The Killer (2023)
Quite dull and empty
Is this David Fincher we're talking about? You know, the director of films like 'Seven' (1995), 'The Game' (1997), 'Fight Club' (1999), and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' (2008)? Unfortunately, 'The Killer' (2023), a story of a hired killer seeking revenge, is quite dull and empty.
Apart from Michael Fassbender's performance, there is nothing interesting about this character. Who is this guy, and why should we care about him? If he's so brilliant, capable of intricate plans, why hasn't he successfully started a business and become wealthy, instead of wasting his life in such a peculiar way?
When it comes to 'hired killer' movies, Jean-Pierre Melville's classic noir film 'Le Samourai' (1967) comes to mind first. Here, we witness the tragedy of a man who, having entered the world of crime, finds himself unable to choose any other path. Don Siegel's intriguing film 'The Killers' (1967) and Michael Winner's best work, 'The Mechanic' (1972), explore the inevitable fate of a hitman (Charles Bronson) involved in a criminal network. Many other films can be remembered, but unfortunately, 'The Killer' is not one that can be mentioned alongside them, and it doesn't suit David Fincher's filmography. It's a waste of the talented cast.
Now, let's think outside the box. The Killer (Michael Fassbender) is an ordinary man working a boring office job, struggling to make ends meet and dreaming of touristy travels with his wife. They argue constantly due to their limited income. The man comes up with a plan to escape this life by writing a bestselling thriller novel. Moreover, if the novel gets adapted into a film, he'll become very rich. He starts writing, envisioning a highly professional hitman, which turns out to be none other than himself, patiently waiting in Paris for the right moment to shoot his target. Suddenly, the members of the criminal organization in the novel are revealed to be his mundane office colleagues. The merciless work environment becomes the foundation for the criminal world in the novel. As the story progresses, the man starts having paranoid fantasies. Could it be that his office colleagues have hired a hitman to kill him because he used them in his novel?
The director could have effectively portrayed the hardships people face in their lives to make a living, the troubles they encounter, and the dilemmas they find themselves in with this tragicomic story.
In conclusion, this film was a disappointing letdown for me.
Vahsi Gelin (1978)
Cute remake of the French romantic comedy Le Sauvage (1975)
This a hurried Remake of the French romantic comedy Le Sauvage (1975) from Jean-Paul Rappeneau, who is a master of this genre. A Novelist needs a quiet place for writing his new masterpiece... And a Bride runs from her Bridegroom and his piqued family just after her engagement. The Novelist and the Bride meeting on a Island near Istanbul. Soon enters the hot Bridegroom and his family to the Island with tumultuous results. Not a bright example of superior film-making but often funny and watchable... Gülsen Bubikoogu who plays here the runaway Bride was a Queen of romantic flicks trough 1970's in Turkey. Cüneyt Arkin and Tarik Akan, two handsome and very skilled actors were often her screen partner.
