch and his famous touch I have the Final proof.I showed this movie last week to my mother who came at my place without anyone inviting (eheh..I'm kidding..as well as she pays..she can come!!:P),she is reportedly ignorant about movies (especially GOOD movies) but she completely fell in love with this one.She stole my DVD and she told me she's gonna show it to all her friends, and I'm so angry that I'm not gonna see this scene cause I bet it's gonna be awfully funny."high-bourgeoisie housewives" vs Lubitsch,oh men,I wanna be there...:)))If they're gonna like it too,This movie could be definitely considered as a miracle:))))

The Red Shoes (1948)

don't think is the usual musical-full of ballet with people singing all the time...
27 March 2005
This movie is really something. That could be just a scene to explain it:when Lermontov invites her at the castle where all the producers are to tell her the role is hers. It's such an exaggerated way to tell it!and then, why in the night?and in a castle?but the incredible elegance and the colors(that strange kinda of blue of the first Technicolor)make it so believable,it's not the dream that becomes true, but the opposite.Nothing to do with the usually musical, also because this is not a musical! All the dance number(2 maybe three)are all filled on a context(in the theater)so you don't feel like "what the hell are they doing now?"and they are directed in such a modern way(there's a relent too!)that makes you says like "Wow".It's wrong to call it a musical or a ballet movie, the ballet has here the role which usually as "the other man" in the romantic comedies. And what about the end?I'm not talking about the fall, but of the wax)any "Dramatic" plot will pay for that.

Holden and Hepburn Affair started here
4 March 2005
when someone can pass from "Sunset Boulevard" to "Sabrina" like that,he's not someone,he's Billy Wilder!Holden is Marvellous (how come no nomination?)his co star/lover Hepburn even more,Bogey is OK but once you know that his role was thought for Cary Grant can't make you stop thinking "what if.." But the result is anyway brilliant, definitely.I was very skeptic about love comedy but this movie made me understand how smart can a romantic movie be and how can easily be compared,in quality and in memorable quotes, with every movie,if it's well-done,as this one. Gossip corner:Holden left Audrey 'cause she told him she couldn't have baby.Bad move Bill, bad move.

You wish you could change channel..but there's Ava and Robert!!!

I saw this movie more than any other movie ever..No I'm not sick ,is just that this is a classic of private television and it's programmed at least once a month..so!The First time I saw it, I was ten,I already understood that was something absurd in the plot, like they had to invent something to take apart hot Ava and lusty Mitchum until the end and so there's all that absurd affair between his ugly cousin and the Rita Hayworth of the poor man wife. The lines of Mitchum are one more cynic than the other (not for nothing he was Mitchum!),Ava is beautiful ,the clothes of the two girls too and..that's all! This movie makes really no sense .I'll give a 5,just because of How am I affectioned to it,but it's a clear 3

Finally,"A- MOVIE"
30 January 2005
I must warn you no one knows who the hell is Topher Grace in Italy, and I guess laura linney and Marcia gay harden as well, not to talk about Dilan Kidd,so I went to see this movie in Venice film festival five months ago and with a lot of probability was the best one I saw there.First of all the setting:I don't know, that's something "right" in it,the town, the university,Louise's house,it was all very "well placed",then Laura Linney:how good is her performance I can't tell. Its' not something stunning or whatever,is not Gloria Swanson I mean,it's very quiet ,in Italian we says "sotto Le righe" and that's why it's so good,it's something better and different form natural,it's just that no one else could have been Louise as she did, that's it!Topher grace it's gorgeous and he should sue the Italian guy who dubs of his voice in the 70's cause it's just garbage,I think his voice it's very warm and remarkable and represent him so much,I mean he must be one of this guy you like to talk on the phone, and to see personally,of course :).As an actor it's probably the only actor alive in America who doesn't use the "method" and god bless him for that!we will hear of him again. And again again again and again.I bet it!

Mah!

Without a plot. Without any idea of cinema or common sense. Impossible to watch without feeling embarrassed for them. Can Roger Moore deal with the fact he was in it? It's not even enough funny- or better, is not funny at all- to become a "cult".It's just filthy garbage who can be justified just with the fact that some actors in the cast -and the "director" too- probably needed to pay the rent. a LOT . And the girls? "like to shot on the red cross".Left me so speechless I can't even fill the ten lines ,maybe I should just report the reactions of the public-age average:15 years- who started to shout and to destroy the sits of the theater like not even on that scene of "Ed Wood",which movies were, compared to this- pretty good .

Rushmore (1998)

more rushmore
7 December 2004
I saw this movie on TV some months ago and since the begin I was thrilled, absolutely. The use of the music is here nothing to envy to Tarantino's one,Wes Anderson on his almost-thirty already had a stile, which is stunning if you think that other directors spend years finding the way to give a movie their own print.I don't know how can someone not like this movie, but anyway no one can deny it's wonderfully written.the scene of the swimming pool party it's amazing.the colors of the water still remains in my head. And how it changes during bill murray's changing. If you liked the tennenbaums,(but even if you didn't!)u will love Rushmore. For me,one of the most underrated movies ever.

nobody never went so high

for the high quality and the success ,Billy Wilder is to me the greatest director ever.He was probably the first (and only) director to make "smash-hit masterpiece" among all the great directors ever no one as him found so much public glory.Look at his film:none of them is dated,(as capra one's for example). The role of miss swanson was first gave to mae west which refused but gloria accepted and she really made a herself wonderful biography, cause the relationship with von stroehim was(almost)really the one described in the movie. Can you believe the initial scene was actually filmed in the early 50?so innovative,if you think that there were the years of doris day movies too,well.... a scene is always in my hearth:when Holden and the girl are walking down the studios and she starts to tell him about her nose-job.I found it so modern,so true and so acid in a certain way,but everything is to mention in this movie cause every sequence is amazing(the visit at the studio, the card game with buster keaton, the first year eve party...)I don't have so much DVD cause I use to buy DVD of only movies I will love too see over and over again. That's one of it. claudia

I always thought that the real point of this movie,I mean what made it the real classic that we all know and that we all should be proud of know,is that the subtle critic to the war is made by two characters which are not too normal young fellows just thinking about sex and superficial dispute, but two surgeons, two professional men, which are in the position to do what they do and to act the way they act, even the most outrageous or ridiculous moment(think about the kimono scene in the japan hospital) don't took away from them any credibility .80% of the movie is improvised, the perfect chemistry between the "yet unknown" Gould and Sutherland(oh men,how undervalued is this actor??)it's something you may found once every 200 movie,Altman has a classy but strong touch even when he deal with death (the last supper) guess I don't know if they had more fun doing it or seeing it.Funny in the real sense of the word, not hysterical ,irreverent, not polemic.A masterpiece

Edwards touch at its best
16 October 2004
the best comedy of the eighties.Brilliant, funny, grotesque, noir, dramatic, all these stiles mixed greatly thanks to an almost perfect script(nothing to do with the comedy of the last 20 years, based on a simple "situation" which exhaust itself after 20 minute)and a great and ironic Julie Andrews on a parody of herself and of her career-which has been less shiny of what it deserved to be-,not to forgive all the other actors, william holden overall in his last stage, but also the great "double Oscar winner" shelley winters and "J.R." Larry Hagman. An irresistible film full of ideas and definitely rich of style and elegance, with something which is almost impossible to find in nowadays movies:an atmosphere

La terrazza (1980)
guess you guy didn't understand that much
26 September 2004
Boring???maybe for who doesn't know or understand the Italian situation of the early eighties, and that typical attitude of the left-side radical chic inhabitants of Rome.I do,and I appreciated this movie a Lot.Scola fails so rarely, and this wasn't the case.A great cast made a great movie, probably one of the last successful "Italian comedy" ever.Everything works fine, from the narrative stile of the director, which shows once again how well he can deal with a crowded set,to the script, written as always by himself.Gassman and Satta Flores above all.I wish this movie was more known abroad,24 years are past, but it never lost its taste, still actual and ironic as it should be
