The world’s most famous fat cat is coming to theaters soon. “Garfield,” an animated film starring Chris Pratt as the famous Jim Davis comic strip character, will premiere in theaters Feb. 16, 2024.
In addition to Pratt, the film will also star Samuel L. Jackson as a brand-new character to the Garfield universe, Vic, who is the father of the orange feline. The plot that will bring Garfield’s father back into his life remains under wraps. Although no other cast members have been announced, the film will presumably feature classic characters from the franchise, including his owner Jon Arbuckle and dim-witted puppy Odie.
The animated movie represents the latest big screen outing for the iconic lasagna-loving misanthrope. Bill Murray famously voiced the character in two live-action and CGI-hybrid films, 2004’s “Garfield: The Movie” and its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.” The two films received largely negative reviews, but were both commercially successful.

Garfield is one of the biggest jokes on the internet. Not necessarily because he's funny, but sometimes actually because of his lack of funniness. There has been Garfield minus Garfield, along with plenty of other funny jokes. Well, Jim Davis, creator of Garfield, is getting his own chance to draw for Marvel Comics now.
In a special Squirrel Girl issue where the characters in the Marvel Universe will be writing their own comics telling stories. Ryan North, the writer of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl has contacted many different artists to add their own style and influence to the comic to give each character who writes in it a voice. One of those voices is Galactus.
Jim Davis will be drawing the panels for the Galactus segment of the comic, having Galactus basically be a cosmic Garfield and Norin Radd, aka Silver Surfer, will be Jon. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly,...

When it comes to innocent comics, I think we can all agree that Jim Davis’ Garfield ranks pretty high up there. Sure, both Jon Arbuckle and Garfield the Cat can be a little abusive towards each other, but I don’t… Continue Reading →

Some may consider Garfield, a staple of the funny pages since 1978, to be a relic from an earlier, much lamer era of comedy. To modern-day cynics weaned on Adult Swim and YouTube, the long-running comic strip is merely a tame, tired throwback to those pre-internet days when people were genuinely amused by a fat, orange cat making wisecracks about lasagna and hating Mondays. But Jim Davis’ cartoon creation has made an admirable effort to keep up with the times. There has been a pretty elaborate official Garfield website since the 1990s, for instance, and some say that Davis was offering something called “G-mail” long before even Google wanted that name.

Garfield: Comic strip cat Garfield will return to the big screen in an animated movie, with hopes to launch a franchise. Jim Davis created the lazy, lovable feline for a comic strip that began running in 1978 and has inspired numerous television versions, two movies featuring the voice of Bill Murray as Garfield (Garfield: The Movie, above), and three other direct to video films. [The Wrap]. Austin Powers: Mike Myers is still mulling the possibility of a fourth Austin Powers movie. Jay Roach, who directed the first three installments, says that he and Myers talk about it every time they get together, though he describes the project as being "in a latent phase right now." Roach says that many ideas have been discussed, but none have stuck yet. The latest...

Even though Bill Murray.s casting as Garfield should have been a match made in cinematic heaven, his two outings as the feline with a lasagna fetish didn.t produce the films that fans of the character and actor were hoping for. But they still made a combined total of $342.5 million at the box office, which means that news of a brand-new Garfield film shouldn.t shock anyone. Rather than being a sequel though, this is a fresh iteration of Garfield and it will be entirely animated. Variety were the first to report that Alcon Entertainment signed a deal for the rights to make animated films based on the world famous Garfield comic strip, created by Jim Davis - who was also named as an executive producer on this latest incarnation of his beloved character. Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-founders and co-chief executive officers of the studio, making...

Don't expect Bill Murray this time, but do expect a brand new series of Garfield movies...
The best thing about the two Garfield movies that we’ve seen to date? That’d arguably be Bill Murray’s anecdotes about how he got involved in voicing cartoonist Jim Davis’ most famous creation. Murray, goes the story, agreed to voice the cat in the CG/live action hybrid movies when he confused screenwriter Joel Cohen (Cheaper By The Dozen, Daddy Day Camp) with Oscar-winning writer/director Joel Coen (No Country For Old Men, Fargo).Whether you fully believe Murray’s anecdote or not, it was arguably more memorable than anything that happened in the two Garfield films.
Now there’s a new Garfield movie that’s gone into the works, and it’s probably fair to say that Murray won’t be involved this time. The rights have been...

Keep an eye on your lasagna, because that Italian food-loving fat cat Garfield is getting a brand new series of movies. Alcon Entertainment (the same production company behind the upcoming Blade Runner 2) has acquired exclusive rights to produce animated movies based on the iconic comic strip. For those who care enough about this to hope that the movies stay true to the character, you'll be pleased to know that Garfield creator Jim Davis is on board as an executive producer.
The company's goal is "to build a franchise of fully CG-animated Garfield feature films," so prepare yourselves for seeing Garfield TV spots sporadically every few years for the next decade. This new rash of movies will be different than the Bill Murray-voiced live-action/animation hybrids, and I assume they're going to start from scratch with the story and not try to continue it in CG form.

Crack out the lasagna; The Hollywood Reporter brings words that a Garfield animated movie has found a home at Alcon Entertainment, the studio currently presiding over Denis Villeneuve’s long-gestating sequel, Blade Runner 2.
Circling back to the strip-based comic that first made its bow back in 1978, before shooting to success throughout the ’80s, THR notes that Alcon has struck a deal with Jim Davis – creative mind behind the rotund feline – who will serve as executive producer on the finished movie. It’s understood Alcon is eyeing a bona fide series of CG films based around the endearing and indeed conniving cat, along with his adventures with Jon Arbuckle and Odie, the clueless dog that fast become an easy form of entertainment for the mischievous Garfield.
Of course, Garfield has made a pass at the big screen before, most notably with Peter Hewitt’s live-action movie that had The Jungle Book...

A business magazine recently featured a story about the astoundingly short average life span of today’s companies, brands and product leaders. They noted that the average life expectancy of a modern company is something like 15 years. I think about a brand like PalmPilot, where one of my college buddies made a fortune, and how that name is practically a trivia question for this year’s Mba graduates. (“Is it a helicopter operator in Palm Beach?”) Likewise, cool companies they want to work for include Google and Lululemon – brands that didn’t exist 15 years ago.
So with all that in mind, let’s explore the opposite: the challenges of working with an 80-year-old brand in such a fickle climate.
Created in 1936, Lee Falk’s The Phantom was the first costumed comic hero. Bridging the gap of the masked vigilantes of the pulps (The Shadow, The Spider, etc.) and comic book superheroes,...

I was a huge fan of Peanuts when I was a kid. I can vividly remember staying up late in bed reading collections of the comic strip until I could barely keep my eyes open. This should make me the ideal audience for The Peanuts Movie, but instead it just serves as a reminder of how far this franchise has fallen. I have this hipster-esque longing for a time before Peanuts became so damn commercial (a time that never existed in my lifetime, mind you) and back before the Schulz estate seemed locked in a nefarious race with Jim Davis of Garfield to see who can make the most money with the least amount of artistic effort. The Peanuts Movie is a soulless movie stitched together from the corpse of a very soulful comic strip.
The script for The Peanuts Movie feels like it was stitched together from three episodes of an abandoned TV show.

Garfield creator Jim Davis is well aware of the internet's cat obsession. In fact, he's got an upcoming strip about it. "But if I told you the joke, I'd have to kill you," he deadpans, before cracking his paternal composure with a chuckle. (He did tell me, and I've chosen life.)
"Cats are absolutely perfect for the internet," insists Davis. Davis himself spends hours watching cat videos on YouTube at his home in East Central Indiana, the birthplace of Garfield and James Dean. ("They do have one thing in common, and that's the cool factor," he says mock-seriously.) He's a sucker for a good pratfall -- his favorite TV show is still America's Funniest Home Videos. Jim Davis, the creator of "Garfield," recently gave an interview to the Huffington Post in tandem with the release of the new "Garfield" holiday DVD collection. This got me thinking: Are we forgetting to appreciate some of Garfield's strange past? Though Garfield hit newspapers in 1978, he's taken something of a flogging on social media in recent years. He's not terribly cool to like, though I don't know a single person who didn't grow up on "Garfield" or at least own a Fat Cat 3-Pack. In fact, most millennials were probably introduced to the concept of sarcasm through Garfield. He's basically the Jay Leno of comic strips: a surefire comfort source that people remember and discard for its simplistic gimmicks. Mondays. Lasagna. Nermal. Repeat. "Garfield Without Garfield," an eerie deconstructed comic that revisited real "Garfield" comics, removed Garfield from every panel, and revealed the strip to be a sad tale...

There are a few things even casual fans know about Garfield. He.s a cat. He adores lasagna. He.s frequently perturbed by his dog colleague, Odie. And he Despises Monday. These are absolute truths that we.ve come to accept about the cartoon feline. But has anyone bothered to ask why? Huffington Post film critic Nell Minow actually did during an interview with Garfield.s creator, Jim Davis, in honor of the DVD release of Garfield.s Holiday Collection, which will include a Thanksgiving special featuring the colorful cat and his cast of supporting characters. When approached about the cat.s feelings about Monday (a sentiment most of us share, after all), Davis told the site: Garfield does not have a job, Garfield does not go to school, and every day is the same. Nevertheless, every Monday is just a reminder that his life is the same old, same...

Cats have invaded every corner of modern pop culture, from Internet memes to Taylor Swift's life—but there's one quintessential feline who's been a mainstay for generations. Above you'll find the first comic that artist Bill Watterson has created since he retired Calvin & Hobbes in 1995. It is actually a poster that he created for a documentary film called Stripped. The doc explores the creation of these comic strips and their transition from newspapers to digital. It features interviews with the creators of Garfield, Cathy, For Better or For Worse, The Oatmeal, Penny Arcade, and even Watterson himself, who rarely gives interviews.
Watterson spoke to The Washington Post and explained the poster he did for the movie:
“Given the movie’s title and the fact that there are few things funnier than human nudity, the idea popped into my head largely intact. The film is a big valentine to comics, so I tried to do something really cartoon-y. I had thought of having it colored with off-registered printing dots like newspaper comics, but Dave asked if I’d paint it instead,...

I had thought of having it colored with off-registered printing dots like newspaper comics, but Dave asked if I’d paint it instead,...

Last year, Calvin & Hobbes and the comic strip's creator Bill Watterson got their own documentary called Dear Mr. Watterson. Now a new documentary called Stripped goes a little more broad by focusing on Jim Davis, Cathy Guisewite, Mort Walker, Mike & Jerry, Matt Inman and Jeff Keane, the names behind comic strips like Garfield, Cathy, Beetle Bailey, Penny Arcade, The Oatmeal and Family Circus respectively. And there's plenty more cartoonists interviewed in this documentary looking into the art of comic strips. We love how it spans from the oldest newspaper strips to today's online comics. In addition, the poster below is the first comic strip illustration Watterson has made in 18 years. Check it out! Here's the first trailer for Dave Kellett and Frederick Schroeder's Stripped via The Film Stage: And here's the poster for the documentary, created and illustrated by Bill Watterson: Stripped is written and directed by Dave Kellett and Frederick Schroeder.

Calvin And Hobbes is one of the most beloved comic strips since Peanuts but its creator, 55 year-old Bill Watterson, hasn’t put comic pen to paper since retiring the characters 1995, instead passing the time painting and largely keeping out of the public eye. This poster is the first public Watterson cartoon for nearly two decades and if it isn’t a boy and his tiger tearing about on a toboggan, it’s the next best thing. The film it's advertising, Stripped, is a documentary that’s just debuted on the iTunes store. Launched in 1985, Calvin And Hobbes followed the amazing, mum-baiting antics of six year-old Calvin and the smartypants stuffed tiger he brings to life with the power of his imagination. With its energy and advanced sense of the surreal, it read like Bagpuss by way of Charlie Kaufman. As the title hints, Stripped takes a nostalgic look at some...

Which American actress is richer than Oprah? According to a new list, "Seinfeld" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is worth a whopping $3 billion, beating Oprah by $300 million and becoming the fourth richest celebrity (singers, rappers, actors, models). Louis-Dreyfus didn't earn all that money from her work on "Seinfeld." In fact, most of it comes from her family. But that's not to say that "Seinfeld" didn't make her richer. Both Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David made the list, each being worth $800 million. What's interesting is that Keanu Reeves is worth $350 million, which is more than Will Smith ($200 million) and Bruce Springsteen ($200 million). But that's nothing comparing to the person who took first place, George Lucas, who's worth $7.3 billion, mostly thanks to the sale of "Star Wars" to Disney. Check out the top 50 list below: 1. George Lucas: $7.3 Billion 2. Dina Merrill: $5 Billion 3. Steven Spielberg: $3 Billion 4. Julia Louis-Dreyfus: $3 Billion 5. Oprah Winfrey:...

Back in 1981, Jim Davis received a posthumous Emmy nod as the Ewing family patriarch on the CBS blockbuster soap opera "Dallas." Now his TV son Larry Hagman may repeat the same feat when nominations are announced this July. -Insertgroups:12- Hagman played the conniving oilman J.R. Ewing on the original series as well as the new TNT reboot, now in its second season. He died on November 23 at age 81 but had already filmed seven new episodes. His final segment aired on March 4, followed a week later by a star-studded funeral and wake. If Hagman receives an Emmy bid as Best Drama Supporting Actor, it would be only his third in a long TV career. In 1980, he was defeated for Best Drama Actor by Edward Asner ("Lou Grant"). The following year, both he and Davis were beaten by Daniel J. Travanti ("Hill Street Blues"). The only major Emmy victory by...

It’s an ingeniously simple concept – take Garfield out of the Garfield strips. What’ve you got left? His mad owner, Jon Arbuckle wandering about his house making bizarre statements and doing nutty things. And it’s both utterly hilarious and startlingly sad.
I was never the biggest fan of Garfield, or any newspaper strip really, so I never really noticed just how strange Jon is, mostly because the paradigm of Jon and Garfield works so well. The setup is always Jon lamenting his rather lonely existence or doing something desperate for some excitement in his life and then Garfield showing up and “saying” something sarcastic.
Because Garfield never really says anything – all of his “dialogue” is in thought bubbles, so despite Dan Walsh’s brilliant idea of removing Garfield from the strips to show how lonely Jon Arbuckle is by talking to himself, he’s actually always been talking...

Whether you’re a fan of Dallas past or present, tonight is the episode you won’t want to miss, as one of TV's greatest icons, Jr Ewing, is laid to rest.
However, in true soap fashion, the demise of the character is shrouded in mystery, propelling numerous stories forward in between mourning periods.
I was on the legendary Southfork Ranch set recently to chat with the cast about their memories of Larry Hagman and how their characters will deal with the passing of Jr. (And be sure to check back here tomorrow morning when you can find out how Executive Producers Cynthia Cidre and Michael Robin crafted tonight’s episode, along with what we can expect moving forward).

As the offspring of J.R. and Sue Ellen, John Ross can be as diabolical and conniving as his dad, so how does Jr’s death affect John Ross?...

Remember back in the day when Garfield and his friends went on zany and fun-filled adventures? It was a simpler time when cartoons offered something back then few cartoons today provide, entertainment. Jim Davis’ quirky orange lasagna-loving feline was the star of a celebrated comic strip and a cool animated series. Unfortunately, Garfield’s awesomeness ended in the early 2000s when a CG/live-action film ruined the famous cat’s name and even further damage to the character was done by a computer-animated series called The Garfield Show. A special holiday-themed DVD is now out of this disaster of a show and aren’t we lucky.

Kathryn Joosten won two Emmys for guesting on "Desperate Housewives." Less than seven weeks after her death on June 2, TV academy members paid tribute to her with a nomination as Best Comedy Supporting Actress for her role as the busybody neighbor Karen McCluskey. While four of our Experts, two Editors and many Users are predicting her to win, Emmy history says otherwise. Voters just aren't sentimental when it comes to giving out their trophies. Since 1980, 13 performers were nominated after they died but only one -- Raul Julia for his lead performance in the 1995 telefilm "The Burning Season" -- prevailed. View Gallery In the dramatic categories, the posthumous nominees were Michael Conrad ("Hill Street Blues"), Jim Davis ("Dallas"), Ossie Davis ("The L Word") and Nancy Marchand ("The Sopranos"). Remember Def Comedy Jam? Remember Garfield? Obviously, it was only a matter of time before these two worlds collided.
In this new video from comedy group Scraps (under the Ucb Comedy umbrella), made-up Def Jam comics like Dogg Washington, Tweet-Tweet and Shon-d go off on Jim Davis' most famous creation. And don't even think that Odie, Nermal and lasagna get off scot-free. That stupid cat just can't get enough lasagna.

You can’t keep a good thing down. 14 years after their last public debacle, the Ewing family is returning to the primetime limelight in the resurrected “Dallas.” The show officially went off the air in 1991 after 13 seasons, a miniseries, and a TV-movie. TV-movies reunited the Ewings in 1996 and 1998, proving that fans couldn’t get enough drama from Texas’ first family of oil. Now they’re back again and they’ve dragged the kids into it.
The new series premieres Wednesday, June 13 on TNT. It revolves around the continuing family infighting of the Ewings. However this time around, J.R. (Larry Hagman), Bobby (Patrick Duffy), and Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) are the referees to the scheming battles between their sons John Ross (Josh Henderson) and Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe). Their significant others are caught in the crossfire and no doubt add to the trouble the dysfunctional family makes for themselves.

As this summer’s blockbuster season reminds us comic book adaptations are big business with the latest incarnations of heroes old and new filling the local picturehouse and running merry riot over box office records.
Given the twin benefits of a wealth of material on which to draw and a ready audience primed to see their favourites fleshed out and thrown onto a movie screen it seems that we’ll be seeing many more familiar, and some less familiar, cartoon characters in movies of their own.
Jean Dujardin turned the world into a swooning mess when he led Michel Hazanavicius’ award magnet The Artist last year and in this article Anwar Brett takes a look at another of the actor’s roles, that of Lucky Luke in James Huth’s adaptation of the comic book by Morris, which is out now on DVD, as well as nine other cartoon heroes...

Bosses of TV hit Dallas have lined up a series of tributes to the show's late stars Barbara Bel Geddes and Jim Davis for its relaunch this year.
Bel Geddes, who played Ewing family matriarch Miss Ellie, died in 2005, and in the first Dallas broadcast since her passing, her screen son Bobby will be seen visiting the character's grave.
Viewers will be told Miss Ellie died in 2001.
Patrick Duffy, who steps back into his role as Bobby when the show relaunches in the U.S. in June, tells TVGuide.com, "Barbara is a big piece of our history, and it's important to me to honour her. To come back with Linda (Gray) as Sue Ellen and Larry (Hagman) in his J.R. hat, and then see the words Ellie Southworth Ewing Farlow on the gravestone made me think, 'Oh, that's right - she's gone.' It was hard to get through the dialogue."
Duffy reveals producers have also factored in a nod to Jim Davis, who played Miss Ellie's husband Jock Ewing until his death in 1981, by asking designer Richard Berg to paint a portrait of Jock and Miss Ellie which hangs in the family home at Southfork Ranch in the new series.
Duffy adds, "He captured Jim and Barbara in a look to each other that is unbelievable. That painting is actually alive and gives me a nice feeling that they're always there. Through the whole first season, I don't think an episode goes by that Mama is not mentioned in reference to Southfork and the land."...

The erstwhile “Berke” Breathed, who at some point in the last two decades learned what a “berk” was in British slang and decided to extend his professional name, presents one of the most interesting and stark success stories in the history of modern American strip comics: he lept to fame with Bloom County, almost from the moment it launched in 1980. [1] And then he ended that strip in mid-1989 (cementing its role as the quintessentially ’80s strip, for anyone with an axe to grind about that decade), partly for creative reasons and partly for overwork issues, to work on a spin-off, Outland, that never had the wide appeal or impact of its parent, even as it got more Bloom County-ish as it went along.
Every other major strip cartoonist before Breathed had a different reaction to success, creative unrest, and pressures of work: they all corporatized, bringing on gagmen and inkers...

An auction of Dallas star Larry Hagman's personal items netted more than $$500,000 (£304,971) over the weekend. The actor made a personal appearance to entice potential buyers to "bid high and bid often" on Saturday at La auction house Julien's, Dallas TV station Wfaa-tv reports. Hagman, who played unscrupulous oil baron J.R. Ewing for 13 seasons of Dallas, explained that he agreed to undertake the auction in an attempt to be frugal during these tough economic times. Dallas legend Larry Hagman raised more than $500,000 (£313,000) after auctioning off a portion of his memorabilia collection on Saturday.
The TV villain, famed for his portrayal of sleazy oil tycoon J.R. Ewing, sold off a number of personal valuables collected over the years at Julien's Auctions in California.
Hagman, who opened the sale in style by riding through the streets of Beverly Hills on horseback, was on hand to describe the items going under the hammer for bidders, according to the Associated Press.
The best-selling lot was a silver saddle, which fetched a staggering $80,000 (£50,000), while a portrait of his late Dallas co-star Jim Davis went for more than $38,000 (£24,000).
A replica bottle from I Dream of Jeannie, the show that gave Hagman his big break, sold for more than $10,000 (£6,250) and a pair of pistols brought in more than $4,000 (£2,500).

Growing up, I looked forward to the Garfield comic strip featured in the Sunday paper funnies each weekend. Garfield, a large orange tabby cat with an attitude problem and a massive appetite, bore a striking resemblance to my own beloved pet at the time, and the interactions between him, his hapless owner Jon, and the adorably stupid dog Odie were greatly entertaining. They lived relatively mundane lives, but creator Jim Davis inserted a healthy dose of absurdity and humor into even those everyday situations. However, I have had very little interest in the live-action adaptations of the cartoon, with Garfield voiced by Bill Murray; as much as I love both Murray and Garfield, something about those movies just seems indefinably wrong. However, I was eager to give the animated versions of these characters a shot in a nostalgic attempt to relive that part of my childhood.

There has been no shortage of cartoon cats in the last 100 years. Whether in comic strips or animated form, cartoon cats have been a traditional part of our culture for decades. It started with Felix the Cat in 1919. Felix became the first cartoon character to cross over into the mainstream and grew to be a pop culture phenomenon. Many cats have made their mark in cartoons since Felix. Sylvester, Tom, Mr. Jinx, Top Cat, Heathcliff and a host of other cartoon felines have made us laugh over the years. In 1978, we were introduced to another cat who would go on to become one of the most popular ever; created by Jim Davis, Garfield appeared in his first comic strip in June of that year and he's been going strong ever since.

Garfield cartoonist Jim Davis has apologized for the "regrettable" timing of a comic strip which joked about "National Stupid Day" on Veterans Day.
"Please accept my apologies for any offense today's Garfield may have created. It was unintentional and regrettable," a statement from Davis said, according to Reuters.
Thursday's strip featured an exchange between the famous pudgy cat and a spider in which the spider says that if he's squished, there will be an annual day of remembrance in his honor.
The final frame of the strip featured a classroom of spiders asking why they celebrate "National Stupid Day."
Davis, who has a son who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the cartoon was written almost a year before it actually ran.

This little kitty is in big big trouble. Jim Davis, the creator of the inexplicably ubiquitous Garfield, issued an apology today to members of the armed forces and others who were offended by a cartoon that ran on Veterans Day that implied the the holiday was "National Stupid Day." Talk about bad timing. In the strip, the spider-averse fat cat confronts an eight-legged critter who warns, "If you squish me, I shall become famous...they will hold an annual day of remembrance in my honor, you fat slob!" Garfield stares at him, nonplussed, but it's clear the arachnid's remarks have no effect. The final panel shows a classroom of spiders being asked, "Does anyone here know...
