Brilliant all around

My wife and I both thought performances were so real that we were not watching actors. The story of this young artist moves along at a pace that you sometimes just don't want to stop. The colours vibrant to plain matched to the scenes involved. It was not magic but clever writing that Ivan's father's final play for the season was to be "Romeo and Juliet" . We just loved this movie.

Editing mess
2 October 2018
The setting jumps from snow covered winter streets to Fall leaf covered lawns and streets. The flashbacks aren't defined enough to have viewers aware and figure out later in the film. The 3 of us that watched were confused and then distracted by the shifting time of year. The plausibility of the cars owned by the characters was not believable.

Itialian Film Noir

I had this on my list on Netflix because we are headed to Rome in the spring. Thought we would see some on the Roman sights but this is NOT "3 Coins in a Fountain". It is an excellent movie...very good acting, interesting but not likable characters, fascinating story line. I would not normally recommend a movie where almost all the characters are anti- heroes. The pacing and interesting camera shots move the movie along and we really could not stop watching. My wife and I both really liked this film. It involves much of what we think of as the disreputable portions of many great cities; politicians, gangs and their rivals, organized crime and even the church. I was surprised that no major US critics reviewed the movie which is a shame. It is very good, gritty film making.

A terrible movie!!!

...and this is from a Woody Allen fan. I get the fact that people get famous for being famous and that Rome is a beautiful city. I now also get that either all these actors cannot act or that Mr. Allen has lost touch with writing and directing. Watch "Midnight in Paris","Annie Hall", "Manhattan" or "Hannah and Her Sisters"; but don't waste your time with this film. Mr. Baldwin was good as the "conscious for Mr. Eisenberg but the other players were either flat or overboard. If that was the point it did not play well. The story is contrived and too cutesy to be either believable or a fantasy. Even the "little" plot twists were very predictable. A rating of 4 is generous.

Life of Pi (2012)

should have waited for video

Finally went to theatre in order to view on the big screen but was very disappointed. The CGI effects were just OK in my book; the story certainly did not move me emotionally; and while pretty to watch it held no great moments that were believable. Whale sharks are spectacular but this one just didn't fit; it was just one more "effect" thrown in to an effect filled movie. The best director award was a joke. Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow or Ben Affleck were far more deserving. Don't bother paying for tickets just watch at home for free. The "Academy" seems to have something against Spielberg and I think that snubbing Affleck for even getting nominated, in spite of winning all other director awards, shows a lack of respect for his work. All in all "Life of Pi" was just boring and and exercise in fancy CGI effects. The continuity of PI's hair length did not jive with time spent in a boat. At one point the boat is completely full of water and next scene the water is gone. When a viewer starts to notice little things like that the director has a problem.
