Midway (2019)
Closer to a documentary than a movie
I came knowing nothing about the battle of Midway and now I have a basic understanding. That's all the movie is going to do for you. Which, is a good offer for me since I like learning history.
But as a movie it's a disaster:
CGI does it job to show what it happened, but it's very unrealistic. Just like an animation in a documentary.
Storywise, this movie is all over the place. It has so much background that it seems like a movie about the WW2 in the pacific with the battle of Midway as a climax, but the battle of Midway didn't ended the war so it feels weird.
Emotionally, you don't connect with any character at all. You don't spend enough time with any of them, don't get to know them personally.
This movie made me appreciate even more the Nolan's movie Dunkirk.
Blackhat (2015)
Interesting but...
It's a quite interesting movie, definitely worth watching, but:
I didn't care about the main character's relationship so the drama around it felt boring.
Action scenes didn't look as good as they could.
A few things felt off storywise: Too much US-China cooperation and to little FBI-NSA cooperation. An inmate they are consulting with seems to be the lead investigator instead of being in an office exclusively using his expertise. At some point the bad guy tries to kill the only guy that can return him his money.
Exam (2009)
Really good concept, really bad else
The concept is really interesting: there's a question to be answered but it's not clearly stated, they have to collaborate and/or compete to figure it out. The characters were extremely exaggerated and they didn't seem worried about the time running out. Acting was good.
The Last Thing He Wanted (2020)
What happend?
I'm usually the guy that understands the movie on the fly and gets asked about it by the other. This movie made me feel stupid. I had to google an explanation of the movie, and still makes no sense to me.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
It is what it looks
It's not at all the kind of movie that I like but at least it's not been painful to watch.
It puts you in the place of the main characters and you empatice with them.
Ex Machina (2014)
Great
I think that it is the best movie at showing how an AI can be dangerous.
The end make me feel frightened just for how incredibly intelligent she is. And that is the weirdest fear I've ever had and I love the concept.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Very good
It's a good Tarantino film.
Simple concept nicely executed.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
No plot, good scenes and acting
The has no apparent plot.
It turns out that you have to know about some killins that a guy named Charlie Manson plotted at that time, make sure to learn about that before watching the movie. And that only improves the movie the first time you watch it.
On the bright side the performances of the actors are perfect and there are four scenes that I absolutely love.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Old
By its time it may have been amazing to see science fiction but now it's not worth it.
Too slow, even for its time.
It has no plot and the ending make no sense whatsoever.
The only interesting thing is the AI vs. human conflict which is not very deep.
The Theory of Everything (2014)
Excellent acting,
The main actors couldn't have made it better.
The different storylines are not well integrated. The introductions of new storylines/topics feel to sharp at times.
It's a good movie worth watching, but, while it is the biography of a scientist, it is not a movie about the history of science.
