Greenland (2020)
Saved by 1 performance
I was going to give it 6 due to the plot issues (as others have said, you keep saying to yourself "Why???") but found the child / young man's acting to be really good and authentic so bumped up the score.
Worth a watch.
The Secrets of Quantum Physics (2014)
Good and enjoyable.
Don't understand even half of it but good documentary. My head is spinning. :-)
It would have been better to cover some of the areas in a bit more detail in a third episode.
Soul Men (2008)
Laughed all the way
On learning about the controversy and tragedy surrounding this movie, it is very sad.
However, the movie itself is thoroughly enjoyable and very well made. Great acting and music. Must see.
Clara (2018)
Enjoyable
Good, authentic acting. Good character development. Grounded enough in reality to make it plausible (but highly unlikely).
Mononoke-hime (1997)
Nice but could be better
I really liked the animation and the overall story concept as well as the main protagonist. However it was marred by a confusing story line and an unsatisfying ending.
What was most confusing as to why Ashitashi was supporting the Lady right till the end even though she was the one causing the most havoc. It is good that he wanted peace but he was all over the place and I am not sure whether he helped or hindered.
There was also too many tribes / clans in the story with no background to help the viewer understand how they overall fit / are relevant.
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Amazing
Rarely does a movie come together so perfectly in all aspects like this one.
- Stellar cast, including God himself. What more can we ask for?
- Authentic, genuine acting.
- Great story, with sad twists and turns.
Overall, an amazing job well done.
Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019)
Good anime
There is plenty to like about this anime.
- Good animation.
- Imaginative villains.
- Good story / pacing.
- Emotive background of demons shared after they die is sad and touching.
What prevents it from becoming truly great in my humble opinion:
- Setting the stage: Episode 1 for demon slayer would be 6/10 vs. 10/10 for Attack on Titan. Not enough effort is made to lay out the scene before the carnage begins. The initial attacks are not shown and we go straight to dead bodies / interaction with demon slayers.
- Not enough effort made to explain the background of the teacher. He wears a mask all the time, making it harder to like him.
- Aside from the sister, I do find the side characters annoying / too loud.
Goblin Slayer (2018)
Ok
The premise / background is interesting and draws you in. Unfortunately, the story never really develops and the characters are sort of one dimensional.
The hero keeps his helmet / armour on the entire time like a five year old wearing his spiderman costume. The supporting characters are mainly beautiful women, portrayed as weak, needing his help and falling for him (which he fails to notice).
There are some good fight scenes but sort of predictable. There is also an awful lot of repetition of major scenes (like waking up in the morning, checking the fields, the girl making breakfast, going to the market and so on).
It would have been so much better if they could have included scenes from his formative years / struggle before he practically became unbeatable as a goblin slayer.
Mugen no jûnin: Immortal (2019)
Good anime. Some imperfections stop it from being great
Rich, complex storyline with violence matching AOT, Blade of the Immortal does not immediately draw you in from episode 1. Stick with it, however and there are moments of anime magic.
Violence (of all types) is extreme and not for the faint hearted. Another good thing is the a good number of secondary characters whose story line develop over the season.
My main criticisms are:
- No effort to explain the background, context etc. of what we are watching, the timeline and history of the era.
- Fight sequences seemed very artificial in the beginning, even for anime. It was almost like the each fight was cut short to show the viewer the start and the end. This did improve over time.
- Too many side characters will little or no introduction to help understand how they fit into the story.
- The protagonist is too powerful and quite a few of the initial fights were very predictable / boring. This did improve in the end.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Batman fans rejoice. Superman fans-prepare to be disappointed.
It is really evident that the writer of Argo has also been involved in the script for this movie. He has given his pal a wonderful role. Batman is the only one who has a consistent and meaningful role in the entire movie. He gets to defeat Superman, save Clark's mom and also live to let the tale of the fight with Doomsday. What more could Batman ask for?
Superman on the other hand, flies around like an alien completely detached and lost in his own thoughts. The scene at the US Senate is hilarious. Superman flies in, does not say a single word, everything blows up and then Superman flies off.
Superman's first encounter with Batman is also incredibly stupid. Batman chasing Lex's truck with Kryptonite. Superman suddenly appears and wrecks his car and asks him to stand down. He does not stop to ask what was Batman chasing and why? He does not show any interest in the cargo itself (a 80% destroyed truck gunning it at full speed). Superman is truly made to appear as all brawn and no brains.
For me, the most unforgiven act is the fight with Doomsday. It is one of the all time highlights of Superman's career where he makes the ultimate sacrifice. In the comic books (and in the animated movie), it is made clear why that needs to be done. No one else could stop him. No green rock, nobody except Superman. This was never done in this movie. We are made to believe that Lex's blood is so toxic that it made General Zod into Doomsday. Only Zack could go with such nonsense. For the sake of the idea of Justice League, Wonder Woman and Batman were introduced into the fight and Superman spends about 50% of the time laying injured and down on the ground, without any one-to-one fighting with Doomsday
The fight sequence of Superman and Doomsday has too many disruptions. What was the point of introducing the nuclear missile? It beggars belief that action was interrupted time and time again. What was wrong with showing a live action version of what was in the comics or the animated movie (or as close to it as possible)? For 90% of the audience, they would be seeing it for the first time and for the rest, it would be a real thrill to watch it from a different perspective.
It is the same as Warner making a Harry Potter movie and the director insisting on changing a key scene in the movie to be different from the book.
The DC movie franchise is cursed. We are doomed to be disappointed again and again.
