I'm aware some of the films listed in here are not regarded as particulary great but this is just a very personal list and it basically reflects the kind of taste I have for cinema.

1. Heathers (1988)

R | 103 min | Comedy, Crime

72 Metascore

At Westerburg High where cliques rule, jocks dominate and all the popular girls are named Heather, it's going to take a Veronica and mysterious new kid to give teen angst a body count.

Director: Michael Lehmann | Stars: Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk

Votes: 115,978 | Gross: $1.11M

Eighties is my sh*t and Heathers is the Ultimate Eighties Movie. You figure it out... but seriously though, I'd say Heathers is one of the greatest movies out there. Quotable, memorable, iconic, awesome... I know I'm totally fanboying but how could I not if this is pretty much my favorite film ever? Also, Winona Ryder is the lead actress. Lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up.

2. Ghost World (2001)

R | 111 min | Comedy, Drama

90 Metascore

Two eccentric best friends graduate high school and respond to a man's romance-seeking newspaper ad as a gag, only to find their lives becoming increasingly complicated.

Director: Terry Zwigoff | Stars: Steve Buscemi, Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Renfro

Votes: 126,889 | Gross: $6.22M

Sarcastic and hilarious but also with a high degree of depth if you really wanna think about it. Ghost World is a film that reminds me a lot of myself as I share many similarities with the main character Enid... which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Still, I'm probably not as cool as Enid. To be honest, I'm in love with Ghost World, every character and situation as well as the majority of the dialogues are pure gold. Indie cinema at its absolute finest.

3. The Hitcher (1986)

R | 97 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

32 Metascore

A young man who escapes the clutches of a murderous hitchhiker is subsequently stalked by the hitcher and framed for his crimes.

Director: Robert Harmon | Stars: Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeffrey DeMunn

Votes: 52,599 | Gross: $5.84M

After recently watching The Hitcher for like the twentieth time I must say the first 15 minutes are some of the most atmospheric and haunting moments I have ever seen from any 1980's film. Mark Isham's synth soundtrack is simply a masterpiece and it is perhaps my favorite score of all time. It is kind of sad how often overlooked is the original Hitcher from 1986 compared to the remake starring Sean Bean which in my opinion is an abomination of epic proportions.

4. The Fly (1986)

R | 96 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

81 Metascore

A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.

Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz, Joy Boushel

Votes: 202,100 | Gross: $40.46M

I think most people would agree The Fly is Cronenberg's masterpiece and probably the best remake of all time. The level of grotesque in The Fly is legendary and that's probably the aspect I like the most about it despite having a fantastic plot about love and tragedy and all of that. I will never forget having nightmares by just watching the trailer and then watching the damn thing after literally years. It was a horribly beautiful experience if that makes any sense.

5. Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)

R | 100 min | Drama

86 Metascore

A sexually repressed woman's husband is having an affair with her sister. The arrival of a visitor with a rather unusual fetish changes everything.

Director: Steven Soderbergh | Stars: James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, Laura San Giacomo

Votes: 59,489 | Gross: $24.74M

Very bold writing by Steven Soderbergh but also fantastic directing. Some minimalist cinematography yet beautiful and entrancing. James Spader is amazing and memorable as the mysterious voyeurist named Graham who only wears black boots, stonewashed jeans and a black shirt. Andie MacDowell looked so damn beautiful she practically makes me smile every time she's on screen.

6. The Squid and the Whale (2005)

R | 81 min | Comedy, Drama

82 Metascore

Follows two young boys dealing with their parents' divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980s.

Director: Noah Baumbach | Stars: Owen Kline, Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg

Votes: 90,487 | Gross: $7.36M

Another indie film but this one is actually quite a masterpiece. Great cast, even Jesse Eisenberg whom I'm not that much of a fan delivers a brilliant performance.

7. Blade Runner (1982)

R | 117 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

A blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos

Votes: 823,647 | Gross: $32.87M

A film that needs no introduction. Despite the numerous cuts, I'm fond of every single one of them.

8. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

R | 158 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

71 Metascore

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 495,142 | Gross: $102.52M

The one film that made me apreciate David Fincher (or perhaps I should say love). It also made me fall in love with Rooney Mara's Lisbeth Salander. Watching the behind the scenes footage is what changed my plain liking of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo into a rather unhealthy obsession. I'm still grieving over the now forever unfinished state of Fincher's Millenium trilogy.

9. American Beauty (1999)

R | 122 min | Drama

84 Metascore

A sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley

Votes: 1,211,686 | Gross: $130.10M

I initially disliked this film, then I had the urge to watch it again and again. I'd say this film is sort of a "mood" and I find odd how nostalgic it makes me feel even thou it is not a film I grew watching. A classic and a favorite of mine for sure.
