1. American Graffiti (1973)

PG | 110 min | Comedy, Drama

97 Metascore

A group of teenagers in California's central valley spend one final night after their 1962 high school graduation cruising the strip with their buddies before they pursue their varying goals.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith

Votes: 98,145 | Gross: $115.00M

Whether it's realistic or not very few films have created a sense of time and place as well as this minor masterpiece which deservedly put Lucas on the map and for me still has one of the all time great rock sound tracks, many films have been influenced by Graffiti like Superbad or Linklater's wonderful "Dazed and Confused" but for me at least have never quite reached the same level... one can debate how great a Director Lucas is but he made 2 films that will stand the test of time even though this one has taken a back seat to the juggernaut that is "Star Wars" which I think is unfortunate because there are moments in this film that are just as memorable.

2. Doctor, Beware (1941)

92 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

Teresa, a young orphan, falls in love with Pietro, a health inspector. She will try to bring order to his reckless life full of debts and lies.

Director: Vittorio De Sica | Stars: Adriana Benetti, Irasema Dilián, Anna Magnani, Clara Auteri Pepe

Votes: 566

About 35 years ago I saw a De Sica film that took me by surprise and thought it was a wonderful romantic/comedy and among the best films he's ever made but over time I forgot much of the film and began to think this was a film that if I ever saw again would certainly not live up to my 1st viewing but again to my surprise it did... This is a charming and engaging film that I found to be just a delight from beginning to end with characters I really liked especially Teresa Venerdi which was the title of the film when I first saw it...I believe this is one of De Sica's earliest works if not his 1st and certainly isn't the cinematic gems he created later on but the film has it's own warmth and magic that for me ranks it among his best... this film has always been at the top of my need to see again list but could never find it until now and I'm so glad I finally saw it again... this is light weight fluff when compared to what many consider his masterpieces but on it's terms I'd rank this higher than many of those films not on a cinematic level but on an emotional one...my smile at the end of the film was as big as Teresa's.

3. The Gunfighter (1950)

Approved | 85 min | Western

94 Metascore

Notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo rides into town to find his true love, who doesn't want to see him. He hasn't come looking for trouble, but trouble finds him around every corner.

Director: Henry King | Stars: Gregory Peck, Helen Westcott, Millard Mitchell, Jean Parker

Votes: 12,521

When I think of the greatest westerns of all time I seem to forget about this gem which seems so ahead of it's time that shows the moral ambiguity of what makes an outlaw and how his reputation is a burden that wears on him and follows him wherever he goes... I'm not the biggest Gregory Peck fan but this is one of his great performances and Millard Mitchell is quite good as well... 2nd viewing might be better than first and this is another one of these films that probably deserves a 10 because I really can't find anything to fault in this revisionist western but I'm not quite there yet, maybe next time.

4. Apollo 13 (I) (1995)

PG | 140 min | Adventure, Drama, History

78 Metascore

NASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise

Votes: 315,541 | Gross: $173.84M

The fact that the film still manages to build suspense even though one knows the outcome is one of it's great strengths along with Howard's great direction and the solid performances from the cast especially Hanks and Harris... hadn't seen this film since it first came out but my opinion hasn't changed and this might be my favorite Howard film.

9

5. Where Eagles Dare (1968)

M | 158 min | Action, Adventure, War

63 Metascore

Allied agents stage a daring raid on a castle where the Nazis are holding American brigadier general George Carnaby prisoner, but that's not all that's really going on.

Director: Brian G. Hutton | Stars: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Mary Ure, Patrick Wymark

Votes: 62,897

This is one of the most thrilling and entertaining films Clint's ever made and yet it's an enigma in his filmography simply because his presence wasn't necessary for this film to work and neither was Burton's to be honest because their both overshadowed by the action and in Clint's case that's shocking... I've seen this film 4 or 5 times and my opinion hasn't changed, it's one of his best films yet it's one of the few films in which his presence didn't add anything to the film.

9

6. The Big Heat (1953)

Passed | 89 min | Crime, Film-Noir, Thriller

Tough cop Dave Bannion takes on a politically powerful crime syndicate.

Director: Fritz Lang | Stars: Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, Jocelyn Brando, Alexander Scourby

Votes: 29,160

This well made dark, violent and brooding noir is among the best this genre has to offer with Ford and Grahame shining and Marvin stands out as well...the scalding hot water scene is still pretty potent today and can't imagine how shocking that must have been back in the day.

9

7. The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936)

Passed | 86 min | Biography, Drama, History

The biography of the pioneering French microbiologist who helped revolutionize agriculture and medicine.

Director: William Dieterle | Stars: Paul Muni, Josephine Hutchinson, Anita Louise, Donald Woods

Votes: 3,152

Warner Bros. made a lot of these bio pics back in the day and I always loved them and this used to be not only my favorite but one of my favorite films of all time but as much as I enjoyed seeing it again this is yet again another of my favorites that's taken a bit of a hit... I still think it's a great film with another solid Muni performance but I wish the story was a little more in depth and not as simplistic as it is but most of these type of films were done that way back than, to be honest they still make them that way even now...what was once top 100 is closer to bottom 1000 but I still think it's a well made and acted film about a man who deserves to be remembered and honored.

9

8. The Westerner (1940)

Passed | 100 min | Drama, Western

78 Metascore

Judge Roy Bean, a self-appointed hanging judge in Vinegarroon, Texas, befriends saddle tramp Cole Harden, who opposes Bean's policy against homesteaders.

Director: William Wyler | Stars: Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, Doris Davenport, Fred Stone

Votes: 6,797

Cooper is his aw shucks likable best in this beautifully made and photographed western but it's Brennan who really stands out and gives what might be his best performance as Judge Roy Bean...Brennan is one of those character actors who I've always liked even when he's hamming it up and god knows that cackle of his is impossible to forget but here he actually acts and makes this Judge Roy Bean one of the most memorable in film.

9

9. Day of the Outlaw (1959)

Not Rated | 92 min | Drama, Western

Blaise Starrett is a rancher at odds with homesteaders when outlaws hold up the small town. The outlaws are held in check only by their notorious leader, but he is diagnosed with a fatal wound and the town is a powder keg waiting to blow.

Director: André De Toth | Stars: Robert Ryan, Burl Ives, Tina Louise, Alan Marshal

Votes: 4,423

Dark, brooding western that exceeded my expectations and turned out to be a nice surprise since I never heard of this film before, Ryan, Ives, Louise, and Lambert are quite good, it's a well made film that never goes where I think it's going to go and the wintery scenery works to it's advantage.

9

10. The Enforcer (1951)

Approved | 87 min | Crime, Film-Noir, Thriller

A crusading district attorney finally gets a chance to prosecute the organizer and boss of Murder Inc.

Directors: Bretaigne Windust, Raoul Walsh | Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Zero Mostel, Ted de Corsia, Everett Sloane

Votes: 5,642

This taut hard-nosed and suspenseful crime film is one of Bogie's most under-rated that grabs you right from the beginning and never lets up with solid performances from Bogie, de Corsia and others and this is one of those films that's so well done that I'm willing to forgive questionable story elements... 2nd viewing a little better than first.

9

11. The Professionals (1966)

PG-13 | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

75 Metascore

An arrogant Texas millionaire hires four adventurers to rescue his kidnapped wife from a notorious Mexican bandit.

Director: Richard Brooks | Stars: Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode

Votes: 18,833 | Gross: $19.54M

The cast is first rate in this well made and entertaining action Western with Lancaster in particular standing out... this is another film I hadn't seen in almost 35 years and it's as good as I remember.

9

12. Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)

R | 115 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

62 Metascore

With the help of an irreverent young sidekick, a bank robber gets his old gang back together to organize a daring new heist.

Director: Michael Cimino | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, George Kennedy, Geoffrey Lewis

Votes: 28,711 | Gross: $25.00M

This is about the 3rd or 4th time I've seen this crime/buddy film and I don't think I've ever liked it more, I thought Eastwood and Bridges worked extremely well together and Kennedy was terrific as well and Cimino proved to be a Director worth watching and makes me think it's time to give Heaven's Gate another try.

8

13. The Iron Rose (1973)

TV-MA | 86 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

A young couple out for a walk decide to take a stroll through a large cemetery. As darkness begins to fall they realize they can't find their way out, and soon their fears begin to overtake them.

Director: Jean Rollin | Stars: Françoise Pascal, Hugues Quester, Natalie Perrey, Mireille Dargent

Votes: 2,298

Rollin's best film that's about as coherent as you'll get from him, it deals with a couple unable to find their way out of a cemetery and slowly descending into madness... very atmospheric and has some great imagery as well... 2nd viewing better than 1st and it's the one film of his that I could see people calling a classic of it's type.

8

14. Drácula (1931)

Unrated | 104 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

Centuries-old vampire Dracula preys upon the innocent Eva and her friends.

Director: George Melford | Stars: Carlos Villarías, Lupita Tovar, Barry Norton, Pablo Álvarez Rubio

Votes: 5,100

Personally I think this is far more than a curiosity and in many ways is a better cinematic experience than it's more famous counterpart, in terms of atmosphere and eroticism but what stops it from greatness is it goes on longer than needed and the actor playing Dracula is rather bland and when he's on screen you can't help thinking about Lugosi who made the Browning version a more memorable and enjoyable film...saw it 30 years ago and my opinion's pretty much the same.

8

15. Fascination (1979)

Not Rated | 80 min | Horror

A runaway criminal breaks into an eerie chateau, taking its two frightened chambermaids hostage. As night falls, a group of mysterious aristocratic women arrive and the criminal begins to realize the women are hiding a sinister secret.

Director: Jean Rollin | Stars: Franca Maï, Brigitte Lahaie, Jean-Marie Lemaire, Fanny Magier

Votes: 3,551

Rollin's surreal dreamlike erotic horror film may be even better 2nd time around and certainly is among his best... this is one of the few films he's made where everything seems to gel from his imagery to the performances( which is usually the weakest part of his films).

8

16. Tropic Thunder (2008)

R | 107 min | Action, Comedy, War

71 Metascore

Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.

Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Kahn

Votes: 447,998 | Gross: $110.52M

I have to admit 2nd time around I didn't find it quite as laugh out loud funny as my 1st viewing but I still had a good time for the most part with this at times spot on satire of the movie industry with the cast giving it their all... Downey is the performance most people talk about but for me Cruise stole the show with his hilarious performance as Producer Les Grossman which I think is one of his best...this is a film that some may find offensive so be warned.

8

17. House of Darkness (2022)

R | 88 min | Comedy, Horror, Mystery

54 Metascore

Hap offers Mina a ride home with ulterior motives, but his night takes a turn when he learns she lives in a creepy American castle...and the shadowy figures in the corridors make it clear that he isn't welcome.

Director: Neil LaBute | Stars: Kate Bosworth, Justin Long, Gia Crovatin, Lucy Walters

Votes: 4,695

I personally had a good time with this relationship/horror film despite an ending that might seem like overkill but I thought the performances were solid and it kept me intrigued and engaged right to the end even though you have an idea where it's heading.

8

18. The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950)

Not Rated | 81 min | Comedy

Chaos ensues for staff and students alike after an all-boys and an all-girls school are amalgamated into one.

Director: Frank Launder | Stars: Alastair Sim, Margaret Rutherford, John Turnbull, Richard Wattis

Votes: 1,885

This slight but engaging farce has some funny moments but it's Rutherford and Sims who steal the show and make this far more enjoyable than it would be without them.

8

19. The Spoilers (1942)

Passed | 87 min | Drama, Western

In Nome, Alaska, miner Roy Glennister and his partner Dextry, financed by saloon entertainer Cherry Malotte, fight to save their gold claim from crooked commissioner Alexander McNamara.

Director: Ray Enright | Stars: Marlene Dietrich, Randolph Scott, John Wayne, Margaret Lindsay

Votes: 3,253

The best of the Dietrich/Wayne films that I found quite entertaining with a terrific brawl at the end it also has solid supporting work from Scott, Carey and others but I will say this is a film of it's era and if you can not view the film in that context you will find things to be offended by...2nd viewing same as 1st.

8

20. Demon Seed (1977)

Approved | 94 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

A scientist creates Proteus--an organic super computer with artificial intelligence which becomes obsessed with human beings, and in particular the creator's wife.

Director: Donald Cammell | Stars: Julie Christie, Fritz Weaver, Gerrit Graham, Berry Kroeger

Votes: 10,002

Another film that I'm probably over-rating but I still think this is an intelligent sci-fi/horror film way ahead of it's time that I find quite compelling and deals with themes that current films like Ex-Machina and others explore...2nd viewing almost same as 1st, I found the ending fairly obvious and bordering on cheesy but still satisfying.

8

21. The Suspicious Death of a Minor (1975)

Not Rated | 100 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

While investigating the brutal murder of a young prostitute, a detective uncovers a sex-trafficking ring with connections to powerful people.

Director: Sergio Martino | Stars: Claudio Cassinelli, Mel Ferrer, Lia Tanzi, Gianfranco Barra

Votes: 1,761

The film is more police procedural than giallo although those elements are there and I found it surprisingly good, it's also part comedy and I think the film would have better served without those moments, since most of it seemed out of place but what I liked I liked a lot and thought this was a well made and entertaining film.

8

22. The Cursed (2021)

R | 111 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

62 Metascore

In rural 19th-century France, a mysterious, possibly supernatural menace threatens a small village. John McBride, a pathologist, comes to town to investigate the danger - and exorcise some of his own demons in the process.

Director: Sean Ellis | Stars: Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, Alistair Petrie, Roxane Duran

Votes: 16,614

It may not break new ground but for the most part I found this werewolves tale quite satisfying that at times seems like a throwback to classic horror films of the past from Universal to Hammer, the mythology and atmosphere it creates plus the horror elements work, it's weakness may be in not having an emotional connection to the characters that one would should.

8

23. Gretel & Hansel (2020)

PG-13 | 87 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

64 Metascore

A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.

Director: Oz Perkins | Stars: Sophia Lillis, Samuel Leakey, Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw

Votes: 34,027 | Gross: $15.35M

I found this visually and atmospheric feminist retelling of the classic fairy tale quite satisfying for the most part but some may find the pacing even at 90 minutes a little slow.

8

24. Who Saw Her Die? (1972)

Not Rated | 94 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Between a four-year gap in the murder of a young girl, the daughter of a well-known sculptor is discovered dead, and her parents conduct an investigation, only to discover they are much out of their depth.

Director: Aldo Lado | Stars: George Lazenby, Anita Strindberg, Adolfo Celi, Dominique Boschero

Votes: 2,915

One has to wonder when watching this film if Nicolas Roeg saw it since there are many similarities between this film and "Don't Look Now" not just in terms of story but scenes that seem almost identical which made this film quite fascinating to watch especially since this film came out first and it may be for that reason that I found this giallo quite satisfying.

8

25. The House of the Devil (2009)

R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery

73 Metascore

In 1983, financially struggling college student Samantha Hughes takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse. She slowly realizes her clients harbor a terrifying secret, putting her life in mortal danger.

Director: Ti West | Stars: Jocelin Donahue, Tom Noonan, Mary Woronov, Greta Gerwig

Votes: 51,259 | Gross: $0.10M

The ending is a matter of opinion but this is a retro horror film from the 70's and 80's that had these type of endings and I still think the film as a whole works quite well for the most part and certainly made Ti West a director worth watching and so far I've been impressed with most of his throwback films... 2nd viewing pretty much same as 1st.

8

26. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Drama

78 Metascore

After thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN's elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.

Director: Joseph Kosinski | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer

Votes: 696,490 | Gross: $718.73M

A far more agreeable film than the original despite the silly but predictable ending that does a good job paying homage to the original with Cruise in top form and the supporting cast doing a good job in keeping the story engaging, the romance part of the story which was the worst part of the original takes a back seat to the action and enjoyable aerial scenes even though I think the relationship between Connelly and Cruise worked better for me than McGillis and Cruise... I had a good time with this film despite the overblown ending and because of that am probably rating it higher than it deserves but it is a film that could take a hit with a 2nd viewing.

8

27. The Fall of the House of Usher (1928)

Not Rated | 72 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

Allan visits the sinister Usher family mansion, where his friend Roderick is painting a portrait of his sickly wife Madeline. The portrait seems to be draining the life out of Madeline, slowly leading to her death.

Director: Jean Epstein | Stars: Jean Debucourt, Marguerite Gance, Charles Lamy, Fournez-Goffard

Votes: 4,502

Enjoy the imagery even if your not sure what's happening at times but this silent version of the Poe tale on madness is quite interesting and many consider this the best version of the tale but I'll stick with the Corman/Price version... Bunuel left during production but his influence seems obvious.

8

28. X (II) (2022)

R | 105 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

80 Metascore

In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew find themselves fighting for their lives.

Director: Ti West | Stars: Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi

Votes: 172,738

Ti West does these retro style horror films better than most and here's another winner that has that Chainsaw feel and look to it, at least until the last act which even though it works up to a point wasn't as satisfying as I would of liked.

8

29. The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971)

R | 81 min | Crime, Horror, Mystery

An ambassador's wife discovers that one of the men in her life - either her husband, an ex-lover or her current lover - may be a vicious serial killer.

Director: Sergio Martino | Stars: George Hilton, Edwige Fenech, Conchita Airoldi, Manuel Gil

Votes: 5,448

I found the twist in this giallo among the most satisfying this genre has to offer and as a whole the film was quite enjoyable even if there are story elements one can question as there almost always are in this genre... as giallo's go this is among the best.

8

30. Royal Wedding (1951)

Not Rated | 93 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance

A brother and sister dance act encounter challenges and romance when booked in London during the Royal Wedding.

Director: Stanley Donen | Stars: Fred Astaire, Jane Powell, Peter Lawford, Sarah Churchill

Votes: 6,105

The story is light weight fluff but the dance numbers are quite good especially the creative dancing on the ceiling number and Astaire even in his 50's is in top form and for me was enough to make this a very enjoyable film.

8

31. Outland (1981)

R | 109 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

48 Metascore

A federal marshal stationed at a mining colony on the Jupiter moon of Io uncovers a drug-smuggling conspiracy. He gets no help from the workers or authorities when he finds himself marked for murder.

Director: Peter Hyams | Stars: Sean Connery, Frances Sternhagen, Peter Boyle, James Sikking

Votes: 32,367 | Gross: $17.37M

This film has always been viewed negatively as an outer space version of High Noon which it basically is but I think it works quite well not as great cinema like Noon but as entertainment and think Connery does a solid job in the lead...3rd or 4th time seeing the film and my opinion hasn't really changed.

8

32. The Machine (I) (2013)

R | 91 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

52 Metascore

In efforts to construct perfect android killing machines in a war against China, UK scientists exceed their goal and create a sentient robot.

Director: Caradog W. James | Stars: Toby Stephens, Caity Lotz, Denis Lawson, Sam Hazeldine

Votes: 32,063

I know the film is uneven, the shootout at the end was a little to Hollywood and certain parts of the story are underdeveloped but I still find this to be a stimulating and fairly intelligent sci-fi film that engaged me from beginning to end... 2nd viewing almost as good as first.

8

33. The Card Counter (2021)

R | 111 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

78 Metascore

William Tell is an ex-military interrogator living under the radar as a low-stakes gambler. When he encounters a young man looking to commit revenge against a mutual enemy, he takes him on the casino circuit to set him on a new path.

Director: Paul Schrader | Stars: Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, Willem Dafoe

Votes: 42,995

The film is both compelling and uneven at the same time mainly because the story itself seems implausible but Isaac gives such a strong performance that he makes it work for the most part and for me is the reason to see this film.

8

34. Stella Dallas (1937)

Approved | 106 min | Drama, Romance

A working-class woman is willing to do whatever it takes to give her daughter a socially promising future.

Director: King Vidor | Stars: Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, Barbara O'Neil

Votes: 6,277 | Gross: $2.00M

I always avoided this film because I thought this was another damsel in distress film that usually doesn't show Stanwyck at her best but I was wrong this is a competently made tear jerker that's elevated by another star performance from the great Barbara Stanwyck.

7

35. Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

51 Metascore

The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy

Votes: 146,974 | Gross: $65.19M

The game cast makes this old fashioned Fantasy quite engaging but 2nd time around I found the CGI very hit and miss and makes it not quite as enjoyable as first viewing.

7

36. Merrily We Live (1938)

Passed | 95 min | Comedy, Romance

Dizzy society matron Emily Kilbourne has a habit of hiring ex-cons and hobos as servants. Her latest find is a handsome "tramp" who shows up at her doorstep and soon ends up in a ... See full summary »

Director: Norman Z. McLeod | Stars: Constance Bennett, Brian Aherne, Alan Mowbray, Billie Burke

Votes: 2,269

Very similar to "My Man Godfrey" which I think came out a year or 2 earlier and even though it can't compare to that screwball comedy classic it's still a lot of fun until the last act which I didn't think worked and all the pratfalls at the end was more silly than amusing... would have given it an 8 if it wasn't for the last 10 minutes or so.

7

37. Sissy (I) (2022)

Not Rated | 102 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror

67 Metascore

Teen best friends Cecilia and Emma, run into each other after a decade. Cecilia is invited to Emma's bachelorette weekend where she gets stuck in a remote cabin with her high school bully and a taste for revenge.

Directors: Hannah Barlow, Kane Senes | Stars: Aisha Dee, Hannah Barlow, Emily De Margheriti, Daniel Monks

Votes: 7,618

I had a good time with this fun and engaging horror film that deals with bullying and mental health mainly because of solid performances from it's stars especially Aisha Dee

7

38. The Psychopath (1966)

Approved | 82 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

Four men who were involved in the investigation of a German millionaire at the end of World War II are found murdered with tiny dolls left next to their corpses.

Director: Freddie Francis | Stars: Patrick Wymark, Margaret Johnston, John Standing, Alexander Knox

Votes: 1,107

I'm almost tempted to give this early British giallo type thriller a higher rating simply for exceeding my expectations because I found it very engaging and the doll gimmick worked quite well and it has all the ingredients of a good giallo except the gore, sex and convoluted plot( actually there are those who would say that is the ingredients of a giallo haha) but I do think you're just going along for the ride because it's not hard to figure out who the killer is and if you've seen Psycho since this was written by Robert Bloch there are elements of that story here.

7

39. Diabolik (2021)

134 min | Action, Crime, Mystery

The dark and romantic story of the first meeting between master thief Diabolik and Eva Kant, set in the fictional state of Clerville in the late 1960s. Inspector Ginko is on the hunt for the criminal, trying to stop his evil plans.

Directors: Antonio Manetti, Marco Manetti | Stars: Luca Marinelli, Miriam Leone, Valerio Mastandrea, Alessandro Roja

Votes: 3,829

Bava's stylish and engaging version of the film was all tongue and cheek and it worked for the most part but the tone in this version seems to be all over the place, at times it takes the material more seriously with Diabolik being a more cold and ruthless individual and other times it seems to have a lighter touch especially with Miriame Leone's character and it's the unevenness of the tone that works against it despite fine work from the cast, especially the aforementioned Miriame Leone that at least for me stops it from being as good as Bava's.

7

40. Emily the Criminal (2022)

R | 97 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

75 Metascore

Down on her luck and saddled with debt, Emily gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences.

Director: John Patton Ford | Stars: Aubrey Plaza, Theo Rossi, Bernardo Badillo, John Billingsley

Votes: 55,234

This crime drama is certainly well made and acted yet there's something about it that left me a little cold.

7

41. The Beast of the City (1932)

Passed | 86 min | Crime, Drama, Film-Noir

Police Chief Jim Fitzpatrick ruthlessly goes after organized crime and is prepared to use brutal and violent methods to fight it.

Director: Charles Brabin | Stars: Walter Huston, Jean Harlow, Wallace Ford, Jean Hersholt

Votes: 1,420 | Gross: $0.89M

Pre-code crime drama that's quite good until the courtroom theatrics which was a little over the top for me but Harlow has a few memorable moments as Harlow always does, some scenes and dialogue are pretty risque for the times, Huston is solid as well and the final showdown was effective enough to make this well worth watching.

7

42. Seven Sinners (1940)

Although it's not as much fun as I once thought when I first saw it 35 years ago, I still had a good time with this romp...Dietrich and Wayne were having a fling at the time and the chemistry between the two is evident and their chemistry helped make this a fun watch.

I remember loving this droll spy thriller when I first saw it 30 years ago which made me a fan of Caine who I thought was terrific and always considered this one of his best performances but now it seems rather quaint and obvious, and Caine's performance while good is far from being among his best... It's drollness still works for me but it's certainly not the great film I once thought.

I found this throwback to the horror films of the 80's surprisingly entertaining with it's old school and at times cheesy make-up and over the top gore even the humor worked for the most part but I'm not sure the CGI generation will find much to appreciate.

This is one of those films that I've seen a few times and it gets it's hooks into me but by the end I feel somewhat cheated by the whole experience, I'm enjoying it up to a point but felt like the rug was pulled from under me even though I always expected it to end the way it did, it may just be because of the ending much of the film seems implausible if one wants to over analyze it but I can't deny that for the most part I went along for the ride.

Another solid and intriguing western by Boetticher and Scott that I wish I liked more, despite good performances and well defined characters considering the short time, it's let down by a morality tale that just didn't work as well as it should have.

This was an Eastwood film that when I first saw it about 40 years ago didn't do much for me and to be honest other than what I rated it back than( I started rating movies back in 82 when I was in my teens) didn't remember much of it at all except for a train sequence, so this was like watching it anew and it turned out better than I thought it would...the film looks good, Eastwood and Duvall are solid and it's an efficiently made and fast paced western that goes by quickly, and for the most part I had a good time with it, it's minor Eastwood but 2nd time around was better than 1st.

Marilyn Chambers does a good job in one of Cronenberg's first forays into body horror and is the reason this film is his most remembered of his early 70's work although for me I believe "Shivers" is his best film from back than... it's been ages since I last saw this film and found it a much better experience this time but I do think even though it deals with his favorite topic it has much in common with Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" as well but so did "Shivers".

Cary Grant can do no wrong even in this at times overly sentimental film that does a good job at tugging at your heartstrings and I'm sure there are those who will find this warm hearted family dramedy irresistible, just as there will be those who will find it mawkish but I have to admit it worked for the most part mainly because of Grant and Drake.

I was 15 when I saw Caddyshack at the theater and I remember as a whole finding it enjoyable enough but nothing special, I was one of the few people who thought Murray's antics and the stuff with the gopher unfunny and felt the film as a whole was hit and miss and after 40 years my opinion is exactly the same, Dangerfield has his moments and Chase is likable enough as is Knight's over the top hysterics and the film is very watchable and surprisingly engaging even when it doesn't work which makes no sense , I will say the pool scene when I was 15 was hysterical and the highlight of the film for me now it's just amusing...2nd viewing same as 1st.

How much you like this film may depend on what you think of the effects and there's no denying that they haven't aged well but I still found some of the visuals engaging almost in a psychedelic way and the fact that the actors played it straight worked for me even at it's silliest but there's no denying that this is a film from my childhood that wasn't as much fun as I once thought.

One of Ford's earliest films and for fans of the Director and cinephiles it's quite interesting, there are scenes here that made me think of "The Searchers" including similarities between Carey's character and Wayne's and while this film certainly doesn't have the polish or lyricism of his masterpieces their here at times in what I would call rough form... I have to say the print I saw was terrific.

I've seen this throwback sci-fi film a few times and for the most part find it very agreeable but I'm someone who grew up on these type of films that were prevalent especially in the 50's although they still make them today but I'm not sure modern audiences will get much out of it, Le Mat is on the wooden side and some may find it a little slow and cheesy...this is one of these films that I haven't seen in about 30 years and other than finding it enjoyable don't think is anything special but it has stayed with me and I'll be damned if I know why.

I used to think the sequel was as good if not better than the first film but after seeing it again I found it disappointing ,the chemistry is still there between Gibson and Glover and Pesci was a lot of fun but it's everything else that didn't do much for me, I didn't find the action as exciting as I once did and thought it was a bit over the top as was the story and the love interest was pointless... I didn't think Lethal Weapon was the great film I once thought it was when I saw it again but still found it very entertaining, this one not so much where only the humor works for the most part.

This is one of those films where the performances are fine, Guinness, Coward, Ives and Kovacs shine and it looks good, there are shots that reminded me of Reeds masterpiece "The Third Man" and yet it never satisfies, the lighter tone for me doesn't always work especially with the darker moments towards the end and I wish O'Hara was utilized better but it's another one of these films that deserves a 2nd viewing.

I actually think this film would of played better if it was just an action war film like "Where Eagles Dare" and they played it straight without all the goofball characters( I'm a fan of Sutherland but I found his character off-putting and O'Connor was even worst). Eastwood and Savalas come off best because they are playing it straight and the action scenes are quite good and the location setting works to it's benefit but overall it's a mixed bag which is how I felt about it almost 40 years ago when I last saw it.

Intriguing if not altogether satisfying Cronenberg film that goes back to his roots in body horror but I had a problem with the tone of the film and found myself wondering if certain scenes, if not the whole movie was meant to be taken seriously or as black comedy mainly because the performances were shall we say a bit strange, especially Stewart.

It might be the best in the series since the original but I had 2 problems with it, the first being it plays a little to much like the original at times which worked against it and the lead actress even though she tries hard just wasn't very convincing in the part but the premise works for the most part as does the setting.

I don't know if I should give credit to Hawke or the masks he wears because he was creepy and the best thing about this horror film which overall I found lacking... I think the film was trying to be more than just a traditional horror film and the horror element suffered because of it because I didn't find it scary and the supernatural elements became tiresome and if this was a film about believing in yourself and never giving up hope it didn't quite gel.

When I first saw this film back in 86 I thought it was a solid and intelligent action film which was a shock to me since I've never liked anything Norris did and this was by far the best thing he ever did and after seeing it again it still might be the best thing he ever did but the film certainly isn't as smart as I once thought, there are story elements that didn't make sense to me such as having the chance to kill Norris but you don't and the way the whole code of silence stuff was resolved seemed wrong, I also thought there were to many slow motion action scenes... 2nd viewing not nearly as good as 1st.

What's underneath is more interesting than what's on the surface, the problem I have with the film is that it regurgitates many of the themes Nolan did and for me at least doesn't do it nearly as well, even though I was never bored I found some of it rather tedious and the characters themselves are far from memorable, although I didn't mind Patterson as Batman and I did like the noirish look of the film at times, I think if this would have come out before Nolan's films I would have liked it much more.

Director: John Rawlins | Stars: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Evelyn Ankers, Reginald Denny

There were a few Sherlock Holmes films during the war that are basically propaganda pieces to bolster moral not just in America but among their allies and it does it well enough to make this entry mildly entertaining.

Director: Lloyd Corrigan | Stars: Anna May Wong, Warner Oland, Sessue Hayakawa, Bramwell Fletcher

This is basically a Fu Manchu film that's both silly and engaging at the same time but Anna May Wong fits the role well and made this mildly enjoyable.

When I first saw this film I thought it was a fun and entertaining romantic comedy , now I think it's hit and miss where the characters weren't as engaging as I once thought.

Kathy leaves the newspaper business to marry homicide detective Bill but is frustrated by his lack of ambition and the banality of life in the suburbs. Her drive to advance Bill's career soon takes her down a dangerous path.

Director: Gerd Oswald | Stars: Barbara Stanwyck, Sterling Hayden, Raymond Burr, Fay Wray

Votes: 2,855

What's underneath this noir of sorts is more interesting than what's on the surface which is both progressive and dated in it's themes and Stanwyck seemed like a perfect choice for the material and when she's the strong independent woman I love she's quite good but when she's not I'm not a fan which made the ending not all that satisfying but there are those who think this film is way ahead of it's time and an underrated gem.

Director: Paul Verhoeven | Stars: Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, George Dzundza, Jeanne Tripplehorn

After seeing the film again after 30 years I'm somewhat surprised that the film was more coherent than I remembered but I still think this trashy bit of pulp isn't as trashy or fun as it thinks it is and I still think it works better at the beginning and falls apart at the end... this will be the role Stone will be remembered for and she's good but I wouldn't rank her as one of the great femme fatales and Douglas was tailor made for this...I never found the love scenes all that erotic and the infamous interrogation scene has lost some of it's punch but there's no denying it's very watchable.

An unofficial lawman and would-be senator is tasked by a railroad baron with hunting down a knife-wielding Mexican peasant accused of raping and killing a young girl.

Director: Sergio Sollima | Stars: Lee Van Cleef, Tomas Milian, Walter Barnes, Nieves Navarro

Votes: 7,087

Highly regarded by some but I found this Spaghetti Western only mildly entertaining and most of the credit goes to Lee Van Cleef who's presence adds a lot to the film... the film supposedly came out around the same time as "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" but the final showdown at the end seems like a poor man's version of Ugly's and came across as silly maybe because this Director doesn't have Leone's skill or the actors themselves other than Cleef couldn't sell it.

Director: Parker Finn | Stars: Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert

The film has a few creepy moments but it goes down familiar territory and because of that the films predictability works against it and makes the film not as effective as it should have been.

A woman returns home to her estranged family after a near-fatal accident, but begins to suspect something is not right.

Director: Adam Levins | Stars: Craig Conway, James Cosmo, Bob Duff, James Lance

The film for the most part is fairly effective but the depravity of some the characters will probably turn some people off and I found my sympathy for the main character came from what was being done to her more than she being a likable character.

Director: Colin Trevorrow | Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill

The film is dumb as hell and regurgitates so much from what came before and for a while I just hated it but somewhere along the way I was willing to embrace it's silliness and bringing back the original cast helped that I actually got some enjoyment out of it and in the end this turned out for me to be the best of the reboot series which is the best thing I can say about it.

Far from the best this genre has to offer but far from the worst either with some well choreographed fight scenes which helped make this beat"em"up mildly entertaining.

A visiting city reporter's assignment suddenly revolves around the murder trial of a local millionaire, whom he befriends.

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, Jack Thompson, Irma P. Hall

Votes: 41,460 | Gross: $25.08M

Spacey chews the scenery and does it well, Cusack seemed miscast especially at the beginning because he seemed uncomfortable in the role, I swear every time he laughed or smiled it seemed forced although by the time the film ended I found him acceptable and the story itself just never comes to life until a scene stealing Lady Chablis appears and brought much needed energy to the film and that for me at least made the film a better watch than I thought it was going to be.

6 It probably deserves a 5 but for Lady Chablis I'll give it an extra point.

Director: Paul Campion | Stars: Craig Hall, Matthew Sunderland, Gina Varela, Karlos Drinkwater

The films well enough made and acted to hold your attention despite it's low budget trappings but it's that detriment that will probably stop some people from getting much enjoyment out of it thinking a bigger budget would have helped give it more polish.

Directors: Riccardo Freda, Mario Bava | Stars: John Merivale, Didi Sullivan, Gérard Herter, Giacomo Rossi Stuart

Votes: 1,617

The film looks good and has some effective scenes probably due to Bava's uncredited direction but it'll remind you of other films like "The Blob" but the silliness of that film tended to work for it and make it campy fun at times, the silly parts of this film work against it because this film tries to take itself seriously and the dubbing didn't help maybe in it's original form it would have worked better.

Director: Jerry Lewis | Stars: Jerry Lewis, Ina Balin, Everett Sloane, Phil Harris

I actually think the film would make a good double bill with "The King of Comedy" sadly the premise is the only good thing about it and the last act isn't bad, other than that it's just not funny or even amusing mainly because Lewis goes to far over the top as usual.
