Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Not bad AT ALL!
I think Sam Raimi really did his homework on this one. At times, you think some of the scenes are a bit over the top but then this director smoothly lands us back to reality. It is hard to find the now really good horrors films that perhaps are not to overdone or exaggerated.
Moreover, the fact that this movie integrates multicultural aspects of religion and gypsies is very refreshing. I'd highly recommend to watch this movie!
The Descent (2005)
Overrated movie
The rating given to this movie is actually making me reconsider IMDd's contributor's credibility. To me, this move was just pathetic attempt of a "horror" (quotes open) film. The actors were so unsympathetic, the plot lacked in reliability. A total fiasco. The over hour-and-a-half that this movie lasts is not worth the time though. I have no more comments to be made about this movie since the more I find, the worse this film looks.
Flight (2012)
A story that makes one reflect
I think it will neither add nor remove anything out of this movie. Initially, I thought it was going to be about a plane crash but as it went on, this story turned into a very true and moving story.
There were a couple of actings, specially from one of the flight attendants who survived, which I felt kind of too flat and expected. Otherwise, I liked the gist of story and also the behind-the-scenes investigations when there is an plane accident.
Apart from this crash, the whole story line about alcoholism and its consequences was very well developed and it touches deep fibers. I think this is a very didactical movie that can give a lesson to many people who struggle with this disease.
The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
A very real story
Perfect movie for what is happening in the United States with gun control. This movie tells a very true story about fraud in any police department, dirty politics, gun control, drugs and violence. The most beautiful part of it is that it makes it by blending different ethnicities and backgrounds.
Although I thought Ryan Goslin was going to have a more significant role in the whole movie, his share on it was more than enough. The sequence of events and the story like make complete sense and coherently bind with one another.
La casa del fin de los tiempos (2013)
Not so good as it has many plot holes
These types of movies that play with time, time lapsing or type regression have to be carefully put together because it can lead the viewer to frustration when it taken back and forth in time. Regardless the origin of this movie, I think this movie was riddled with many pot holes which made it difficult to understand.
The acting was not so bad, specially from the kids, however, the bad done make-up done to the mother to make it look older, was very cheap. I think overall, this movie does not deserve the rating it currently holds and a lesson learned is that when directos play with time lapsing in movies, they to be well-taken care of.
Training Day (2001)
Excellent movie!
This is a well-paced movie that shows what could be happening behind any law enforcement agency in the world. This shows a sub-world or subculture that we are not aware of, and once you're drawn into it the plot, you can't stop watching. Very well developed characters, story lines, plot, everything!
The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
Neither good nor bad.
I don't really know what to say about this movie. It is one of those movies that leaves with you that sort of "could've-been-better feeling since there storylines that were a bit of-the-wall to me and which did not make sense at all.
On the other hand, something I did not like about is that the characters were only played by white people which, in my opinion, would have been better if at least some of the characters had a different ethinical background.
Mystic River (2003)
Great movie!
This is one of these movies that has a smooth lines and transitions throughout the whole plot. It also reflects the hidden reality of a rural Boston and how they "resolve" their issues. What I like more about it is that it touched the topic of pedophilia, which is very common nowadays. What even made it more interesting is the closeness between the people involved since it is between a group of friends where this plot unfolds, and also the instinct of betrayal.
Inside Man (2006)
Great plot but I still don't understand how the ring may give new leads.
Overall, I think this was a great movie, mainly due to history behind its plot; however, I still don't understand how a simple ring may lead to an investigation of war crimes. I mean, how would case be made against this banker just based on a ring.
Flawless interpretation made by Christopher Plumber an Judy Foster, they're both amazing. Regarding Denzel Washintong, I think that his character, in my view, was very expected. I would love to see him in other type of characters.
Hannibal (2001)
Not so bad but could've been better.
This movie really show how low our most intrinsic instincts may fall. I don't know what it was about but, to me, there were times when Julianne Moore's role was too expected. I think her character could've been better developed by recreating some sort of romance between her character and Hannibal.
On the other hand, the settings where this movie took place where absolutely gorgeous. Including a third language in it was a great movie from the director who made some of the the characters look very reliable. As far as Anthony Hopkins acting skills absolutely flawless.
Finally, I think it was a bad a idea to twist its ending compared to the novel's one since it left a feeling of inconclusiveness in this movie.
Butterfly on a Wheel (2007)
The price of a love affair....
Despite the fact the plot is absurd in my view, this is a real master piece that makes you reflect on the price of having it all or losing everything. At times, I thought there wouldn't be any sort of ending but the story lines kept me watching. Went a little bit overboard but kinda well.
As far what the characters go, I think they pulled it off fairly well..
Fruitvale Station (2013)
True reality exposed
I have to say that the movie is pretty boring almost till its end since that's the part when things really make sense. Also, I think there are some social elements in Oscar Grant's that could've been developed better. He had a life full of difficulties that would've made his character more human and realistic maybe presenting some glimpses of his childhood, overall violence during his upbringing, etc. Overall, I think the message was conveyed and it is the true brutality.
This is a very educational filmed that should be taught in the police, schools, and any other institution where basic human rights are in place, so that we can all learn from this brutality and make a change in our still racist society.
Me Before You (2016)
I understood the "me before you" till its end.
Very underrated piece of art! Right at the beginning, one thinks is another stupid and cheesy love story buy thank God I kept on watching!
You would expect from this movie to have one of those repeated and cheesy love ending, and it's certainly one of those but not in how one would call a "standard" one.
What I rescue from this whole movie is how love can be felt and experience differently for all of us and respect for our one decisions is an expression of the deepest sign of love, which is respect. You really have to watch this movie!
The Town (2010)
Great story, the police-related scenes a bit flawed.
From the beginning, the movie grabs the attention by taking the viewer through well played scenes, however, as you go along the movie, you start to see some flawed scenes, especially during the investigation since the FBI starts following them but then suddenly you get to see this interesting element of the investigation anymore . To me, that's not coherent with a real police investigation.
By the end of the movie, when Doug McRay escapes during his last robbery, he, in the eyes of FBI Agent, Adam Frawley, takes a police car from and escapes from the scene. In a real, robbery scene, if you do this, they won't even let a police leave the scene like that. These two tiny elements, in my view, undermines the credibility of the whole plot. But, in overall terms, not a bad movie.
Ah-ga-ssi (2016)
A very refined and directed movie
This is all about greediness and its betrayal. During the first part of this movie, it kind of doesn't make any sense; however, during the second part is when things start to get way better.
I have to though that even though some of the translations in English are sometimes grammatically incoherent, one, as a viewer can still infer or grasp the message. The softness of language in this movie, draws you more into the setting, atmosphere and characters.
On the other hand, the acting skills shown by all of their actors and actresses are simply flawless and amazing. I don't what is it about these asian actors that they don't overplay nor fall into too much screaming or cheesy acting. This is something else!
I highly recommend this movie to understand better the depths of our most innate human emotions and nature.
Cube (1997)
Overrated movie.
Among cynical characters and, to my opinion, no meaningful message delivered, this movie went by with no share or part. I think the idea of people trapped in cube is no new at all and even though this movie certainly keeps your attention for more than a hour, by the end you feel that there is no message to reflect on. All what it does is to kind of keep you a bit scare and get you into its plot here and there, but at times it doesn't. Therefore, that's what I'm giving 5 out of 10.
Arrival (2016)
It's all about the relativity of language
Although this is a very complicated movie to understand, it has a very deep message about communication and how important language is for science and to transfer intelligence.
This film leaves with the odd sensation of wanting more or with a feeling of something not concluded, and that's the beauty of it, that it leaves you with that sort taste of: "there should be something more ....". Anyway, regardless the existence of alien life, the message of it is the core value of this movie.
The Invitation (2015)
Poorly-developed small elements in this plot.
To be honest, this movie keeps the viewer in a boring expectation until its very last part, too late in my opinion, for the action to begin. Nonetheless, when it finally does, there are some elements of the its main plot, like for example, when they are trapped in the house trying to escape, that wouldn't even happen in a real kidnapping scenario like this one.
In my opinion, when I thought that this was going to get really good, it turned out to be another repeated thriller, where just the smallest details of its plot were not developed. Such a waste of good acting skills.
The Age of Adaline (2015)
In a trashy market, a very refreshing and enchanting love story!
At the beginning, this story may seem to be another cheesy and repeated love story; however, the actor's non-overplayed roles draw you in the story, making this two-hour film go by really fast. Whoever wrote this did it very well since the story does not fall into nonsense romantic drama and endless love stories. It keeps a fascinating tension throughout it that makes it at times pleasing to watch.
You may wonder why I'm rating this with 8 instead of 10, and the reason is that there is no perfect movie, and this one has some timeline flaws, specifically, Adelaine's timeline is not clear though.
